    Abstract: The present invention is directed toward the use of the drug Troglitazone and related thiazolidinedione compounds in the treatment of the climacteric and cancer. This use is based on the novel discovery that Troglitazone inhibits steroidogenesis in granulosa cell cultures. This activity is believed to result from the ability of thiazolidinedione derivatives to act as a ligand for the orphan steroid receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR&ggr;). Troglitazone and related compounds can therefore be used to prevent excessive uterine bleeding during. Further enhanced translocation of this orphan nuclear receptor into the nucleus of cells will block transcription in rapidly proliferating cancer cells that express PPAR&ggr; resulting in loss of cell viability.

Surprisingly, in potatoes transformed to express these genes in tubers, reduced bruise discoloration susceptibility and increased uniformity of starch deposition throughout the tuber are achieved.

A television receiver for use with such composite GCR signals includes circuitry for separating the chirp and PN sequence portions of the GCR signals from the remainder of the composite video signal, a ghost cancellation filter and an equalization filter connected in cascade to respond to the composite video signal and provided each with adjustable filtering weights, and a computer. Random-access memory addressed during writing snatches the vertical-blanking-interval scan lines selected to include GCR signals. Sets of four successive ones of the selected scan lines are then additively and subtractively combined to separate the chirp portions of the GCR signals from a remainder of the composite video signal.

The existence of distal and proximal elements located 5′ from the transcription initiation site of the hK14 gene is demonstrated, which when combined with a TATA box element, appear to act in concert to drive keratinocyte-specific expression. The proximal element was also examined.

Bubbles of gas flow upward through the bed of solid catalyst particles and substantially inert liquid medium at sufficient velocity to expand the bed to a volume greater than its static volume. This velocity creates a turbulent reaction zone wherein liquid, gas, and solid catalyst are present and are in a state of motion.
