Abstract: The resistance of structural elastomer products, such as bearing blocks, to compressive forces is reduced by incorporating therein a plurality of small, separate, reinforcing elements of relatively hard material. Such materials include crushed rock, concrete, glass or certain slags and small metal pieces. The reinforcing elements are congregated in an interior section or core which is covered by a marginal section substantially free from reinforcing elements.

Abstract: Apparatus for duplicating on the end of a piece of molding, the surface contour of said molding, comprising adjustable holding means for a piece of molding, a band saw for cutting said molding piece transversely, means for holding a sample of said molding oriented substantially 90.degree. from said piece, tracing means operatively connected to said saw for tracing the surface contour of said sample, and means for moving said tracing means and said saw together in sawing through said piece of molding.

Abstract: A protector to prevent or minimize the contact of hair spray or the like on the face of a user which consists of a symmetrical strip of relatively thin, flexible material such as cardboard that has one straight longitudinal edge and another, irregular, longitudinal edge, the end portions of said irregular edge being straight and parallel with said straight longitudinal edge, the medial portion of said irregular edge being straight and parallel with said straight longitudinal edge, and said end portions and medial portion being connected by outwardly converging, sloping portions.

Abstract: A process applicable to metal and metalloid surfaces for detecting and determining the boundaries of stressed areas and areas exhibiting chemical variations involves ascertaining at a number of points on a surface the electrical potential generated between the surface and an electrode when both are in contact with a solution of an electrolyte. The surface and electrode may be of the same material or different and the electrolyte may be a soluble salt of the same metal as either the surface or the electrode or of another metal. The testing can be carried out by hand or automatically. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the tests is disclosed, such apparatus including means for testing individual points or for obtaining one or more continuous readings of the generated potential across the surface.

Abstract: A folding boat comprising two sections, one of which may be folded back on the other for transportation, said boat being preferably formed by molding resin-impregnated fiberglass and including a frame embedded in the lower of the two folded sections and being provided with suspension means that comprises wheels mounted on leaf-springs and removably secured on opposite sides of the lower section of said boat whereby the folded boat may be towed by an automobile or other vehicle by a tow bar removably attached to the lower boat section.

Abstract: Sulfur dioxide in the combustion gases from steam-generating systems is removed therefrom by mixing the gases in a reaction chamber, for a period of from 2 seconds to about 15 seconds with dry, finely divided, reactive, lime-bearing material, and then separating most of the reacted particles in a settling chamber. The reaction and settling chambers are located between the boiler and the economizer, between the economizer and the air preheater, or between the air preheater and the precipitator, with the gases being diverted through the chambers and then returned to their normal flow path. A portion of the reacted particles from the settling chamber are mixed and ground with fresh particles of lime-bearing material and recycled back through the reaction chamber, the mixture being heated, if desired, before being introduced into the latter.

Abstract: An opener for bivalves, such as clams and oysters, which comprises a holder for a bivalve, an opening blade, having a handle, for insertion between the bivalve shells, said blade being pivotally mounted by a ball joint to allow motion in a vertical plane and rotation about its longitudinal axis, and a spatula-like, flattened spoon for detaching the bivalve from its shells.

Abstract: A device for holding a sandwich during cutting thereof and/or during insertion thereof in a container which device comprises a tray having opposed, spaced, side walls, each provided with a vertical slot extending from its top edge substantially to its bottom. Said slots are adapted to receive a knife blade for cutting a sandwich reposing in said tray. The side walls, adjacent one end of the tray, are provided with inturned extensions that partially close said end. At the same end, the bottom of the tray extends outwardly, parallel to said side walls, and is preferably provided with an upwardly projecting end. The device also includes a separable end plate, generally rectangular in shape that is of slightly less length than the distance between said side walls and which is provided with longitudinally projecting hooks at its ends adapted to loosely engage said side walls.

Abstract: A process and apparatus applicable to products which are or can be made electrically conductive for the purpose of measuring information encoded in them as a result of the manufacturing steps employed. Elemental mechanogalvanic potentials reflect a measure of the total information content of a product and are generated when the product serves as an electrode and where a second electrode with a rollable solid electrolyte in contact with the product rolls over it generating data related to the elemental constituents of the product. Mappings or numerical matrices whose elements are the mechanogalvanic potentials can be the basis of extensive important analysis by conventional mathematical procedures.

Abstract: A retractable snowplow wing and mounting therefor which can be installed on substantially any truck with a longitudinal frame. The wing which may basically be of any desired construction is supported at both its inboard and outboard ends to permit raising it and swinging it horizontally from plowing position to a position substantially parallel to the truck body. The mechanism comprises first means attached to the inboard end of the wing and slidably mounted for vertical movement on support means carried by the truck frame and second means attached to the outboard end of the wing and comprising an extensible strut and motor means both of which are pivotally mounted on a bracket secured to the truck frame and extending laterally therefrom.

Abstract: A rural type mailbox having a pivoted platform therein. The platform is tilted from a manually set, metastable position to a stable position by shiftable weights when an article of mail, such as a letter is placed thereon. Such tilting, through a magnetic coupling and levers causes a signal target to be raised into view whereby the owner of the box is informed that mail has been deposited therein.

Abstract: Sealing apparatus for joints in roadways which comprises elongated anchor pads secured by studs and nuts to the surfaces of concrete slabs on opposite sides of a gap therebetween and a flexible, resilient, elongated, sealing member extending between and integral with said pads, said pads preferably being formed of a relatively hard elastomeric material having rock fragments embedded therein and reinforced by longitudinally extending metal plates therein. Means is provided for connecting sections of said sealing apparatus end-to-end and preventing leakage at their contacting ends.

Abstract: A liquid dispensing pump particularly designed for dispensing measured amounts of edible liquids such as molten chocolate into molds, that may be of varying capacities. The pump dispenses, from a filled pump barrel, on outward movement of a valved piston and the quantity dispensed is determined by the position of a stop pin in a notched tube that is moved in unison with the piston rod and pivoted stop plates that limit movement of the stop pin. The pump is readily disassembled for cleaning and is adapted for easy mounting on a tank.

Abstract: A sintered ceramic article which comprises internal electrodes and/or conductors is formed by producing a sintered ceramic body that has areas of ceramic material extending to an outer face thereof, said areas having an open structure characterized by interconnected voids, and thereafter providing a conductor in said porous areas. The ceramic body may be formed by depositing, for example by screen printing, on sheets of a powdered dielectric or insulating ceramic material bonded with a temporary bond, an area of a temporarily bonded powdered ceramic material which on firing becomes porous, i.e. open-structured, consolidating a plurality of such sheets, and sintering them. Subsequently, electrodes or conductors may be provided in the open-structured areas by impregnating said areas with a metal or alloy and providing a termination electrode on the said outer face. If desired, an open-structured permeable barrier can be provided on said outer face before such impregnation.

Abstract: A monolithic, multilayer, ceramic capacitor is formed by introducing molten metal into a matrix having thin electrode regions between dielectric strata, through holes, each of which extends through a face of said matrix and provides communication between the outside of said matrix and at least one of said regions, around wires or rods inserted in said holes, thereby providing external leads for said capacitor. A similar process is used to provide internal and external connectors for multilayer, ceramic, circuit boards.

Abstract: A drum beater, operated by a foot pedal which is easily and conveniently attached to a drum, provides adjustments for the length of the beater stem and for the length of the beater ball stroke. Means, comprising a pair of opposed, adjustable, tension springs for resisting movement of the beater ball toward the drum head and for controlling the rebound of the beater ball after it has struck the drum head.

Abstract: A pistol of the revolver type having two vertically spaced barrels having bores of different diameters, a cylinder having chambers for two different sized cartridges, the bullets therein being adapted to fit, respectively, the barrels of different diameter, and means for selectively firing cartridges in said cylinder chambers.
