Abstract: Aircraft roll command signals are generated as a function of the Microwave Landing System based azimuth, groundtrack, groundspeed and azimuth rate or range distance input parameters. On initial approach, roll command signals are inhibited until a minimum roll command requirement is met. As the aircraft approaches the centerline of the runway, the system reverts to a linear track control.
Abstract: A method for determining proper operation of a multi-section photo-sensitive detector (10) includes measuring (102) the cathode-anode dark resistance of each section and rejecting the detector (104, 108) if any section measures less than a predetermined value or if the ratio of the dark resistance of any section to the section having the highest dark resistance (106) exceeds a specified level. Each detector is also subjected to anode-to-anode or cathode-to-cathode dark resistance testing for both adjacent (110) and non-adjacent (124) sections, with testing based on comparisons between section pair readings and the sum of the cathode-anode dark resistances of each section in the tested pair (114, 128).

Abstract: An aircraft door having an electrically operated latching device (601) engaged only when electrical power is applied. Latch logic permits release by actuation of a switch (603) on the pilot's panel, by loss of electrical power (602), by a knob on the control cabin side (605) or by a key from outside the control cabin (604). The aircraft door controlled by the electrically operated latching device (601) further includes a decompression override mechanism (606).

Abstract: A support rail structure which provides cooling air for removing heat from instruments. The support rail structures provide uniform cooling along each support rail regardless of instrument orientation within the instrument panel assembly. A system which includes the combination of instrument panel support rail and cooling manifold discharges a continuous flow of forced convection air along the base of the support rail. Valves are shown which provide flow-through cooling for cathode ray tube instruments. The instrument panel support rail structures enable a method of supplying conditioned air when concentration of instrument panels dictate that the air conditioning system be integrated within the panels.

Abstract: A reinforced elastomer attachment joint includes an elastomer section (304) butt bonded to a FIBERGLAS section (332), a boundary line (340) being defined therebetween. One or more fabric plies (338) are embedded within the elastomer (304) and FIBERGLAS (332) sections so as to be capable of transmitting loads from the elastomer section (304) to the FIBERGLAS section (332). The rigid FIBERGLAS section (332) is capable of being drilled and countersunk so as to accomodate fastening means (306) whereby the attachment joint can be secured to basic support structure (302).
Abstract: A drain structure for facilitating the draining of liquid condensate from inside an aircraft whenever air pressures inside and outside the aircraft are substantially equal. A pressure-sensitive apparatus is provided in conjunction with a drain opening through the aircraft's outer skin so that liquid can pass through the drain opening only while the apparatus is open. The apparatus includes a housing and a valve in the form of a slider movable within the housing to open and close the apparatus in response to the pressure differential between the inside and the outside of the aircraft. The housing defines a liquid passageway between the inside of the aircraft and the drain opening, and the slider closes the apparatus by blocking this liquid passageway whenever there is a substantial pressure differential between the inside and the outside of the aircraft.

Abstract: A remotely controlled system for mechanically positioning an aircraft airflow vane for the purpose of calibration wherein a stepper motor drives the vane to a predetermined position in response to electronic system control disposed at a point remotely located with respect to the aircraft airflow vane.
Abstract: A drill bit pointer machine includes a laser micrometer for measuring the pilot diameter and transmitting the data to a microprocessor through a digital readout. The microprocessor is programmed to manipulate the data and define the operation of a stepper motor which produces the required motion necessary for adjusting the machine workhead stop for utilization in the subsequently performed semi-automatic grinding cycle.
Abstract: A sliding block with a female die acts in conjunction with a four bar linkage mounted block with a male die to punch indexing holes in a moving metal strip. The block with male die continually seeks to rotate, but is held in position by the sliding block. The sliding block is programmed to periodically move forward at the speed of the moving metal strip and to return to starting position. This frees the male die to rotate to punch out the hole, and to continue to rotate back into the starting position to be held by the returned sliding block.

Abstract: An insert assembly includes a frustoconically shape cone nut (10), a cylindrical shell (20) and a bolt (36). The cone nut (10) has a longitudinal bore (12) which is tapped to accept the threads on the bolt. The shell (20) has projecting barbs (28) arranged in a helical pattern on the shell's outer surface. The assembly, comprising the bolt through the shell and threaded into the smaller diameter end of the nut cone, is driven into a bore in the work piece. The bolt is then rotated causing the cone nut to penetrate the shell resulting in radial expansion of the shell whereby the barbs become embedded in the work piece. A keying feature between the nut and the shell prevents nut rotation with the bolt.
Abstract: An induction heating coil having fluoroplastic coated polyimide tape wrapped windings for providing a bonded, solid monolithic structure. The induction heating coil includes a cooling heatsink of predetermined size and shape fused in relationship to a plurality of consecutive turns of current-carrying coil windings. A plurality of fluoroplastic coated polyimide sheets are fused to the coil body between the coil body and a fluoroplastic face sheet forming the outer wear surface of the induction heater coil, thereby providing a non-stick surface for release of hot melt adhesives.
Abstract: The combination opposed helix router having an opposed helix 70 degree left-hand upper portion and a lower portion consisting of a 45 degree helix. The combination opposed helix router is utilized for edge trimming and preparing holes in composite material face sheets with honeycomb core wherein the left-hand helix forces the face sheet fibers downward, thereby shearing them off, while the right-hand, or lower portion, forces the fibers on the lower surface upward, thereby shearing them off which operation eliminates the heavy burr normally present on the outer surface of the honeycomb sandwich during conventional routing.

The integral lightning protection system for composite aircraft skins, including skins with fasteners penetrating into fuel tanks, utilizes nickel-plated graphite fibers (24) which are woven into the outer layer of fabric of the structural component (10) requiring protection.

Abstract: A latch for securing a panel within an overhead opening includes a base portion which is secured to the panel. A cam is pivotally mounted to the base and is biased such that upon insertion of the panel into the opening a foot on the cam snaps over adjoining structure, pinching the structure against the base and thereby securing the panel. A trigger mechanism pivotally mounts to the cam and is configured to lock the cam in an unlatched position upon desired removal of the panel.
Abstract: A flexible lightweight short pulse power cable assembly for electrical power transmission, e.g., for transmission of electrical power at 20,000 volts at short pulse D.C. halfwave currents of 30,000 amperes. The cable for electrical transmission utilizes an inner conductor and an outer concentrically disposed conductor, the inner and outer conductors having substantially equal cross-sectional areas and consequent resistances to equal and opposite current flows in the respective conductors thereby placing the cable current forces in compressive balance and further reducing electro-magnetic interference from transmission of power through the cable.
