  • Patent number: 5251655
Abstract: Adjustable flow control valves are disclosed for controlling the flow of syrups and diluents at a corresponding predetermined constant flow rate regardless of the pressure of the fluid being controlled. The valves include a cylinder and piston assembly in which the piston has an inlet orifice and controls outlet ports from the cylinder to maintain a constant flow rate. Dual spring arrangements provide for adjusting the range of flow rates which the valve can accommodate in connection with varying pressure and varying viscosity of the liquid being controlled, and variable piston orifice arrangements are disclosed for the same purpose. An improved cylinder construction comprising sleeve and bonnet components is disclosed and provides for the outlet ports from the cylinder to be provided in the bonnet component.

  • Patent number: 5249436
Abstract: A simplified, low cost absorption heat pump includes a single pressure vessel having first and second insulated compartments in unrestricted fluid communication with one another and containing, hermetically sealed, a working medium. A heat transfer ar is used to maintain the compartments at differential temperatures, but equal pressures so that the absorption cycle proceeds in a two-stage, batch mode, namely boiling of the working medium in the first compartment and simultaneous condensing in the second compartment during the first stage and evaporating in the second compartment and simultaneous absorbing in the first compartment during the second stage. The heat transfer arrangement then utilizes the heat given off or taken in during the absorption cycle for heating/air conditioning in a conventional manner.

  • Patent number: 5248372
Abstract: Apparatus for pickling metal sheet as it moves along a generally flat horizontal path, comprises elongated shallow and sequentially arranged electrolytic pickling and mixed acid pickling tanks each having input and output ends and through which metal sheet to be pickled is continuously fed along a linear, flat path through the use of support rolls underlying the metal sheet at spaced locations between the input and output ends of the tanks. Pickling liquid is maintained in each of the tanks at a given level above the support rolls, whereby the sheet material is immersed in the pickling liquid between the input and output ends of the corresponding tank. Each tank has guide rolls at the input and output ends thereof for guiding the sheet material therethrough, and the support rolls are driven at the speed of the sheet material to minimize the tension on the sheet as it is being pickled.

  • Patent number: 5240404
Abstract: An industrial gas burner is disclosed which operates at low air/fuel ratios to avoid NO.sub.x formation without carbon sooting. The burner includes a refractory block having a cylindrically stepped throat passage extending therethrough, a housing adjacent the inlet end of the refractory block and a swirl plate inbetween the block and housing. Vane passages in the swirl plate provide fluid communication between the throat passage and an annular entrainment passage in the housing. A plurality of circumferentially spaced gas jet nozzles in the entrainment passage cause jet entrainment and mixing of fuel and combustion air which is ported to the entrainment chamber. The jet streams of mixed air/fuel impinge the swirl plate whereat the mixture undergoes a further mixing because of the pressure drop and swirling therein. The swirling air/fuel mixture is thus intimately and thoroughly mixed when it exits the swirl plate as a swirling mass at the entry end of the throat passage where it is ignited.

  • Patent number: 5228513
Abstract: An improved convective heat transfer arrangement is disclosed achieving overall heat transfer efficiencies in the neighborhood of 30 Btu/(hr. ft.sup.2 .degree. F.). A heat transfer conduit including a heat transfer wall is axially divided into a plurality of axially extending heat transfer chambers by a plurality of transversely extending baffles. Each baffle is especially configured to have an axially extending recess formed therein through which extends an orifice opening. Heat transfer gas pumped through the conduit cascades through the heat transfer chambers forming and reforming nascent free standing jet streams through each baffle orifice which impinge the heat transfer wall to achieve very high heat transfer coefficients while efficiently utilizing the available heat in the heat transfer gas.

  • Patent number: 5228850
Abstract: An improved industrial furnace employing a new and unique heat transfer arrangement is disclosed. The furnace is a closed end cylindrical chamber with a circular, concentrically positioned plate dividing one side of the furnace into a fan chamber containing a fan and the other side of the furnace into a heat treat chamber containing the work. The plate has a central under-pressure opening and its outer circular edge is spaced from the cylindrical wall to define an annular space which is non-orificing. Fan rotation in the fan chamber produces an annulus of wind mass swirling at high circumferential speed which axially travels through the non-orificing space towards the closed end of the heat treat chamber at slow speed. Heating elements extend through the non-orificing space into the heat transfer chamber and are constantly impinged by the swirling annulus wind mass to effect good heat transfer therewith.
