Abstract: A radio transmission power control circuit includes a radio frequency (rf) downconverter that produces a downconverter output representative of the difference between a first downconverter input based on a transmitted signal of a radio transmitter and a second downconverter input based on a local oscillator signal. A receiver baseband circuit processes the downconverter output to produce an analog power signal representative of the transmitted signal. A digital to analog converter converts the analog power signal to a representative digital power signal. A feedback control circuit produces a transmitter gain control signal to control transmitted signal power so as to minimize the difference between the digital power signal and a power reference signal.
Abstract: A method of producing a MEMS device removes the bottom side of a device wafer after its movable structure is formed. To that end, the method provides the device wafer, which has an initial bottom side. Next, the method forms the movable structure on the device wafer, and then removes substantially the entire initial bottom side of the device wafer. Removal of the entire initial bottom side effectively forms a final bottom side.

Abstract: In a semiconductor-fabrication equipment of a minienvironment system, ambient air is prevented from entering a gap between an opening of the semiconductor-fabrication equipment and a wafer gateway of a hermetic container to prevent dust entrained in the ambient air from adhering to wafers in the hermetic container.
Abstract: A micro-programmable digital filter includes a plurality of programmable filter elements, an instruction memory for storing a control program, at least one instruction decoder for programming the filter elements based on the control program, and arithmetic logic for selectively scaling and accumulating output values received from the filter elements and providing accumulated values as inputs to the filter elements. The filter elements are typically coupled in series so that a coefficient output from one filter element can be passed to an adjacent filter element for implementing longer filters. A separate instruction decoder may be included for each filter element. Execution of the separate instruction decoders is typically staggered so that the instruction decoders can share the instruction memory and an accumulator without collision. Each filter element can be programmed to implement a different filtering function, or multiple filter elements can be programmed to operate on a single filtering function.
Abstract: A micro-programmable filter (MFE) engine includes multiple programmable filter elements and a microcode controller. The filter elements can be configured, controlled, and combined in different ways to implement different types of filters. The MFE preferably supports multiple-execution instructions that allow a single instruction to perform multiple moves into accumulators for efficient data movement inside MFE.

Abstract: One or more fixed sensing electrodes are employed to sense movement of a mass both within the plane of the mass/electrodes and along an axis normal to that plane. In order to measure movement of the mass along the axis normal to the plane, a reference capacitance is measured between the fixed sensing electrode(s) and an underlying conducting plane and a measurement capacitance is measured between the mass and the underlying conducting plane. A value Cv-KCf may be computed, where Cf is the reference capacitance, Cv is the measurement capacitance, and K is a predetermined constant. In accordance with certain embodiments of the invention, a standard one or two axis acceleration sensor that measures movement of the mass within the plane can be used to also measure movement of the mass in the axis normal to the plane.
Abstract: A computer-implemented method and computer program product for selecting a portfolio weight (subject to specified constraints) for each of a plurality of assets of an optimal portfolio. A mean-variance efficient frontier is calculated based on input data characterizing the defined expected return and the defined standard deviation of return of each of the plurality of assets. Multiple sets of optimization inputs are drawn from a distribution of simulated optimization inputs consistent with the defined expected return, the defined standard deviation of return of each of the plurality of assets and then a simulated mean-variance efficient frontier is computed for each set of optimization inputs. A meta-resampled efficient frontier is determined as a statistical mean of associated portfolios among the simulated mean-variance efficient frontiers, and a portfolio weight is selected for each asset from the meta-resampled efficient frontier according to a specified investment objective.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for growing a crystalline or poly-crystalline body from a melt is described, wherein the melt is retained by capillary attachment to edge features of a mesa crucible. The boundary profile of the resulting melt surface results in an effect which induces a ribbon grown from the surface of the melt to grow as a flat body. Further, the size of the melt pool is substantially reduced by bringing these edges close to the ribbon, thereby reducing the materials cost and electric power cost associated with the process.
Abstract: A method of preparation of a Lithographic Printing Plate comprising the steps of, selecting a substrate for making of the printing plate from a natural or synthetic polymeric sheet element material having a tensile strength in the range of 400 to 3000 Kgm/cm2 and thickness ranging from 75 microns to 250 microns; shrinking the said substrate to have shrinkage in the range of 0.2 to 2.0% by exposing the substrate to heat of temperatures ranging from 140 to 180 degrees Celsius for 8 to 12 minutes; subbing the substrate to alter the surface energy of the substrate; forming a hydrophilic lithographic coating by reacting a hydrophilic binder with a cross linking agent, an accelerator, at least one pigment, at least one cationic surfactant and particulate silica having micron size ranging between 1 to 5 microns and a pore volume ranging between 0.2 ml/gm to 1.
Abstract: A system and method for inspecting an object with multiple sources of penetrating radiation. Irradiation of the inspected object by the sources is temporally sequenced such that the source of detected scattered radiation is unambiguous. Thus, multiple views of the inspected object may be obtained and image quality may be enhanced, even in a compact geometry in which the beams are substantially coplanar.
Abstract: A method apparatus and computer program product for providing access to host attribute information in a storage area network is disclosed. The storage area network is composed of a plurality of hosts coupled to at least one initiator. Each initiator is coupled to one or more targets and each initiator has an associated identifier. In each host, the identifier of the initiator is related to other host attribute information. The identifier may be, for example, a world wide name. The host attribute information including the identifier is sent from each of the plurality of hosts to the one or more targets and stored in memory of an associated storage array. Either a host or requestor remote from the storage array may request the collected host attribute information from the storage array. A topology of the storage area network may then be formed from the host attribute information of each host.

Abstract: A medical valve has a resilient member that is forcibly expanded to an expanded volume from a normal volume. Specifically, the valve operates in a closed mode that prevents fluid flow, and an open mode that permits fluid flow. To these ends, the valve has a housing having an inlet and an outlet, and the noted resilient member within the housing. The resilient member and housing form a fluid channel between the inlet and the outlet. The fluid channel at least in part extends through the resilient member. The fluid channel has a given portion formed by a variable volume portion of the resilient member. The variable volume portion has a normal volume when in the closed mode, and an expanded volume when the open mode. The expanded volume is greater than the normal volume.
Abstract: A powered orthotic device, worn about a patient's elbow or other joint, senses relatively low level signals in the vicinity of the joint generated by a patient having spinal cord or other nerve damage. In response to the relatively low level signals, the powered orthotic device moves, causing the patient's joint to move accordingly.
Abstract: Two or more high-frequency microphones are used to determine where an individual spark or other excitation beam strikes a sample in an optical emission spectroscopy (OES) instrument. The position of the spark can be correlated with the elemental composition of the material in the sample vaporized by the spark. The microphones are placed appropriately in air around a sparker of the instrument, or appropriately on the sample, or on both the sample and in the air. Arrival times of sound from the spark to the microphones, or a difference in the arrival times, yields information, from which the position of the spark relative to the microphones, and hence the absolute position of the spark, is deduced, such as by triangulation. Optionally or in addition, a signal that indicates a time when the spark is produced is correlated with one or more spectra detected by a spectrometer, so a spectrum that results from the vaporized sample can be distinguished from a spectrum that results from heated gas above the sample.
Abstract: An LED source for a liquid crystal display includes a heat sink having a top surface and a first side surface and a plurality of LEDs arranged in a row. Each LED includes a base and a first lead and is disposed such that the base of each LED contacts the top surface of the heat sink. A first circuit board is disposed such that the first circuit board contacts the first side surface of the heat sink.
Abstract: An apparatus and method of processing object data (e.g., a scene having one or more objects) logically divide the object space into a plurality of contiguous (or noncontiguous) portions. At least two portions each have object data for such object(s). The apparatus and method also determine a positional priority of the at least two portions of the object space for a given viewpoint. Next, the apparatus and method merge rendered object data after at least some of the object data is rendered. This merging is based upon the positional priority of the at least two portions.
Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for evaluating among the limbs of a subject the distribution of impairments of the subject's ability to coordinate the muscular contractions to execute effective postural movements. The subject may be placed on two independently movable support surfaces, either of which may be fixed or sway-referenced. The subject's ability to maintain his or her equilibrium position is then monitored. In another embodiment, the subject is perturbed from a position of equilibrium. The perturbation may be caused by a displacement of the support surfaces, or by having the subject grasp a handle, which may be moved, or against which the subject may push or pull. The latency and strength of the responses of the subject's limbs are measured and compared to each other and to a normal population.
Abstract: A removable cleat for a shoe is described. The cleat includes a ground-engaging structure for engaging the ground. An attachment structure is for removably attaching the cleat to the footwear. The attachment structure has a vertical axis, a base to which the top of the ground-engaging member is attached, and multiple extensions projecting radially outward from the base. The extensions are adapted for insertion into a cleat receptacle in the shoe to engage a receptacle attachment structure within the receptacle, so that when the cleat is attached to the receptacle, each cleat extension will be securely engaged above a receptacle restraining ledge.
