  • Patent number: 5488148
Abstract: A process for sulfonating internal olefins wherein a dilute solution of the internal olefins in an inert hydrocarbon solvent is sulfonated to produce a reaction mixture containing intermediate sulfonated compounds, the intermediate sulfonated compounds in the reaction mixture being neutralized under conditions to form neutralized sulfonated compounds, the neutralized sulfonated compounds in the reaction mixture being hydrolyzed to form a product mixture containing hydroxy alkane sulfonates and alkene sulfonates that are then recovered.

  • Patent number: 5484040
Abstract: A slip-type gripping assembly comprises an outer body defining a longitudinal through opening for receipt of the object. A number of slip bodies are circumferentially spaced about the through opening and are radially movable toward and away from the locus of the object. Each slip body is pivotable about a generally longitudinal axis generally circumferentially centered with respect to the slip body as well as about a tangential axis. A respective force transfer formation is cooperative between each slip body and the outer body for transferring radial force therebetween while permitting the pivoting.

  • Patent number: 5484510
Abstract: A water distillation apparatus and method include an improved control system for operation and maintenance, condensers with plastic to metal seals between a plastic condenser manifold and metallic cooling tubes, and a filter with steam bypass to allow for easy sterilization of the filter and remaining distillation system. The control system includes a three pronged probe assembly for monitoring conditions within an evaporation chamber. One of the three probes monitors steam conductivity and provides a steam fault signal to indicate an upper level of contaminants in the steam. A purge pump is responsive to fault signals, including the steam fault signal, to pump water from the evaporation chamber.

  • Patent number: 5480163
Abstract: A replaceable sealing member is disclosed which includes a body, lip seal and bonded reinforcement section having a skirt portion and a lip support surface. The skirt portion and lip support restrict elastomeric flow of the body and lip seal portion of the sealing member to prevent extrusion damage. A radially extending flange, from which the skirt portion axially projects, is bonded to the body and has an abutment surface on one side for abutment against a shoulder in a metallic support, such as in a mud pump piston hub, for limiting axial movement of the replaceable sealing member.

Abstract: A high visibility indicator 12 for fitting to the rotatable drive shaft 11 of a rotary actuator 10 is capable of being rotated from a first position to a second position to indicate corresponding first and second positions of the actuator 10. The indicator 12 has an inner cylindrical member 13 fitted to the shaft 11, an outer cylindrical member 15 secured to the housing 10 of the actuator 10, and a sleeve member 17 interposed between members 13, 15 and drivingly connected to each via pin and slot connections 15A, 19, 14A, 18, which are arranged so that rotary movement of inner member 13 produces axial movement of sleeve member 17. The members 13, 15, 17 have color-coded surfaces arranged such that when the sleeve member 17 is at one end of its axial travel, a first color-coded arrangement is visible and when the sleeve member 17 is at the other end of its axial travel, a second color-coded arrangement is visible.

  • Patent number: 5467819
Abstract: An anchor (A) is secured in a cased well bore by a setting tool (T) having latch (10) that releasably secures with the anchor (A). A whipstock (27) has surfaces (33) which are engaged with shaft surfaces (32) at the earth's surface to orient the whipstock to face in a desired direction. The whipstock (27) is then lowered into a cased well bore and releasably latched to the anchor (A) by retrievable latch (35) engaged in recess (3) of the anchor and secured against rotation by surface 31d engaged in whipstock latching surface 8 on the anchor (A). A lateral well bore (47) can then be drilled from the cased well bore in the desired direction and at the desired elevation. The whipstock (27) may be connected with a drill string (DS) for lowering into an anchor (A) in the well bore. If desired, an ordinary well string 53 with latch arrangement (77) cooperates with latch arrangement (78) in the whipstock (27) to retrieve the whipstock from the anchor (A), or to position the whipstock in the anchor (A).

  • Patent number: 5462117
Abstract: A reliable tubing conveyed perforating operation may be coupled with methods and equipment for substantially minimizing the loss of completion fluids, thereby allowing recovery of the expensive completion fluids and preventing damage to the formation. A one-way valve is biased for closing the interior of the tubing string, but is normally held open by a stop member structurally interconnected to the perforating gun. Upon the firing of the perforating gun, an automatic gun release mechanism allows the gun to drop in the wellbore, thereby axially dropping the stop member from a position which prevents the closure of the one-way valve. According to the method of the present invention, the tubing string above a set packer may be disconnected and picked up to isolate the tubing string from the perforating gun. The perforating gun may then be fired and, the one-way valve is automatically closed so that completion fluids above the one-way valve will not be lost in the perforations below the one-way valve.

  • Patent number: 5461905
Abstract: Equipment and techniques test the integrity of one or more seals within an oilfield tubular threaded connection 12. A test fixture 74 may be utilized including three axially spaced sensors 92, 86 and 88 which are each responsive to radial deformation of an outer surface of an internally pressurized threaded connection. Excessive radial deformation indicates a failure of at least one of the threaded connection seals. A relatively simple yet highly reliable technique is provided for quickly and easily determining the sealing integrity of a threaded connection made up at a well site. If any one of the multiple seals fails during the test, the operator may either break out and re-test the connection, or may make up and test a new threaded connection. The present invention may be used for substantially increasing the integrity of oilfield tubular connections and thereby reducing the overall cost of hydrocarbon exploration and recovery operations.

  • Patent number: 5460230
Abstract: The present invention discloses a core bit comprised of a body having blades thereon, with several cutters on each blade, and nozzles that emerge on the face of the body. The nozzles deflect liquids substantially obliquely with respect to an axis of rotation of the body, preferably according to an angle greater than 45.degree.. The nozzle defines an elbow portion formed from a molded portion of the body and from an insert opposite said molded portion on the side of the largest curvature of radius of the elbow. An inner hollow core retaining element includes an axial annular lip to engage an annular groove in the body. The annular lip and groove define a passage gap to regulate coring liquid flow therethrough. An inner portion between the blades has a cross-section with a curve having a most forward point adjacent the core, the curve having a first convex portion from the forward point to adjacent the insert and a second convex portion extending laterally outwardly.
