Patent number: 5454668Abstract: A trench is excavated from the top surface of an earthen dike, all the way down into the foundation below the base of the dike. Dry powder, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PHPA) is mixed with fresh water and soda ash in proportions of 20 lbs PHPA, to 4 lbs of soda ash, to 68 barrels of fresh water (2856 gallons) to form a slurry having a funnel viscosity of at least 45 sec/quart. As the trench is being excavated, the slurry is pumped into the trench immediately. A section of geo-membrane having a thickness of 0.080" is placed in the trench all the way to the bottom of the trench, overlapping at the top of the membrane onto the top surface of the dike. Dry sand is then pumped into the trench to displace the slurry in the trench.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1994Date of Patent: October 3, 1995Assignee: Baroid Technology, Inc.Inventor: Andrew Liao

Patent number: 5453247Abstract: Improved techniques are provided for DNA sequencing, and particularly for sequencing of the entire human genome. Different base-specific reactions are utilized to use different sets of DNA fragments from a piece of DNA of unknown sequence. Each of the different sets of DNA fragments has a common origin and terminates at a particular base along the unknown sequence. The molecular weight of the DNA fragments in each of the different sets is detected by a matrix assisted laser absorption mass spectrometer to determine the sequence of the different bases in the DNA. The methods and apparatus of the present invention provide a relatively simple and low cost technique which may be automated to sequence thousands of gene bases per hour, and eliminates the tedious and time consuming gel electrophoresis separation technique conventionally used to determine the masses of DNA fragments.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1993Date of Patent: September 26, 1995Assignee: The Rockefeller UniversityInventors: Ronald C. Patent number: 5453207Abstract: A system and method for the delivery and application of a biocide treatment to a facility. A specially adapted vehicle is used to transport biocide precursors, and a generator capable of generating biocide from those precursors, to the site of the facility to be treated. Incompatible precursors are isolated from each other in separate compartments in the vehicle. At the site, the generator is communicated with a fluid flow path passing through the facility to be treated. While biocide is being generated in the generator from the precursors, a carrier liquid is simultaneously circulated through the fluid flow path, including the generator, so that biocide from the generator is introduced to the carrier liquid and thereby carried from the generator through the facility to treat it.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1993Date of Patent: September 26, 1995Inventors: Gregory D. Patent number: 5451779Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining at least one characteristic of a formation is provided which includes storing a plurality of counts received from both a long space radiation detector and a short space radiation detector. The counts are detected during a plurality of short duration time periods which are brief compared to rotary drilling speed. A count rate mean is determined and used to sort each of the plurality of count measurements into one of at least three bins. Count information accumulated in at least one of the bins is used to calculate a corrected density. A short space collimator enhances the count rate of singly scattered gamma rays detected by the short space detector and blocks gamma rays from the formation radially outwardly of the short space detector to improve spine-rib correction characteristics for relatively short standoffs. The method of sorting the plurality of short duration time period measurements improves the accuracy for short standoffs to larger standoffs.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1993Date of Patent: September 19, 1995Assignee: Baroid CorporationInventors: Ronald L.
