Abstract: Polyquaternary polymeric flocculants, containing a substantially reduced total residual amount of epihalohydrin and 1,3-dihalo-2-propanol and less than about 1000 ppm of dialkylamine, are produced by reacting a polyquaternary polymer prepared from epihalohydrin, dialkylamine, and optionally a polyfunctional amine with a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3), and R.sub.5 is hydrogen or hydroxyl.

Abstract: The amount of isomelamine impurities formed in the reaction of melamine and an alkanolamine may be reduced by using isopropanolamine as the alkanolamine.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of ortho-methyldiphenylmethane, a compound useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of anthraquinone, using liquid hydrogen fluoride to catalyze the alkylation of benzene with .alpha.-chloro-o-xylene at temperatures from about -10.degree. C. to 10.degree. C.
Abstract: Flame retardant polyphenylene ether resins are prepared using phosphine oxides of the formula: ##STR1## wherein Y is alkylene, substituted xylylene, bis(methylene)anthrylene, and bis(methylene)tetrahydronaphthalene.
Abstract: The manufacture of a substantially fully methylated, substantially fully methylolated melamine composition is carried out by a continuous process in which the methylolation of melamine is conducted in two stages, the first stage being effected at an acidic pH and the second stage being effected at an alkaline pH. The reaction mixture is then concentrated and reacted with methanol after which all of the unreacted volatiles and precipitated salts are removed to provide the product composition.
Abstract: Isopropylidenedicyclohexylene esters of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-4-carboxylic acid are disclosed as well as their use as light stabilizers for thermoplastic polymers such as polypropylene.
Abstract: Flame retardant, rubber-modified polyphenylene ether resin compositions are prepared using a phosphine oxide of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is cycloalkyl, phenyl, carbamoylethyl or carboalkoxyethyl; and Y is alkylene, substituted xylylene, and bis-(methyl)terephthalate.
Abstract: Flame retardant compositions are prepared from rubber-modified polyphenylene ether resins and a phosphine oxide of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, carboxyalkyl, phenyl, halophenyl, and alkoxyphenyl, and R' is hydrogen, alkyl, omega-cyanoalkyl, benzyl, alkylbenzyl and hydroxyalkyl.
Abstract: 3-Nitrobenzoic acid is recovered from a mixture of 2-, 3- and 4-nitrobenzoic acids by basifying to a pH of 8-12 and then adding an acid to reduce the pH to 1.5-3.5 to precipitate the desired compound.
Abstract: The production of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid from anhydrous potassium 2-naphthoxide and carbon dioxide is improved by forming a mixture of 0.8-1.2 moles of 2-hydroxynaphthalene per equivalent of potassium base, dehydrating the mixture, adding carbon dioxide at about 20 to 90 psi at about 255.degree.-280.degree. C. and agitating and heating it at said pressure and temperature.

Abstract: Bis(sulfonamides) containing one or more hindered phenol groups are disclosed, as is their use as thermal stabilizers for polymers. Further stabilization results from combinations thereof with a thiodipropionate ester and a divalent metal salt of a carboxylic acid.
Abstract: Polyphenylene ether resin compositions are flame retarded by using specified phosphine oxides of the formula(R).sub.3 P.dbd.Owherein R is alkyl, haloalkyl, phenyl, halophenyl, benzyl, alkylbenzyl, or cycloalkyl.
Abstract: Flame retardant poly(butylene terephthalate) compositions are prepared by incorporating into the polymer a combination of a polymeric pentaerythrityl phosphonate and melamine pyrophosphate.
Abstract: Epoxy based synthetic solders are prepared from (a) at least one epoxy resin, (b) at least one filler, (c) 1,1'-o-phenylenebis-(3,3-dimethylurea) wherein the phenyl moiety is optionally substituted with up to two alkyl (C.sub.1-3) groups and (d) dicyandiamide.
Abstract: Storage-stable, room-temperature-curing, water-based coating compositions are prepared from emulsified copolymers containing amide functionality and using glyoxal as the cross-linking agent.
Abstract: Phosphonate compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, R.sub.1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, and y is an integer from 0 to 2, are useful as flame retardants for thermoplastic polymers, especially linear thermoplastic polyesters.
Abstract: Polymeric polyesters containing a 2,2,6,6-tetralkyl piperidine moiety in the repeating unit are disclosed as light stabilizers for polymers subject to degradation by ultra-violet light.
