  • Patent number: 5970413
Abstract: A method for determining the position of a mobile station within a cellular telephone system having a plurality of cells. Voice information signals are transmitted between a first base station transmitter and a mobile station on a transmission channel. Thereafter, transmissions from the first base station transmitter of voice information signals on the transmission channel are ceased for a predetermined period of time. During the predetermined period of time when transmissions of voice information signals from the first base station transmitter have ceased on the transmission channel, the mobile station makes positional measurements. The position of the mobile station is determined in accordance with the positional measurements.

  • Patent number: 5960361
Abstract: A base station of the cellular telephone forward link power control system transmits frames initially at a high default transmit power level, then decreases the power level incrementally until either a frame erasure is detected, triggering an immediate sharp increase in transmission power, or until a predetermined period of time has elapsed, after which the base station performs a fast downward move in the transmit power level. The fast downward move constitutes a sharp reduction in the transmit power level. In one example, the fast downward move is performed if one hundred consecutive frames are successfully transmitted without a frame erasure. By providing the fast downward move in transmit power, the power transmitted is decreased on the average. In particular, the fast downward move allows the amount of transmit power to be reduced significantly in circumstances where slow incremental decreases in power would result in excess power being employed. Method and apparatus embodiments are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5943014
Abstract: A method for determining the position of a mobile station within a cellular telephone system having a plurality of base stations. A signal is transmitted at a low power level from the mobile station. The strength of the signal is then temporarily increased from the low power level to an increased power level, and the signal is temporarily transmitted from the mobile station at this increased power level. While the signal is being temporarily transmitted from the mobile station at the increased power level, the signal is used to make at least a first positional measurement. The position of the mobile station is determined in accordance with the first positional measurement.

  • Patent number: 5943615
Abstract: An apparatus for providing authentication of a mobile station in a wireless communication system. The present invention takes the number dialed by the mobile station user and computes the 24 bit number (AUTH.sub.-- DATA) for authentication in accordance with a hashing function that has the following characteristics. The hashing function takes as its input at least the entire dialed digit string contained in the request for service and the number of digits. In a preferred embodiment, the ordering of the digits affects the result, as well as, the values of the digits. The preferred embodiment of the hashing function also accepts some or all of the mobile station identifier data. The function provides as output a number of suitable size for input to a second calculation of an authentication signature, such as the 24 bits required for AUTH.sub.-- DATA. The output number is created in such a way that there is a minimum likelihood that other sets of dialed digits may create the same result.

  • Patent number: 5940761
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing inter-system hard handoff between communication systems or inter-frequency hard handoff within a CDMA communication system is disclosed. The purpose of this invention is to reduce the probability of dropped calls during inter-system hard handoff. In the event that a hard handoff attempt is unsuccessful, the mobile station will return to the original system with information which the communication system of the present invention uses to assist in the performance of future handoff attempts. Alternatively, with no handoff attempt made, the mobile station monitors the destination system then returns to the original system with information used to assist in subsequent handoff attempts. The information returned from monitoring a CDMA system consists of results of a search for one or more pilots given at offsets in a specific list provided to the mobile station by the base station or a set of offsets based upon a predetermined search algorithm.

  • Patent number: 5930230
Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for high rate CDMA wireless communication is described. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a set of individually gain adjusted subscriber channels are formed via the use of a set of orthogonal subchannel codes having a small number of PN spreading chips per orthogonal waveform period. Data to be transmitted via one of the transmit channels is low code rate error correction encoded and sequence repeated before being modulated with one of the subchannel codes, gain adjusted, and summed with data modulated using the other subchannel codes. The resulting summed data is modulated using a user long code and a pseudorandom spreading code (PN code) and upconverted for transmission. The use of the short orthogonal codes provides interference suppression while still allowing extensive error correction coding and repetition for time diversity to overcome the Raleigh fading commonly experienced in terrestrial wireless systems.

  • Patent number: 5923650
Abstract: In a communication system capable of variable rate transmission, multi-level scheduling improves utilization of the reverse link and decreases the transmission delay in data communication. Multi-level scheduling comprises base station level scheduling, selector level (system level) scheduling, and network level scheduling. Network level scheduling is performed for base station in soft handoff with base stations which are controlled by different selector scheduler. Selector level scheduling is performed for remote stations in soft handoff with base stations which are controlled by the same selector scheduler. And base station level scheduling is performed for remote stations not in soft handoff. Base station level scheduled is performed using residual capacity after higher level scheduling have been performed. Each scheduling level can have different scheduling interval.

  • Patent number: 5917837
Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and apparatus for decoding a frame of digital data which contains redundant information provided to validate the decoding operation. In the present invention, a frame of data contains information bits and cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits. The received frame is decoded and a check is conducted to determine whether the CRC bits correspond correctly for the decoded information bits. If the decoded frame passes the CRC test process, the decoded fame is provided to the user. However, if the decoded frame does not pass the CRC test, then at least one additional decoding process is performed on the received frame. In the first exemplary embodiment of the present invention, if the CRC test is failed, a noise vector of a predetermined set of noise vectors is summed with the received frame and the resultant frame is decoded for a second time.

  • Patent number: 5917812
Abstract: A system and method for reducing radio frequency interference arising in connection with pulsed transmission over time division multiplexed communication channels. In a first embodiment, a subscriber station is nominally assigned all of the slots of each frame of a first transmit channel. By transmitting RF energy substantially continuously, the subscriber station reduces interference arising from pulsed transmission. In a second embodiment, a subscriber station is nominally assigned one or more slots of each frame of a primary channel for conventional transmission of useful information, and is also instructed to continuously transmit RF energy over an auxiliary channel at times other than during the assigned primary channel slots. In this way, interference generated in the vicinity of the subscriber station is reduced due to the substantially continuous transmission of RF energy by the subscriber station.

  • Patent number: 5914950
Abstract: In a communication system capable of variable rate transmission, scheduling of high speed data transmission improves utilization of the reverse link and decreases the transmission delay in data communication. Each remote station is assigned a maximum unscheduled transmission rate for the duration of the communication with a cell. A maximum scheduled transmission rate can be assigned by a channel scheduler for scheduled transmission of data traffic at high rates. The maximum scheduled transmission rate is assigned in accordance with a set of system goals, a list of system constraints, and collected information on the status of the communication network. Data is partitioned in data frames and transmitted over the reverse link at or below the maximum scheduled transmission rate which have been assigned to the scheduled user.

  • Patent number: 5909434
Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for generating a constant data rate channel supporting signaling data transmission in an adjustable rate wireless communication system is described. In accordance with one aspect of the invention the rate at which the channel operates may be adjusted based on the particular use and environmental conditions such that the appropriate data rate up to a maximum capability can be achieved. User data is then placed into frames based on the selected rate. When available, signaling data is added into each frames in a predetermined amount. The resulting frame is encoded, repeated and punctured based on the selected rate and whether signaling data has been introduced, and transmitted via RF signals to the receive system. Upon reception, the frame is processed in accordance with having only user data and with having signaling data. That is, the frame is processed both as if it had signaling data and as if no signaling data were present.

  • Patent number: 5892816
Abstract: A novel and improved method and apparatus for providing an interface to a digital wireless telephone system compatible with standard analog wire line telephones and analog wire line fax machines is disclosed. During a telephone call, a fax detector monitors the incoming data for fax signals. If a fax is detected, the data processor switches from processing the data as if it were voice to processing it as fax. In addition, the remote station is sent a signal notifying it to process the data as fax rather than voice. The fax detector operates by detecting the preamble of a V.21 message, present at the beginning of every fax call. Energy is measured in both frequencies of the BFSK signals. A decision is made by analyzing these energies and locating a specific pattern which repeats itself a sufficient number of times.
