    Abstract: In a continuous flow reactor one or more bisphenols is converted by the action of phosgene and aqueous base into a mixture of mono- and bisphenol chloroformates which are then treated with a catalyst, additional aqueous caustic and a monophenol to afford endcapped polycarbonates. At relatively high levels of added monophenol endcapped polycarbonate oligomers are obtained. The method is especially suited for the continuous preparation of endcapped oligomers of tetrabromobisphenol A polycarbonate. The method is characterized by efficient use of phosgene, and conversion of chloroformate groups to carbonate linkages aided by trialkylamine catalysts bearing at least one methyl group on nitrogen, such as N,N-dimethylbutylamine (DMBA).

    Abstract: Block copolyestercarbonates may be prepared by first conducting a reaction between at least one of resorcinol or an alkyl- or haloresorcinol and at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichloride, preferably isophthaloyl dichloride, terephthaloyl dichloride or a mixture thereof, to produce a hydroxy-terminated polyester intermediate, and then conducting a reaction of the intermediate with a carbonate precursor, preferably in the presence of a dihydroxy compound such as bisphenol A. The products have excellent physical properties, including a high degree of weatherability. They may be blended with other polymers such as polycarbonates, poly(alkylene carboxylates), polyarylates, polyetherimides, and addition polymers to improve the weatherability thereof.

    Abstract: An electroslag refining apparatus includes upper and lower integral crucibles, with the lower crucible having a drain. In situ hot start is effected by depositing in the lower crucible a pre-refined starter. The starter is melted in the lower crucible to form a starter pool, and slag is deposited atop the starter pool for being melted thereby to develop a slag pool thereatop. An ingot electrode is lowered through the upper crucible to immerse a tip thereof into the slag pool. The electrode is powered to effect resistance heating of the slag pool to melt the electrode tip. The slag and starter pools are increased in volume into the upper crucible, with the drain then being opened to effect steady state operation.

    Abstract: An exemplary embodiment of the present invention is a method for calculating at least one confidence interval. The method comprises a set of instructions that activate a calculator. The user selects input data, which the calculator reformats to generate output data. The calculator then generates both a calibration summary and specific calibration summary containing calibration standard measurements from the output data. A linear calibration curve and residual calibration value plot are derived from these calibration standard measurements. The calculator calculates a back-calculated unknown sample value using the information gathered from the linear calibration curve and residual calibration value plot. The calculator can then calculate the confidence interval for the back-calculated unknown sample value.

    Abstract: A tampon showing improved leakage protection through improved expansion characteristics is disclosed. The tampons disclosed demonstrate these improved expansion characteristics particularly in the width dimension without introducing new drawbacks. Preferred tampons are described which are compressed to an initial size comparable to current tampons, but which expand to a width exceeding that achieved by current tampons. Such increased expansion is preferably accomplished without an increase in the total absorbency of the tampon. Tampons of various absorbencies are disclosed having increased total expansion in the width direction compared to current tampons. Additionally, tampons of various absorbencies which expand to a greater degree in the width direction under pressure are also disclosed. Tampons of various absorbencies which expand at a rate exceeding that achieved previously are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method for reducing in situ the electrochemical corrosion potential and susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking of a nickel-base alloy and boiling water nuclear reactor components formed therefrom when in contact with high temperature water. The method comprises the steps of: adding a metal hydride to the high temperature water; dissociating the metal hydride in the high temperature water to form a metal and at least one hydrogen ion; and reducing the concentration of the oxidizing species by reacting the hydrogen ions with an oxidizing species, thereby reducing in situ the electrochemical corrosion potential of the nickel-base alloy. The method may further include the steps of reacting the metal with oxygen present in the high temperature water to form an insoluble oxide and incorporating the metal into the surface of the nickel-base alloy, thereby reducing the electrical conductivity of the surface of the nickel-base alloy.

    Abstract: A coating composition produces a protective coating to a substrate, which coating has an improved surface smoothness. The coating composition comprises a mixture of at least a first type of particles and a second type of particles that are dispersed in a liquid medium. The particles form a total population of particles having a median ESD in a range from about 1 to about 7 micrometers. The different types of particles have different median ESDs. The first type of particles has a maximum ESD of about 40 micrometers, and the second type of particles has a maximum ESD of about 20 micrometers. A method for producing a coating having an improved surface smoothness comprises applying such a coating composition on a substrate and curing the coating composition to produce a protective coating. The coating may be further densified by a burnishing process or further improved by applying another coating comprising particles having ESDs less than about 4 micrometers.
