Abstract: Hydrocarbons are recovered from a subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing formation penetrated by an injection well and a production well by displacing hydrocarbons toward the production well using a drive fluid such as water or brine, thickened with a copolymer of acrylamide and diacetone acrylamide alkoxylated with an alkylene oxide or glycidol, optionally sulfated or sulfonated. If desired, said drive fluid can be saturated with carbon dioxide, nitrogen, natural gas or mixtures of these gases at the injection pressure.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for regeneration of coked catalyst resulting from a hydrocarbon conversion reaction in which catalyst regeneration is carried out in a plurality of superposed regeneration zones comprising the combination of a first dense phase fluidized bed regeneration zone, an entrained catalyst dilute phase regeneration zone superposed on said first regeneration zone, and a second dense phase fluid bed regeneration zone superposed on said dilute phase regeneration zone. Catalyst is regenerated by combustion of coke from the surface of the catalyst at an elevated temperature in the range of 675.degree. to 800.degree. C. with an excess of oxygen supplied by an oxygen-containing regeneration gas part of which is introduced into the first fluidized bed regeneration zone and part into said dilute phase regeneration zone, including a novel means of control of the rate of catalyst recirculated from said second dense phase regeneration zone to said first regeneration zone.

Abstract: Disclosed are novel compounds prepared by the reaction of an adduct of a phosphosulfurized polyisoalkylene or alpha olefin with an acidified hexavalent molybdenum salt which give enhanced copper corrosion protection relative to the non-molybdenum treated adducts when incorporated in lubricants. Also disclosed is the combination of such compounds with a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, which combination imparts to lubricants an oxidation inhibition greater than is obtainable with either the zinc dialkyldithiophosphate or the molybdenum-containing adduct alone.

Abstract: A low foaming lubricating oil composition comprising a mineral oil, an oil soluble detergent-like additive which increases the foaming tendency of the lubricating oil, and an effective amount of an estolide of a hydroxy fatty acid having 10 to 24 carbon atoms which reduces the foaming tendency of the lubricating oil composition. The lubricating oil achieves the low foaming tendency without added silicone polymers and has a silicon content of less than about 10 parts per million by weight. The preferred estolide is the estolide of 12-hydroxystearic acid.
Abstract: A method for maintaining a desired catalyst regeneration temperature in a fluid catalytic cracking unit operating with complete combustion of coke to carbon dioxide when the coke content of the spent catalyst supplied to the regeneration zone from the reaction zone is insufficient to maintain the temperature in the regeneration zone necessary for complete combustion of coke to carbon dioxide in which residual liquid hydrocarbon from the cracking reaction zone is introduced into contact with partially spent cracking catalyst at cracking reaction temperature effecting conversion of said residue to volatile reaction products and additional coke deposit on the spent catalyst in an amount sufficient to maintain the temperature in the regeneration zone necessary for complete combustion of coke to carbon dioxide and substantially complete removal of carbon from the catalyst.
Abstract: In the preparation of overbased calcium sulfonates the use of a mixture of calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide wherein the mole ratio CaO/CaOH.sub.2 +Ca(OH).sub.2 ranges from 0.2 to 1.0 improves lime and sulfonate utilization and reduces the amount of solid waste material which must be filtered from the product.
Abstract: A well logging tool adapted for use in a borehole traversing an earth formation includes at least one sensor sensing at least one characteristic of the earth formation. Another sensor senses the ambient temperature and provides a corresponding temperature signal. An output circuit provides a temperature compensated output signal corresponding to the sensed characteristic of the earth formation in accordance with the temperature signal and the characteristic signal.

Abstract: A new circuit is added to the old electrical circuit including two electrodes underwater positioned very close to a gas exhausting gun gaseous exhaust such as an air gun, wherein the exhaust from the firing gas exhausting gun momentarily blows away the conductive sea water from one or both of the electrodes to produce a high voltage pulse due to the large increase in resistance in the circuit indicating the precise moment of firing of the gas exhausting gun. This new circuit added to the above circuit is a circuit polarity reversing circuit which includes particularly a positive current generator, a negative current generator, and a sea ground for forming a third electron source when any of the two electrodes becomes defective, thus forming a fail-safe system.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for selectively reducing the permeability of water producing intervals in a hydrocarbon formation without reducing oil permeability. A soluble oil followed by water is injected into the formation to lower the residual oil saturation. The well is then produced to remove water from any oil zones before injection of an isobutyl-methacrylate solution in acetone. A slug of a non-condensable gas follows the treating solution before the shutting in of the well for up to about one day.
Abstract: A method for plugging a well comprises (1) extending two sets of dogs on a bridge plug for engaging the sides of the well by releasing an expandable means, and (2) releasing a high pressure fluid for triggering and releasing the expandable means for extending the two sets of dogs for securing the bridge plug at the desired depth in the well. A bridge plug for carrying out the method is also disclosed.
Abstract: Recovery of solvent from hydrocarbon oil extract fractions comprising solvent and oil is effected in at least three sequential flash vaporization stages wherein the pressure of the second vaporization stage is at the highest pressure level and the pressure of the third vaporization stage is at a pressure level intermediate the pressure level of the first and second vaporization stages.
Abstract: A fluid catalytic cracking process and apparatus in which a plurality of hydrocarbon feedstocks including at least one normally gaseous paraffinic hydrocarbon feedstock and at least one normally liquid hydrocarbon feedstock are subjected to cracking reaction conditions in a common transport type reaction zone in the presence of a zeolite cracking catalyst. Fresh hot regenerated catalyst is first contacted with a normally gaseous paraffinic hydrocarbon under dehydrogenation reaction conditions effecting conversion to normally gaseous olefins, and fresh normally liquid cracking charge stock is contacted in the reaction zone under cracking reaction conditions with the gaseous paraffinic and olefinic hydrocarbons.
Abstract: Low molecular weight oxygenated compounds, and particularly ethylene glycol and methanol, are prepared from syngas in improved yields by contacting a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen with a catalyst system comprising a rhodium-containing compound, an organic ligand and a special cationic polynuclear aromatic compound possessing a nitrogen atom at a ring fusion position, dissolved in a suitable solvent, and heating the resulting reaction mixture at a temperature of at least 150.degree. C. and a pressure of at least 500 psi for sufficient time to produce the desired low molecular weight oxygenated compounds, and then recovering the same from the reaction mixture.
Abstract: An improvement to dipmeter logs has very closely spaced radio frequency sensor coils mounted in pairs in each of the formation contacting pads. A transmitter mounted in a sonde emits the radio frequency energy, such as in the range of from two to one hundred megahertz. The phase difference in radio frequency signals between receiver coil pairs in each pad is measured, providing improved data resolution for computing formation dip, and making possible dip measurements in wells drilled with oil base mud or air (invert type muds).

Abstract: A coating solution, useful in the process of coating a substrate with an alumina film, can be formed by adding to an alkali aluminate solution a sufficient quantity of an alumina gel which is a precipitate formed by the reaction of aluminum sulfate with aqueous ammonium hydroxide at a pH of between about 6 and 8. The added alumina gel effects a coating of an adherent alumina trihydrate film on a substrate upon the contacting of the substrate with the coating solution.
