  • Patent number: 8285687
Abstract: A system and method for transparently compressing file system data using compression group descriptors is provided. When data contained within a compression group be compressed beyond a predefined threshold value, a compression group descriptor is included in the compression group that signifies that the data for the group of level 0 blocks is compressed into a lesser number of physical data blocks. When performing a read operation, the file system first determines the appropriate compression group that contains the desired data and determines whether the compression group has been compressed. If so, the file system decompresses the data in the compression group before returning the decompressed data. If the magic value is not the first pointer position, then the data within the compression group was previously stored in an uncompressed format, and the data may be returned without performing a decompression operation.

  • Patent number: 8285993
Abstract: A method for distributing a shared secret key among a plurality of nodes is described. Each node establishes a secret key, the number of nodes being more than two nodes. A node distributes by a ring protocol executing over computer network connections an encrypted version of the secret key of each node to other nodes of the plurality of nodes. Each node decrypts the secret keys of other nodes so that each node has the secret key of other nodes. Each node combines the secret keys of other nodes to form a shared secret key available to other nodes.

  • Patent number: 8279749
Abstract: In one embodiment, a primary head-end node (PHE) and one or more backup head-end nodes (BHEs) receive traffic from a common multicast network. The PHE establishes a primary point-to-multipoint (P2MP) tunnel and forwards the multicast traffic onto the primary P2MP tunnel. The PHE then notifies a selected BHE of one or more characteristics of the primary P2MP tunnel, and the selected BHE establishes a backup P2MP tunnel with the characteristics of the primary P2MP tunnel. In response to detecting a failure of the PHE, the BHE initiates forwarding of the multicast traffic onto the backup P2MP tunnel.

  • Patent number: 8276443
Abstract: A method of using of a level meter employing the radar principle, serving to measure the fill level of a medium in a container and incorporating an electric conductor system for conducting an electromagnetic signal into the container and returning reflected components of the electromagnetic signal from the container, the electric conductor system terminating at a predefined level in the container. In practicing the method a variation of the component of the electromagnetic signal reflected at the container-oriented end of the conductor system is utilized as an indicator of the attainment of the predefined fill level by the medium. This permits the detection of very small amounts of a medium for instance in the monitoring of drain pipes, spillway basins or leak-detection systems.

  • Patent number: 8274973
Abstract: In one embodiment, layer-2 (L2) ports of a network device may each be assigned to a particular virtual service domain (VSD). One or more virtual service engines (VSEs) may also be assigned in a particular order to each VSD, where each VSE is configured to apply a particular service to traffic traversing the VSE between ingress and egress service ports. Interconnecting the L2 ports and the ingress and egress service ports is an illustrative virtual Ethernet module (VEM), which directs traffic it receives according to rules as follows: a) into a destination VSD via the one or more correspondingly assigned VSEs in the particular order; b) out of a current VSD via the one or more correspondingly assigned VSEs in a reverse order from the particular order; or c) within a current VSD without redirection through a VSE.

  • Patent number: 8270413
Abstract: A technique is provided for implementing deep-packet inspection (DPI) services in a MPLS/VPN configured computer network. The technique employs a novel self-learning algorithm that analyzes data packets belonging to different unidirectional tunnels in the MPLS/VPN network and determines whether the analyzed data packets transport data in the same VPN. If so, the unidirectional tunnels containing the analyzed data packets are associated with a common layer-2 identification (L2ID) value. Unlike conventional flow-classification procedures, the inventive technique classifies a data packet by first associating the data packet with a L2ID value and then classifying the packet as belonging to a particular data flow based on a novel 6-tuple consisting of a conventional 5-tuple plus the packet's L2ID value.

  • Patent number: 8267938
Abstract: An instrument for establishing orientation of a pelvic prosthesis comprises a tri-pod having an angularly adjustable guide rod on it. The tips of the legs define a plane, and the guide rod is set by the surgeon to a defined orientation with respect to this plane on the basis of preoperative studies. In use, two of the legs of the instrument are positioned by the surgeon at defined anatomical locations on the pelvis (e.g., a point in the region of the posterior/inferior acetabulum and a point on the anterior superior iliac spine). The third leg then lands on the pelvis at a point determined by the position of the first two points, as well as by the separations between the third leg and the other two legs. The separations are adjustable, but are preferably fixed percentages of the separation between the first and second legs. The position of the guide rod then defines with respect to the actual pelvis the direction for insertion of a prosthesis.

  • Patent number: 8264962
Abstract: A technique dynamically resizes Traffic Engineering (TE) Label Switched Paths (LSPs) at a head-end node of the TE-LSPs in preparation to receive redirected traffic in response to an event in a computer network. The novel dynamic TE-LSP resizing technique is based on the detection of an event in the network that could cause traffic destined for one or more other (“remote”) head-end nodes of one or more TE-LSPs to be redirected to an event-detecting (“local”) head-end node of one or more TE-LSPs. An example of such a traffic redirection event is failure of a remote head-end node or failure of any of its TE-LSPs. Specifically, the local head-end node maintains TE-LSP steady state sampling and resizing frequencies to adapt the bandwidth of its TE-LSP(s) to gradual changes in the network over time.
