  • Patent number: 8260922
Abstract: A technique dynamically utilizes a plurality of multi-homed Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnels from a client node to one or more enterprise networks in a computer network. According to the technique, a VPN client node, e.g., a “spoke,” creates a plurality of multi-homed VPN tunnels with one or more servers/enterprise networks, e.g., “hubs.” The spoke designates (e.g., for a prefix) one of the tunnels as a primary tunnel and the other tunnels as secondary (backup) tunnels, and monitors the quality (e.g., loss, delay, reachability, etc.) of all of the tunnels, such as, e.g., by an Optimized Edge Routing (OER) process. The spoke may then dynamically re-designate any one of the secondary tunnels as the primary tunnel for a prefix based on the quality of the tunnels to the enterprise. Notably, the spoke may also dynamically load balance traffic to the enterprise among the primary and secondary tunnels based on the quality of those tunnels.

  • Patent number: 8260831
Abstract: A system and method for implementing storage management with threshold control is provided. A flexible storage manager associates storage devices having a similar performance characteristic into logical constructs called storage groups. Storage groups having the same performance characteristic from a plurality of storage systems are organized into storage pools. The flexible storage manager automatically provisions storage on a storage pool basis. Should a low threshold utilization be exceeded, the flexible storage manager performs a set of management policies to lower the utilization of a storage pool to the low threshold.

  • Patent number: 8254409
Abstract: In one embodiment, a network device may have its network interfaces identified as either network-to-network interfaces (NNIs) configured to communicate with other network devices in a first computer network, or user-to-network interfaces (UNIs) configured to provide service to the first computer network for user devices. Based on determining at least one NNI for forwarding upstream traffic to an aggregation device of the first network that connects the first network to a second network, any NNI that is not used for forwarding upstream traffic is deemed a novel “NNI alternate” (NNI-ALT). The forwarding of traffic at the network device may be controlled to provide user isolation between network devices by denying traffic forwarding between UNIs and NNI-ALTs as well as between NNI-ALTs and NNI-ALTs, while permitting traffic forwarding between NNIs and NNI-ALTs.

  • Patent number: 8255704
Abstract: The invention provides a mechanism for selectively encrypting media within a consolidation of storage devices into a shared configuration, i.e. a media pool. The invention also provides a mechanism by which more than one key can be used for encrypting media. The invention accomplishes tape encryption by media parsing. An encryption key is determined based on the backup application's grouping of data sets. This is accomplished by examining the volume header of the tape and, from the header, deciding if pools are supported by the application. If they are, the invention auto-creates a pool key. In the case where the pools are known in advance, a user with appropriate administrative privileges can create the pools and assign keys to them. The invention thus allows mirroring of the logical groupings in the backup application with encryption keys.

  • Patent number: 8254272
Abstract: In one embodiment, an interested node (e.g., a path computation client or “PCC”, network management node, etc.) may send a path computation element (PCE) monitor request along a particular path computation chain to request performance information about one or more PCEs along the chain. In response, the interested node may receive a PCE monitor reply having performance information about the one or more PCEs along the chain. In another embodiment, one or more PCEs (along the chain) may receive the PCE monitor request and forward the request downstream along the chain. Upon the request reaching a final PCE, each PCE along the chain may insert the requested performance information into the PCE monitor reply and forward the reply with the performance information along the path computation chain toward the interested node.

  • Patent number: 8255735
Abstract: A system and method provides for failover of guest operating systems in a virtual machine environment. During initialization of a computer executing a virtual machine operating system, a first guest operating system allocates a first memory region within a first domain and notifies a second guest operating system operating in a second domain of the allocated first memory region. Similarly, the second guest operating system allocates a second region of memory within the second domain and notifies the first operating system of the allocated second memory region. In the event of a software failure affecting one of the guest operating systems, the surviving guest operating system assumes the identity of the failed operating system and utilizes data stored within the shared memory region to replay to storage devices to render them consistent.

  • Patent number: 8249128
Abstract: A system and method is provided for improving the operating range for UWB communication systems by increasing the margin between true correlation peaks and false correlation peaks in a received UWB signal. A received signal is first correlated with a UWB kernel before being correlated with the PRN code. The UWB kernel is a very short UWB pulse having the same pulse shape as the UWB signal pulses. By pre-correlating the received signal with the UWB kernel at least once prior to correlating with the PRN code, the margin between true correlation peaks and false correlation peaks is substantially improved.

  • Patent number: 8245050
Abstract: A split knowledge protocol adapted to establish an initial key for use in authenticating a first computer to a second computer. The second computer initiates the split knowledge protocol by generating a bit sequence and splitting the sequence into a predetermined number of segments. The second computer then encrypts each segment with a predetermined key associated with each segment before transmitting each encrypted segment to the first computer. In response, the first computer decrypts each encrypted segment using the associated key. The first computer then recovers the bit sequence from the decrypted segments. Accordingly, the first and second computers have knowledge of (i.e., access to) the same bit sequence, which may thus be used as the initial key.

  • Patent number: 8245207
Abstract: A method for executing uniprocessor (UP) coded workloads in a computer capable of concurrent thread execution is disclosed. The method identifies threads in the uniprocessor coded workloads (UP-workloads) which can execute concurrently, and identifies threads in the UP-workloads which cannot execute concurrently. First threads which cannot execute concurrently are assigned to a first concurrency group. Second threads which cannot execute concurrently are assigned to a second concurrency group. Any thread in the first concurrency group can execute concurrently with any thread in the second concurrency group. The computer capable of concurrent thread execution then executes the UP-coded workloads in the first concurrency group at substantially the same time as executing the UP-coded workloads in the second concurrency group.

  • Patent number: 8237625
Abstract: In one embodiment, a multimedia control and distribution architecture is provided. A media server/controller generates a plurality of graphics signals, each graphics signal including a separate user interface to be displayed on a particular device, such as a touch screen unit. A universal extender (UVX) coupled to the media server/controller converts and extends the graphics signals for transmission on a plurality of universal transmission pathways. Each of the plurality of devices receives a graphic signal passed thereto, displays graphics embodied in the graphics signals, and accept user input in response to the graphics signal. For example, the one or more touch screen units may accept a user touch and pass a location of the user touch back on a universal transmission pathway to the UVX, for transmission to the media server/controller. The media server/controller generates control commands and provides the control commands.

  • Patent number: 8239569
Abstract: A method and apparatus for routing data in a network is disclosed. A spoke router signals its intention to act as spoke in a new bit in Hello and database descriptor packets. A router acting as hub acknowledges the spoke request. Once the spoke router receives the hub's acknowledgement, it installs a default route to the hub router. Flooding is suppressed from hub to spoke. Instead of flooding, the hub router sends empty database descriptor packets so that no request is sent from spoke routers and any further change in the topology is not sent to spoke routers. This minimizes the flooding in this environment.
