  • Patent number: 6816474
Abstract: Provided is a system and method for constructing a data message in a communications device including a processor configured to process sequentially transmitted messages. Each of the messages requires a predetermined number of data frames. The technique of the instant invention includes receiving portions of at least two of the transmitted messages in the processor. Each of the at least two received portions includes a subset of the predetermined number of data frames and excludes a remainder of the predetermined number of data frames. The subset of one of the received portions substantially matches the remainder of the other portion. Next, a determination is made as to whether a total number of the received subsets equals the predetermined number. Finally, a synthesized messaged is produced when the total number of the subsets is at least equal to the predetermined number. The synthesized message is formed of a combination of the subsets from each of the received portions.

  • Patent number: 6813478
Abstract: Techniques to search for a gated pilot reference in a wireless communication system. In one method, an overall code space in which the pilot may be found is partitioned into a number of groups of code sets, with each code set representative of all possible chip offsets of a specific PN sequence. The groups are ordered based on the likelihood of detecting the pilot in each of the groups. The groups of code sets are then used to search for the pilot, one group at a time, starting with the group most likely to result in successful pilot acquisition and ending with the group least likely to result in successful pilot acquisition. The search is terminated upon successful acquisition. The pilot search may be performed using detect, dwell, and pull-in substages. The detect substage for one group may be performed in parallel with the pull-in substage for another group.

  • Patent number: 6810235
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting communication network delays. In general, messages from vehicles are time stamped, and then the time stamp is compared to a time that each message is received by a central station. A processor at the central station then determines a time difference between the time stamp and the received time. The time difference is then compared to a predetermined time. If more than a predetermined number of messages is received by the central station exceeding the predetermined time, a notification is sent to an entity, such as personnel at the central station.

  • Patent number: 6806768
Abstract: A balanced power amplifier circuit arrangement comprises a driver amplifier stage (22) adapted to receive and amplify a signal. The amplified signal is input to a first coupler (26). The first coupler (26) produces an in-phase signal and an out-of-phase quadrature signal. A first power amplifier (38) receives and amplifies the in-phase signal. A second power amplifier (40) receives and amplifies the out-of-phase signal. A first switch (28) alternately connects an isolated port of the first coupler to ground (32) or a bypass path (36). A second coupler (42) receives and combines the amplified in-phase signal and the amplified out-of-phase signal to produce a combined signal. A second switch (30) alternately connects an isolated port of the second coupler (42) to either ground (34) or the bypass path (36). When the power amplifiers (38, 40) are powered down, the first coupler (26) splits the RF-signal into an in-phase signal and an out-of-phase signal.

  • Patent number: 6807429
Abstract: Techniques to combine soft-decision power control symbols received for multiple active base stations. In one method, a received signal is initially processed to derive soft-decision (multi-bit valued) symbols for power control commands transmitted from a number of base stations. Each soft-decision symbol for each base station is then scaled based on a scaling factor associated with the base station and which is related to the received signal quality for the power control symbols for the base station. The scaling allows power control symbols for more reliably received base stations to be given greater weights. The scaled soft-decision symbols for each power control period are then combined to provide a decision metric for the period. Each decision metric is then compared against a particular threshold, and a power control decision is derived for each decision metric based on the result of the comparison.

  • Patent number: 6807595
Abstract: A microprocessor system having an interrupt controller is provided for use in a mobile communications device. Peripheral processing units generate interrupt requests for sending to the microprocessor. The microprocessor has components for responding to interrupt requests by interrupting current processing and performing an interrupt service routine associated with the interrupt request. The interrupt controller receives interrupt requests directed to the microprocessor from the peripheral processing units and for prioritizes the interrupt requests on behalf of the microprocessor. By providing an interrupt controller for prioritizing interrupt requests on behalf of the microprocessor, the microprocessor therefore need not devote significant internal resources to prioritizing the interrupt request signals.

  • Patent number: 6804494
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed by which the effects of time of arrival errors may be reduced. In a mobile unit, such as a CDMA device, a correlation pulse is generated when a transmitted code matches a stored reference code. In the absence of multipath effects, correlation pulses are generated in response to the detection of multiple transmissions of the reference code from multiple transmitters. However, multipath effects distort the generated correlation pulses leading to errors in the time of arrival measurements. The present invention calculates the width of the correlation pulses and determines a delay correction factor based on the pulse width. The delay correction factor is added to the measured delay time to provide a more accurate delay time, thus permitting more accurate location measurements based on time of arrival. In alternative embodiments, other signal factors may also be used to apply delay correction factors.

  • Patent number: 6804218
Abstract: A system and method for detection of rate determination algorithm errors in variable rate communications system receivers. The disclosed embodiments prevent rate determination algorithm errors from causing audible artifacts such as screeches or beeps. The disclosed system and method detects frames with incorrectly determined data rates and performs frame erasure processing and/or memory state clean up to prevent propagation of distortion across multiple frames. Frames with incorrectly determined data rates are detected by checking illegal rate transitions, reserved bits, validating unused filter type bit combinations and analyzing relationships between fixed code-book gains and linear prediction coefficient gains.

  • Patent number: 6804260
Abstract: A method for selectively maintaining compression state and applying a compression technique after a PPP renegotiation on a Um interface of a wireless communication network. A communication device receives packetized data transmitted from a terminal device, which is coupled to the communication device via an Rm interface. The communication device determines whether the received packetized data comprises compressed or uncompressed data. Upon determining that the received packetized data comprises compressed data, the communication device determines whether connection information identifying a compression slot is included in the compressed data. The communication device further determines whether the connection information exceeds a highest-numbered decompression slot from a plurality of decompression slots on said Um interface.

  • Patent number: 6801760
Abstract: A radio receiver has a low noise amplifier. The low noise amplifier is enabled. If a predicted level of interference is expected to produce an acceptable bit error rate or other signal error measurement, the low noise amplifier is set to a “low” linearity level. If the predicted level of interference is not expected to be acceptable, the low noise amplifier is adjusted to a “high” level of linearity. The level of linearity required is determined by checking one or more prediction criteria: the mobile station's current operating mode, the strength of a received signal, the strength of a signal transmitted by the mobile station, the current level of interference, an acceptable level of interference, and whether the low noise amplifier is enabled or bypassed. Each of the prediction criteria may not be weighted equally. The determination is repeated as the prediction criteria change.

  • Patent number: 6801097
Abstract: A wideband Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) uses a resonant circuit tunable over a wide range of resonant frequencies. The resonant circuit includes voltage variable elements such that the resonant frequency, and thus the frequency of oscillation, may be electronically tuned. The voltage variable elements are arranged such that multiple control voltages determine the resonant frequency. A first control voltage is applied to a first set of tuning elements and operates as a coarse control of the resonant frequency. A second control voltage is applied to a second set of tuning elements and operates as a fine control of the resonant frequency. Using multiple control voltages on multiple elements allows for a wideband VCO while maintaining a low VCO gain.
