Abstract: A spray-shower pipe is equipped with flat fan nozzles having a dome-shaped indentation directed to the pipe inside and located inside a nozzle base formed with a recess that conforms with and engages the outer surface of the pipe wall and an annular extension of length corresponding to the pipe wall thickness at the circumference of the opening in which the extension is snugly seated. The front surface of the extension facing the inside of the pipe has a curvature which corresponds to the curvature of the pipe wall inside surface. The dome-shaped indentation is formed with an aperture that forms an angle with the longitudinal axis of the pipe that is slightly less than 90.degree., typically 83.degree..
Abstract: A large document scanner has a transparent top plate glass plate large enough to support an E size drawing. The base of the cabinet supports a trapezoidal mirror tilted up from the bottom with the larger parallel side above the bottom. The image of a document on the transparent plate is reflected by the trapezoidal mirror to a digital imaging camera system having a mechanically displaced electronically scanned array located inside the cabinet to the side. Tubular lamps located adjacent to bowed out upper sides between upper and lower planar reflectors illuminate the document on the transparent top glass plate.
Abstract: A housing has a flange for engagement with an evacuable vessel having a work table for supporting devices to be processed with an ion beam inside the vessel. The housing has rails extending into the vessel toward the work table. A carriage rides on the rails and has upstanding pins that engage a cassette carrying the masks to be processed. A transport mechanism housing is in sealing relationship with the bottom of the housing and supports a motor-driven drum about which a steel tape is wrapped and surrounded by a circumferential set of rollers. The far end of the steel tape is connected to the carriage. A loading door selectively closes the opening of the housing away from the vessel. The top of the housing includes a glass port.
Abstract: A wind-controlled spraying apparatus is arranged to contain electrical contacts and essential mechanical parts within a single housing and to provide switching contacts on a printed circuit board designed as part of a control circuit for the spraying apparatus. The apparatus includes a nozzle that sprays insecticides into the wind for predetermined periods of time in response to changes in wind direction indicated by a wind-blown conducting tube that contacts only one of the switching contacts on the printed circuit board at any time.
Abstract: A digital data communications system transmits digital data over a telephone line using frequency multiplexing for the different channels. Each channel includes a receiver and a transmitter coupled to the telephone line at spaced points. Each transmitter includes an FSK modulator, a bandpass filter of controllable bandwidth centered about 5 kHz with its bandwidth controlled by a bandwidth select signal related to the bandwidth needed to transmit data over that channel. A mixer combines the output of the bandpass filter with a local oscillator signal of frequency related to the selected channel to provide a difference frequency signal that is applied to a lowpass filter having a cutoff at 3 kHz that is coupled to the telephone line. Each receiver includes a lowpass filter having a cutoff at 3 kHz that couples the line to a mixer.
Abstract: A heat exchanging system for exchanging heat with contaminated water includes a housing having a coaxial tube exchanger assembly with return passages in the housing ends for the outer tubes and return tube bends for the inner tubes. A filter at the inlet of the coaxial tube assembly is formed of a number of passages in parallel with right angle bends defined by parallel fins between a bottom plate and transparent top plate. For cleaning there is a pressure chamber, a fill valve and an air valve intermittently activated. There is also a drain valve and a vacuum release valve. Heat exchanger tube is manufactured by rotatably and axially feeding tubing through a repeating impacting pointed power hammer that forms sharp edge craters on the exterior of the tube and sharp peaks on the interior. An impact tool driven by a powered impact hammer strikes the tubing passing through a tube pathway defined by variable direction rollers. A power drive roller has its axis askew to the axis of the tube.
Abstract: A procedure for detecting malignancy includes culturing human colon tumor cells in a capillary system. A rabbit is immunized with byproducts of the culture. An antibody produced in the rabbit is labeled with .sup.125 I using lactoperoxidase according to a known method. Blood samples are drawn from a being to be tested. The drawn blood is processed to produce serum. The immune complexes are removed from the serum with purified protein A from the Staphlococcus Aureus Cowan strain. The removed immunocomplexes are dissociated with 0.2M glycene/HCl pH 2.8. The labeled antibody is combined with the antigen component of the immunocomplex to produce a new labeled immunocomplex. The newly formed immunocomplex is precipitated with PEG 6000. The newly formed labeled immunocomplexes are counted in a gamma auto counter.
Abstract: A gas separation membrane has a dense separating layer about 10,000 Angstroms or less thick and a porous support layer 10 to 400 microns thick that is an integral unit with gradually and continuously decreasing pore size from the base of the support layer to the surface of the thin separating layer and is made from a casting solution comprising ethyl cellulose and ethyl cellulose-based blends, typically greater than 47.5 ethoxyl content ethyl cellulose blended with compatible second polymers, such as nitrocellulose. The polymer content of the casting solution is from about 10% to about 35% by weight of the total solution with up to about 50% of this polymer weight a compatible second polymer to the ethyl cellulose in a volatile solvent such as isopropanol, methylacetate, methanol, ethanol, and acetone. Typical nonsolvents for the casting solutions include water and formamide.
Abstract: A metallic electrode made of platinum, platinum iridium alloy, stainless steel, stainless steel alloys, titanium, titanium alloys, tantalum or tantalum alloys is coated with iridium oxide. Ir(III) trichloride is heated in 5.5M HCl until 75-80% of the solution is evaporated. Isopropyl or ethyl alcohol is added to the evaporated solution to restore the solution to its original volume. This restored acid/alcohol solution is aged for 1-2 weeks. The metallic electrode is soaked in the aged acid/alcohol solution for 16 hours, dried for one hour at room temperature and annealed in air at 320.degree. C. for 80-90 minutes.
Abstract: An evacuable vessel having a heavy cylindrical wall seated on a generally square base has a heavy cover hinged at one end to a hinge support attached to the wall. The cover is bolted to the wall in the closed position and sealed by an O-ring. The hinge bolts are seated in a slotted hole to allow the cover to pivot about the O-ring when closing. Adjustable set screws may be used to tighten the hinge arms and introduce a selected degree of friction. Springs are connected between the outside end of each hinge arm and the base.

Abstract: A backfire feed antenna has a parabolic reflector with a ring-focus at the reflector focal point comprising a dielectric waveguide having a stem portion and a cap portion with a pointed end and most of the stem portion inside a conducting tube along the axis of the parabolic reflector. The outer surface of the cap portion is concave outward and convex inward and covered with a conducting layer. A curve between a parabola and hyperbola defines the surface. The cap portion has a conical surface extending between an annular surface at the junction between the stem portion and the cap portion and an axially extending circumferential surface surrounding the conducting layer. The inside end of the dielectric waveguide is pointed.
Abstract: A multiplicity of parallel heat transfer tubes each sealed with refrigerant are journaled for rotation at each end and in a bulkhead that separates the air flow channel in a counterflow heat exchanger into ingoing and outgoing parallel channels. Each heat transfer element has closely spaced circular fins extending radially outward from each tube, the spacing between adjacent fins being less than the fin radius. A motor and transmission cause each heat transfer element to rotate about its longitudinal axis.

Abstract: Headphones have a small cavity between the diaphragm and the ear canal with a microphone in the cavity closely adjacent to the diaphragm slightly off the axis of the ear canal and headphone diaphragm with the microphone membrane perpendicular to the headphone diaphragm. The microphone provides a feedback signal that is combined with the input electrical signal to be reproduced by the headphones to provide a combined signal that is power amplified for driving the diaphragm. The headphone transducer has a small 23 mm diameter diaphragm with a maximum excursion of 0.6 mm peak-to-peak and a low frequency resonance of 200 Hz. A disk of intracavity damping material inside the cavity isolates the microphone from the ear canal.
Abstract: A voltage controlled oscillator includes a VCO chip that is a monolithic circuit with a Gunn diode and varactor diode intercoupled by a resonant circuit. A detector/discriminator/power divider chip is coupled to the VCO chip through a directional coupler and is a monolithic circuit having a pair of discriminator diodes and amplitude detector diode on a semi-insulating substrate with associated circuit components. Connected-together electrodes of the discriminator diodes are connected to one output of the power divider. An electrode of the amplitude detector diode is connected to the other output of the power divider. Stagger-tuned resonant circuits are coupled to the other electrodes of the discriminator diodes. Conducting portions forming low pass filters couple the amplitude detector diode and the discriminator detector diodes to respective outputs.

Abstract: A modified TO-8 package has a kovar header supporting an FET amplifier hermetically sealed by a cover welded along the seam between the cover edge and header edge. The header is formed with three circular openings in space quadrature about the package axis. A circular copper spacer contacts the header and is formed with channels extending radially outward from the header openings to define with the openings three lead channels. A lead having a right angle bend is seated in each channel having an upstanding pin portion above the header. The volume between the lead and the header is filled with hermetically sealing low expansion borosilicate glass. The remainder of each channel is filled or coated with nonconductive epoxy. The depending portions of the leads are flush with the bottom of the copper spacer.

Abstract: A solar heater has an outlet conduit above an inlet conduit intercoupling a solar heating chamber with the inside of a building through a window opening. In one form the solar collecting chamber is outside the building below the window and the outlet conduit and inlet conduit are contiguous and pass through the window opening between the windowsill and the lower sash. In another form of the invention the solar collecting chambers are located beside each side of the window and joined at the top by the outlet conduit that passes through an opening between the upper window sash and the top of the window frame and at the bottom by an inlet conduit that passes through an opening between the lower sash and the windowsill.
Abstract: An improved method and construction for positioning a plurality of socket terminals on an electrical circuit board in a predetermined configuration prior to the solder connection thereto. A sheet of electrically insulative, flexible, resinous plastic material is provided with a plurality of holes in an array conforming to the desired positioning of the sockets on the circuit boards. The socket terminals are provided with an enlarged generally cylindrical head including an intermediate groove such that the heads extend into the holes and are adapted for frictional snap engagement with the sheet. The sheet with the array of sockets temporarily held thereby is positioned on the circuit board which is then conventionally soldered so as to electrically and mechanically fix the sockets to the board. Thereafter, the sheet may be removed.
