  • Patent number: 4797207
Abstract: There is disclosed herein an apparatus and method for controlling a dual piston pump for a liquid chromatography system so as to pump a flow of solvent through the liquid chromatography column at a constant flow rate and with a solvent composition which is substantially equal to the desired solvent composition despite changing conditions of compressibility of the solvent. The control system uses a computer which measures the time it takes the pump shaft to move through an overlap region in the pump cycle when both pistons are simultaneously pumping as normalized to the time taken by the pump to move through a constant velocity portion of the piston travel defined by the user.

  • Patent number: 4797285
Abstract: A drug/liposome composition comprising an aqueous suspension of liposomes and, entrapped in the lipid bilayer region of the liposomes, an anthraquinone drug containing quinone and hydroquinone functionalities on adjacent anthracene rings. An iron-specific trihydroxamic chelating agent contained in the bulk aqueous phase of the suspension and a lipophilic free-radical scavenger contained in the bilayer region of the liposome cooperate to reduce chemical modification of both drug and lipid components of the composition. A preferred composition containing doxorubicin and alpha-tocopherol entrapped in the liposomes, and ferrioxamine in the aqueous suspension phase is effective in treating human neoplasms, with significantly reduced side effects over those produced by free-drug administration.

  • Patent number: 4797888
Abstract: A circuit for the preionization and main discharge of a pulsed gas laser provides that the sparks intended for the preionization of the working gas have an independent switch function. Capacitive energy storage means 7, 8, 9, 10 are connected low-inductively to the spark electrodes 3, 4, 5, 6. The current flowing in the spark discharge is used selectively for the preionization by means of the spark or for generating a compressed high-voltage pulse. The compressed high-voltage pulse is applied as prepulse to the main electrodes to momentarily greatly increase the voltage obtaining between the main electrodes and thus initiate and supply a homogeneous main discharge.

  • Patent number: 4791649
Abstract: A multilayered crystal structure in a semiconductor laser device contains an active layer for laser oscillation on a V-stripe channeled substrate having a current-blocking layer thereon. The active layer further includes regions by means of which carriers within the active layer are prevented from diffusing outside of the active layer. These regions are disposed facing each other with an optical waveguide therebetween which is formed by the absorption of light by the portions of the current-blocking layer which are positioned at both sides of the striped channel. The distance between the regions is narrower than the width of the optical waveguide in the vicinity of both facets and wider than the width of the optical waveguide inside of both facets.

  • Patent number: 4788309
Abstract: Si-N groups in silazanes (which may be siloxazanes) are cleaved in the presence of a suitable catalyst or one or more reactants containing an Si-H group and an N-H group (in the same molecule or in different molecules) are reacted in the presence of a suitable catalyst. New silazane products result including oligomers and polymers. Suitable catalysts include metal carbonyl complexes and heterogeneous metal catalysts such as platinum on carbon. Immediate products of reaction such as products containing Si-H and N-H groups resulting from Si-N cleavage and Si-N products resulting from Si-H+N-H reactions undergo further reaction, resulting in many cases in a mixture of oligomers or of oligomers and polymers. The initial reactants may be open chain or ring compounds containing Si-N or Si-H+N-H in an open chain or in a ring or as pendant groups.
