  • Patent number: 4786767
Abstract: An improved transparent touch panel membrane switch for use and shielding in front of a visual display terminal is disclosed. The switch is made up of a plurality of plastic sheets arrayed substantially parallel to one another in a sandwich configuration. The outermost of the sheets has an antireflective hardcoat. Two adjacent but spaced apart inner sheets provide the electrical contact through transparent low reflectance conductive metal coatings. The switch additionally contains a further inner antireflective transparent electrically conductive coating which provides shielding against the passage of electromagnetic and radio frequency interference through the membrane switch. The layers in this switch all contribute to a relatively low transmittance of back lighting from the visual display terminal but also significantly reduce reflectance such that the overall signal-to-noise ratio is substantially enhanced.

  • Patent number: 4784118
Abstract: An apparatus for viewing a region within a body cavity or the like. The apparatus includes an elongate light pipe having a distal end and a proximal end, which light pipe illuminates the region to be viewed adjacent the distal end of the pipe. An objective lens system is carried at that distal end which in a preferred embodiment forms a focused real image of the illuminated region. This image is transmitted to the viewer through a series of relay lenses and, at the proximal end of the apparatus, through a viewing lens system. The light pipe and the lenses are composed of a polymeric material such as styrene, polycarbonate, acrylic, or the like, and are preferably aspheric lenses.

  • Patent number: 4781871
Abstract: A method of preparing a concentrated liposome suspension having a lipid concentration of greater than about 250 .mu.m/ml and liposome sizes no greater than about 0.4 microns. A solution of vesicle-forming lipids in a chlorofluorocarbon solvent is injected under selected conditions into an aqueous medium, with continual solvent removal. During the lipid injection and solvent-removal steps, the liposomes formed in the aqueous medium are extruded through a membrane, to reduce liposome sizes to less than about 0.6 microns. The lipid injection, solvent removal, and extrusion steps are continued until a lipid concentration of at least about 150 .mu.m/ml is reached.

  • Patent number: 4779579
Abstract: A bank of piston and cylinder assemblies is formed in a cylinder block and is mounted for rotation within bearings. The piston rods are operatively connected to the pistons and bearing supports on an angled plate journalled for rotation at one end of the block and shafts extend axially from the block and the plate and are connected together by a universal joint for rotation as a unit. A centrally located fuel/air chamber is formed axially through the block and fuel/air compression and vaporizing fans rotate with the chamber as the block rotates and feeds fuel/air mixtures through inlet ports to the cylinders successively as the pistons uncover the inlet ports. An exhaust ring surrounds the block and is adjustable radially and exhaust ports from the cylinders coincide with an exhaust outlet in the ring also successively. The engine operates on the two stroke principle, each cylinder firing every 360.degree. of rotation but splash lubrication is provided thus eliminating fuel/oil mixture.

  • Patent number: 4779780
Abstract: Conventional film wrap dispensers have an exit slot adjacent the cutting blade so that the film end is difficult to grasp and pull out of the dispenser. The present device has a dispensing slot in the base adjacent the rear thereof and spaced from the cutter blade so that there is a two or three inch strip of plastic film extending from the slot after the previous length has been detached by said cutter blade. Furthermore, the transverse portion between the dispensing slot and the cutter blade is formed from a material which inhibits the usual adhesion of the plastic film so that the strip of plastic film extending from the dispenser slot normally hangs downwardly clear of the dispenser and does not adhere to the portion of the base between the slot and the blade as is usual. Even if some light adhesion does take place, the strip is easily detached so that it may be grasped easily for withdrawal, remote from the cut-off blade.

  • Patent number: 4777245
Abstract: A stable trioma cell line capable of secreting a non-human primate monoclonal antibody specific against a selected antigen. An exemplary cell line secretes chimpanzee monoclonal antibody specific against an antigen associated with hepatitis nonA/nonB infection. The cell line is produced, in the method of the invention, by isolating lymphocytes from a primate immunized with the selected antigen, and immortalizing the lymphocytes by fusion with a stable, non-antibody-secreting murine myeloma/human hybridoma cell line having selected-for human characteristics. The trioma fusion products are selected for secretion of the desired antibody, which has a variety of diagnostic and/or therapeutic uses.

  • Patent number: 4775619
Abstract: Methods for diagnosis employing polynucleotides having oligonucleotide sequences substantially homologous to a sequence of interest, where the presence or absence of hybridization at a predetermined stringency provides for the release of a label from a support. Particularly, various techniques are employed for binding a label to a support, whereupon cleavage of either a single or double strand, a label may be released from a support, where the release of the label can be detected as indicative of the presence of a particular oligonucleotide sequence in a sample. The method finds use in diagnosis of disease, genetic monitoring, and analyzing nucleic acid mixtures.

  • Patent number: 4774228
Abstract: Two proteins that are found in bone and that have in vivo chondrogenic/osteogenic activity in combination with a co-factor are described. Both proteins also were active in combination with EGF in the in vitro TGF-.beta. assay. Each has a molecular weight of approximately 26,000 daltons by SDS-PAGE. Each is reduced to a single polypeptide indicating that the proteins are probably homodimers. One has an N-terminal sequence identical to that of human placenta-derived TGF-.beta. whereas the other has an N-terminal sequence that is different from that of TGF-.beta. derived from human placenta. The two proteins may be purified to homogeneity using RP-HPLC or acetic acid-urea gel electrophoresis.
