  • Patent number: 6602059
Abstract: The present invention provides an electrical submersible pump assembly having a submersible pump, a submersible electrical motor drivingly connected to the pump, and a seal assembly disposed between the submersible pump and the motor. The seal assembly is generally of tubular construction and provides fluid communication between the seal assembly cavity and the motor, such fluid communication being in a circuitous path effecting gravity segregation of contaminants including particulate solids in wellbore fluids. The seal assembly thereby controls and minimizes migration of the contaminants into the body of the seal section and on into the motor.

  • Patent number: 6480299
Abstract: A color management method/apparatus generates image color matching and International Color Consortium (ICC) color printer profiles using a reduced number of color patch measurements. Color printer characterization, and the generation of ICC profiles usually require a large number of measured data points or color patches and complex interpolation techniques. This invention provides an optimization method/apparatus for performing LAB to CMYK color space conversion, gamut mapping, and gray component replacement. A gamut trained network architecture performs LAB to CMYK color space conversion to generate a color profile lookup table for a color printer, or alternatively, to directly control the color printer in accordance with the a plurality of color patches that accurately. represent the gamut of the color printer.

  • Patent number: 6468058
Abstract: A system for pumping fluid from a well-bore that includes a pump assembly driven by a first motor module assembly via a continuous rotatable shaft. The first motor module assembly includes an induction motor having a multi-phase stator and a wound rotor. Energizing the stator of the induction motor of the first motor module induces a current in the windings of the wound rotor of the induction motor of the first motor module. The induced current is supplied to a motor coupling unit which generates power to drive a second motor module assembly electrically connected to the motor coupling unit. The second motor module assembly further drives the pump assembly via the continuous rotatable shaft.

  • Patent number: 6469863
Abstract: Apparatus and method for improved servo control in a disc drive. The disc drive includes a rotatable disc, a moveable actuator which supports a head adjacent the disc, and a stationary active magnetic bearing assembly which uses bearing coils to levitate the actuator. An active magnetic bearing control circuit applies currents to the bearing coils, and a servo control circuit applies current to an actuator motor to position the head with respect to the disc. The active magnetic bearing control circuit outputs a disturbance signal when a disturbance affects the relative positioning of the actuator and the bearing assembly, and this disturbance signal is fed forward into the servo control circuit. Conversely, the servo control circuit provides a seek expectancy signal to the bearing control circuit to enable the bearing control circuit to compensate for torque forces applied by the actuator motor.

  • Patent number: 6462902
Abstract: Apparatus and method for individually clamping discs in a disc stack assembly to improve mechanical shock resistance of a disc drive. A clamping spacer includes a circumferentially extending body portion having a hub contact surface rigidly affixable to a hub of a spindle motor used to rotate first and second discs. The clamping spacer further includes top and bottom spring flanges which extend radially from the body portion away from the spindle motor hub so that the body portion and the spring flanges form a generally c-shaped cross-section. When the body portion is affixed to the spindle motor hub above the first disc and below the second disc, the bottom spring flange exerts a first axially directed clamping force upon the first disc and the top spring flange independently exerts a second axially directed clamping force upon the second disc.

  • Patent number: 6456452
Abstract: Method and apparatus for reducing repeatable runout signals in a servo position error (SPE) signal of a disc drive actuator. During track following, a measurement estimate is obtained through the sampling and accumulating of data from the SPE over a mechanical revolution of the drive, the measurement estimate providing a characterization of the repeatable runout signal in the servo position error signal. A correction estimate is updated by the measurement estimate, and the correction estimate is added to the servo position error signal to provide an adjusted servo position error signal. The disc drive uses the adjusted servo position error signal to generate a correction signal for adjusting the position of the actuator. The measurement estimate is reset after each update of the correction estimate and a new measurement estimate is generated during each subsequent rotation of the disc drive during track following mode.

  • Patent number: 6450782
Abstract: A pump-motor assembly having a base, a horizontal pump, a pump bracket to attach the pump to the base, a motor to energize the pump and a motor mount with a motor table and a motor platform to support and position the motor. The motor platform has a standard hole pattern for fasteners connecting the motor platform to the motor table. • Patent number: 6449117
Abstract: Apparatus and method for reducing the generation of acoustic noise in a disc drive. A seek is carried out to move a head from an initial track to a destination track on a corresponding disc surface using a servo circuit which outputs a series of current command values indicative of successive magnitudes of current to be applied to an actuator motor. A velocity profile provides a sequence of demand velocities indicative of the desired velocity at each of a succession of time periods during the seek. Closed loop velocity control is achieved by comparing the actual velocity of the head to the corresponding demand velocity and adjusting the current in relation to the velocity error therebetween. During initial stages of the seek, however, open loop control is initially performed using a current profile table which shapes the initial stages of current to a desired waveform, irrespective of the velocity profile and the velocity error.

  • Patent number: 6449120
Abstract: Apparatus for reducing bearing contaminant migration from a cartridge bearing assembly of a hard disc drive actuator assembly. The cartridge bearing assembly includes a stationary shaft, a bearing assembly and a cartridge bearing sleeve. The bearing assembly is disposed between and rigidly affixed to the stationary shaft and the cartridge bearing sleeve so as to facilitate radial movement of the cartridge bearing sleeve relative to the stationary shaft. A retention disc is rigidly affixed to a portion of the cartridge bearing sleeve adjacent the bearing assembly to form a retention chamber adjacent the bearing assembly to minimize the migration of contaminants from the bearing assembly to the interior of the disc drive. Adhesive is used to bond the retention disc to the cartridge bearing sleeve, the adhesive providing additional sealing against the passage of contaminants between the retention disc and the cartridge bearing sleeve.

  • Patent number: 6445525
Abstract: Method and apparatus for improving disc drive performance by reducing areal data storage density while maintaining data storage capacity. A total user data storage capacity is selected for a disc recording surface. A total number of user data fields is selected to meet the data storage capacity. The data fields are distributed among a plurality of concentric zones, each zone having a plurality of data tracks, each data track in each zone having a common number of data fields written at a first write frequency. The zones are defined in relation to a data density profile defining a desired data density relationship across the disc recording surface. A final write frequency is selected for each zone equal to or less than the first write frequency that will achieve the selected data storage capacity of each track in said zone, thereby reducing data density of at least selected tracks.

  • Patent number: 6445530
Abstract: An apparatus and method for supplying bi-directional load current to a load device. Four current sensing metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors are operably configured to form an H-bridge with the load device, each transistor having separately insulated gate, source and drain and sense terminals with a source to drain conductivity determined in relation to a voltage applied to the gate terminal and a sense current from the sense terminal determined in relation to a magnitude of source to drain current. Drive voltages are applied to the gate terminals of alternating pairs of the transistors to apply the load current to the load device. The sense currents are used to provide adaptive, closed-loop clamping of the drive voltages at levels sufficient to maintain the non-load current conducting transistors in a quiescent state.

  • Patent number: 6424487
Abstract: An energy absorbing disc travel limiter which not only mechanically defines a limit to the extent to which a disc in a disc drive can be axially displaced in response to applied mechanical shocks, but which also acts to damp the shock-induced motion of the discs, thus preventing contact between the discs and the actuator head mounting arms. The amount of damping provided by the disc travel limiter is determined by selection of the material of the disc travel limiter and selection of certain dimensions of the disc travel limiter.
