  • Patent number: 5907204
Abstract: In a starter, a power supply terminal connected to a solenoid coil of a magnet switch and connectable to a starter external circuit is provided on an end cover. The power supply terminal includes a terminal metal member, a bimetal which interrupts electric conduction between the solenoid coil and the terminal metal member at the time of temperature rise above a predetermined temperature, and a casing contacting a foot part of the terminal metal member and encasing the bimetal therein. The bimetal responds to each of the excessive heating of the terminal metal member and excessive energization current to interrupt the conduction. In case of a single axis-type starter, the power supply terminal is provided on a recess so that the terminal metal member does not extend axially beyond the rear end face of the end cover.

  • Patent number: 5902941
Abstract: A vehicle closure testing apparatus for opening or closing a vehicle door of any of a variety of vehicles under test includes a supporting structure, a door moving mechanism, and an assembly selectably configured to position the door moving structure. The supporting structure positions the vehicle closure testing apparatus in spaced relationship to the vehicle under test. The door moving mechanism engages and rotates the vehicle door when the door moving mechanism is activated. The assembly enables the door moving mechanism to be movably positioned into a functional position relative to a specific door of the variety of vehicle doors having a specific axis of rotation and enables the door moving mechanism to be re-positioned in a similar functional position relative to a different vehicle door having a different axis of rotation.

  • Patent number: 5897560
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a centered bore within an intramedullary canal of a femur in preparation for the implantation of a prosthetic device. The apparatus comprises a substantially T-shaped device formed from a handle and an elongated rigid rod. The rod includes outwardly projecting fins at its distal end adapted to engage the interior wall of the cortex of the femur, thus centering the bore. The method includes preparing the femur for implantation by exposing the femoral neck and then inserting the rod into the intramedullary canal until the fins engage the cortex. If a device has a pair of fins disposed on the rod at 180.degree. relative to one another, the device is withdrawn, rotated ninety degrees, and reinserted into the intramedullary canal, again allowing the fins to engage the cortex. Once the bore is formed, it is used to guide compacting devices which shape and size a cavity within the femur to receive the prosthesis.

  • Patent number: 5887588
Abstract: A method for analyzing human brain physiology and pathology according to metabolic data obtained by non-invasive means. Metabolism is detected using in vivo proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (.sup.1 H MRS) using pulse sequences that provide nuclear magnetic resonance signals from a living human brain. Factors which might decrease performance of artificial neuronal network analysis, e.g. the residual water signal, are eliminated from the nuclear magnetic resonance signal, e.g., by means of a singular value decomposition algorithm. Moreover, the artificial neuronal network analysis accepts as input all of the metabolite resonances, not just selected features, for analysis. The artificial neuronal network analysis yields metabolite concentrations and the nature of tissue type in focal lesions, such as tumors, stroke lesions, epileptic foci, traumatic scars, and also in more diffuse pathologies such as metabolic brain disorders as well as in post-therapeutic changes.

  • Patent number: 5887859
Abstract: An entire outer periphery of an axially central portion of an inner cylindrical member is expanded outwardly to define an expanding portion having a spherical configuration of which a center locates about an axial line of the inner cylindrical member. A cylindrical internal ring is disposed in about the middle between an outer cylindrical member and the inner cylindrical member coaxially and an axially central portion of the internal ring bends in conformity with the expanding portion of the inner cylindrical member. By virtue of the expanding portion and internal ring, the rigidity in the directions perpendicular to the axial direction increases.

  • Patent number: 5887686
Abstract: A device for suppressing brake noise wherein a rod is provided upright on the inside of the rim to which the brake lining is fitted, and a weight is fitted to this rod by way of an elastic body. By fitting a weight to the brake shoe by way of an intermediary elastic body, the weight will vibrate when it is subject to the vibration of the brake shoe. At low frequencies the vibration of the weight will be in phase with the vibration of the brake shoe, but as the vibration frequency of the brake shoe increases, the vibration of the weight will shift out of phase with the vibration of the brake shoe. In the vicinity of and above a certain frequency, this phase difference will become nearly 180 degrees. By matching this frequency to the brake noise frequency, the vibration of the brake shoe can be suppressed by the vibration of the weight.

  • Patent number: 5883733
Abstract: An apparatus for minimizing vibration of images in video cameras due to vibration of the operator's hands includes a motion detector, an electric field generator which receives information from the motion detector and generate voltages related to the horizontal and vertical motions, and a hand vibration corrector which uses the voltages from the electric field generator to control the refractive index of a medium through which the incoming video images are passing, to thereby adjust the position of the incoming images. A CCD converts the optical signals of the hand vibration correcting means into electrical signals. The refractive index of the crystal having the electro-optical effect is controlled by electrical signals and the optical source of the input images is optically corrected. Consequently, a high speed response and high precision controlled resolution are provided. Further, the apparatus has a simple structure, and therefore, it can greatly contribute to the camera image stabilization.

  • Patent number: 5879793
Abstract: A mineral wool article including a mineral wool layer, at least a region of which extends from at least one surface of the mineral wool layer into the mineral wool layer to an impregnation depth t. The region of the mineral wool layer includes individual fibers and is impregnated with an impregnating substance which adheres to the fibers and encloses the fibers without sealing gaps defined between the fibers so as to permit the surface of the mineral wool layer to retain an open surface structure. The gaps between the fibers in the region include bridge formations of the impregnating substance, which bridge formations are configured to permit air to penetrate through the mineral wool layer without essentially being impeded and to trap solid particles and thereby prevent emergence of the particles from the surface of the mineral wool layer. The impregnating substance provides the article with a soft and warm touch.
