Abstract: Novel vehicles for printing inks are thermoplastic alcohol-soluble low molecular weight poly(amide-ester) resins that are prepared by a two-step process from a dimerized fatty acid, a polyamine, and a bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin epoxy resin.

Abstract: Low molecular weight, 100-percent solids polyesters, which are useful in printing inks and overprint coatings, are made by the reaction of a polyol, a monobasic aliphatic carboxylic acid, rosin or modified-rosin acid, and a polycarboxylic acid or anhydride.
Abstract: A photocomposer includes a fixed rearwardly inclined backboard for supporting a sensitized lithographic plate. To substantially reduce the weight of the backboard and its supporting structure, the main portion of the backboard is of cellular construction. Depressible register pins for positioning the lithographic plate are mounted on the backboard. Each pin is part of an assembly constructed to readily permit transverse adjustment of the pins.

Abstract: Paper coating compositions contain at least one pigment, at least one binder, and as an insolubilizer for the binder an alkylated product of the reaction of glyoxal and a cyclic urea.
Abstract: A takeoff and restacking device is operated in coordination with printing apparatus that applies decorations to the outside of cup-like containers. The apparatus includes a plurality of container holding mandrels extending radially from a turret which moves in angular steps between stations spaced by a distance equal to the space between adjacent mandrels. At one of these stations (takeoff station) a bellows-type suction head mounted on a support arm of the device engages a decorated container and carries it to a stacking region where the container is added to a stack at the rear thereof. The support arm is pivotally mounted to a drive arm on a movable pivot located at one end of the drive arm and intermediate the ends of the support arm. The end of the drive arm remote from the movable pivot is mounted to a fixed pivot about which the drive arm oscillates.

Abstract: A takeoff-delivery mechanism for cup-like containers is provided with a pusher device that is operated repeatedly to remove stacks containing a predetermined number of containers from the front of a horizontal supply stack while containers are being fed to the rear thereof. Initially, each removed stack is fed to a horizontal delivery device which is then pivoted by moving its front end upward until the delivery device is generally vertical. The removed stack is discharged from the delivery device through the now downwardly facing rear thereof into a receiving device where the removed stack remains generally vertical.

Abstract: Blends of a glyoxal/cyclic urea condensate or a partially or wholly alkylated derivative thereof and dimethylol dihydroxyethylene urea or a partially or wholly alkylated derivative thereof improve the properties of textile fabrics treated therewith and contain only small amounts of free formaldehyde.
Abstract: A probe-like, vibration-resistant fast-heating electrical heater assembly for use in a pollution sensor of an exhaust monitoring system for internal combustion engines, which comprises an elongate metal tube having concentrically disposed therein a metal conductor rod which is insulated from the tube. At one pair of corresponding ends, the tube and rod carry a ceramic coil form having an open winding on it comprising a helical resistance coil that is disposed in a helical groove of the coil form. Ceramic cement is utilized to secure the coil form in place, and also to mount the conductor rod in the conductor tube whereby a rigid, vibration-resistant assemblage is had that can also withstand high temperatures. The conductor tube is carried in a terminal post that has an annular flange at one end for the purpose of mounting the heater assembly in the associated equipment.
Abstract: Inker apparatus constructed primarily for the application of high viscosity paste-type ink includes an anilox fountain roll which partially defines an ink trough. The latter is also partially defined by a scraper blade disposed downstream of a wiper blade which forces ink into the cells of the anilox roll. The free edge of the scraper blade is disposed adjacent the cylindrical surface of the anilox roll to meter the quantity of ink which is removed from the trough by the anilox roll. Two distributor rolls are used to transfer ink from the anilox roll to a plate cylinder. One of the distributor rolls engages the image plate on the plate cylinder and the other distributor roll engages the anilox roll. The latter distributor roll is oscillated axially so that the cellular pattern of the anilox roll will not be transferred to the first mentioned distributor roll.
Abstract: An elongated high intensity lamp which serves as a line-type of light source is placed at the focus of a generally shaped parabolic reflector which extends longitudinally with the light source. The reflector surface closest to the lamp is inwardly deformed toward the light source. The inwardly deformed section may itself be a concavely shaped parabolic or arcuate region; or inwardly angled flat sections; or a flat region extending squarely across the top of the reflector. The distortion of the parabolic reflector shape produces a more uniform intensity distribution across the area being illuminated by the lamp and the reflector. A plurality of parallel line-type sources are also disclosed.
Abstract: An electric cigar lighter for automobiles and the like, comprising a holder device presenting an outwardly facing socket, and an ignitor plug receivable in the socket. The plug comprises a manually operable part, and carries a heating element which is electrically connected in circuit with a normally-closed heat-responsive switch that is disposed in the holder device. The socket, in addition to its grounding circuit, has a "hot" contact which is engageable with a cooperable contact on the plug to effect the circuit through the heating element when the manually operable part is depressed. The holder device also carries a bimetallic member which is engageable with one of the parts of the switch. The member normally occupies a closed-circuit position wherein it is separated from the one switch part.
Abstract: An oven for curing ultraviolet curable ink on cylindrical objects consists of an assembly of two pairs of elongated ultraviolet lamps with respective reflectors for directing the radiation of the respective pairs of lamps toward the path taken by the objects to be cooled. The assembly is rotatable to move either of the pair of lamps into operative curing position and to enable maintenance on the other two lamps or the lamp power supplies at a convenient time as when other maintenance is required rather than force immediate shutdown of the decorating/printing and curing line. Air flow paths are provided to cool the lamps and reflectors during high power operation and to enable the lamp to stay hot during low power operation. A plurality of spindles which carry the cans to be cured are fixed on the pins of a pin chain and move over a wire brush type rack to cause the spindles and then the cans on the spindles to rotate as they move under and along the length of the lamps.
