  • Patent number: 4444263
Abstract: A permanent thermal packer is disclosed for sealing the annulus between an injection tubing string and a well casing. The packer is thermal cement and is placed from within the injection tubing string to seal a substantial portion of the annulus above the injection zone. The packer provides a means for sealing the annulus above the injection zone thus permitting insulating material to be placed in the annulus above the packer with the expectation that it will not be damaged by well bore fluids.

  • Patent number: 4443229
Abstract: A coal gasification process is disclosed wherein two portions of heat transfer material are introduced into the reaction vessel at different locations and different temperatures. Steam is passed upwardly through the vessel to react with the carbonaceous material to form a hot char and a gaseous product, wherein the heat necessary for the coal gasification reaction is supplied by both the first portion of heat transfer material and the second portion of heat transfer material. Then the hot char and gaseous product are cooled by contact with the first portion of heat transfer material.

  • Patent number: 4440623
Abstract: Heat transfer particles of fluidizable size are selected for recycling to the pyrolysis zone to broaden usable size range of oil shale feed. These recycle particles should all be of a fluidizable size and when mixed with the raw oil shale the total amount of fluidizable particles should comprise not less than about 60 weight percent of the particles in the mixture. This process is especially useful when the heat transfer material is recycled oil shale particles. The present invention is particularly advantageous when the oil shale is pyrolyzed in a vertical retorting vessel containing a fluidized bed above a packed bed of particles.
