  • Patent number: 4812087
Abstract: An end milling tool having a positive axial rake angle in side elevation to facilitate removal of chips from the surface of a workpiece and a curved cutting edge having a neutral (zero) to positive rake angle in bottom plan view as it progressively cuts to enhance chip removal while precluding welding at the work area and enabling the use of a low cutting force. The tool cutting area is formed by a rhomboid-shaped indexable cutting insert at one end having an angular axial rake with a unique curved surface in side elevation provided with a lead corner and a strong included angle in an end elevational view. Other inserts are mounted on the tool above the rhomboid insert to form the remainder of the cutting area and are circular in side elevational view. Each of the rhomboid and circular inserts are mounted in an insert seat having at least one pair of flat side surfaces in abutting relationship with compatible surfaces in the pocket to obtain maximum rigidity in seating and prevent rotation of the insert.

  • Patent number: 4804314
Abstract: A magnetostrictive hydraulic injector pump having a cylinder closed at one end with an elongated piston arranged within the cylinder from the other end. The piston is constructed of a magnetostrictive material which increases in length in the presence of a magnetic field of appropriate intensity. It is wound along its length with a coil of wire capable of producing an electro-magnetic field. The piston includes an intake passage communicating with a fluid supply. The piston is fastened at the open end of the cylinder to define a cylinder cavity between the cylinder closed end and the piston. An injector passage including a valve, communicates with this cavity to the exterior. The volume of this cavity is reduced when the piston expands under the influence of the magnetic field created by the coil to produce a pressure on any fluid contained within said cavity to force it out the injector passage.

  • Patent number: 4804301
Abstract: Central drawbar operated tooling connection system wherein a pair of wedges are positively driven laterally outward and retracted by reciprocation of a central drawbar. Mechanical advantage of a key slot between drawbar and wedges plus mechanical advantage of the wedge angle amplifies a drawbar force for producing axial loading in the order of 5:1. Alternative forms of drawbar actuation such as by screw thread feed, preloaded spring with hydraulic release are optional.

Abstract: A hydraulic pump having a cylinder closed at one end with an elongated piston arranged within the cylinder from the other end. The piston is constructed of a positive magnetostrictive material which increases in length in the presence of a magnetic field of appropriate intensity. It is wound along its length with a coil of wire capable of producing an electro-magnetic field upon energization. The piston is fastened at the open end of the cylinder to define a cylinder cavity between the cylinder closed end and the piston. A pair of passages including valves, for use as an intake and an exhaust passage, settable as required, communicate with this cavity. The valve members in each cavity comprises a magnetically polarized member, each of opposed polarity as related to the other, such that upon energization of the pump with one polarity of pulses, the valves will assume a particular function, and with a reversed polarity of operating pulses, a reverse function.

  • Patent number: 4780029
Abstract: A tool holder for a numerically controlled machine tool, in which a cutting edge provided on a base member is adjustable with respect to a reference surface on the base member by adjustment means. The adjustment means comprise a U-shaped slot in the base member. This slot serves to form a pair of lever portions in the material of the base member, which lever portions are connected to each other by an area of the base member serving as a pivot. An adjustment screw threadingly engaging the base member acts upon the free end of one of said lever portions such that upon an adjusting movement of the adjustment screw the first lever portion is deflected in a predetermined direction to thereby deflect the second lever portion of the opposite direction. The second lever portion transmits its movement to the cutting edge by means of a spacing member disposed in the slot (FIG. 1).

  • Patent number: 4618296
Abstract: A cutting tool, for example a milling cutter, capable of omini-directional machining of a workpiece as disclosed. In a preferred form, the cutting tool is embodied as a ball nosed end mill having a cylindrical shank terminating in a spherically shaped cutting end with recesses shaped for receipt of at least two indexable cutting inserts, each insert mounted in lay-down fashion, and providing a portion of an effective overall arcuate cutting edge, the cutting zones of each insert overlapping each other. Each insert has the form of an equilateral polygon bounded by planar flanks, each flank intersecting a convex portion of a major face of an insert to form an arcuate cutting edge. The convex major face portion forms the clearance face and the planar flank portion the rake face for each associated arcuate cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 4573824
Abstract: Apparatus for rigidly coupling a first member to a second member along a longitudinal axis is disclosed wherein one of the members carries a pair of wedges coupled to opposite threaded ends of a differential screw. The other one of the two members includes a reaction surface confronting wedging surfaces on each of the two wedges. Upon rotation of the differential screw, the wedges are moved in opposite directions to bear against the reaction surface with substantially a surface area contact to force the first and second member into rigidly coupled engagement. Upon rotation of the differential screw in an opposite direction, the wedges are positively moved in reverse opposite directions to effect uncoupling.
