  • Patent number: 4201903
Abstract: The invention comprises a method for manufacturing a load-bearing structural element, and a housing for such manufacture. The method includes positioning outer shell assemblies in the housing to form a hollow space, and positioning honeycomb plates and a central support assembly within the outer shells. The outer shell assemblies are thereafter forced toward each other whereby the edges of the plates are firmly pressed against the adjacent surfaces of the assemblies. The plates and shell assemblies are rigidly interconnected by welding, with the atmospheric conditions in the hollow space being controlled as desired. The housing includes means to initially space the components in the housing prior to pressing and welding.

  • Patent number: 4200403
Abstract: A writing implement having a body formed by a pair of leaves each having a longitudinally extending bore therein, with the bores in the two leaves coaxial and the two leaves interengaged in the manner of a hinge, and a writing member, such as a pencil lead or ball-point pen with an ink reservoir, extending through the coaxial bores in the two members, the two leaves being relatively pivotable about the axis of the coaxial bores therein between a storage configuration in which the leaves lie substantially in the same plane and a writing configuration in which the planes of the two leaves are at an acute angle to one another. The writing member is preferably secured to an axially movable plunger in the coaxial bores, which plunger has grooves co-operating with projections from the leaves such that a writing tip of the writing member is caused to project from one end of the leaves upon movement of the leaves from the storage to the writing configuration.

  • Patent number: 4197268
Abstract: A control device connected to rotational speed measuring means for an extruder screw, to a filling level monitor in a degassing opening of the extruder, to a cut-off in a filling container for the extruder, to vacuum means connected to the degassing opening and to a source of gas under pressure such that upon receipt from the speed measuring means or the filling level monitor by the control device of an indication of probable filling of the degassing opening with melt, the control device closes the cut-off, disconnects the vacuum means from the degassing opening and connects the gas pressure source thereto.

  • Patent number: 4194344
Abstract: In a sugar cane harvester of the type having a conveyor to carry the cane stalks, butt ends first, from a base cutter which severs the cane near ground level to a chopping cutter which cuts the stalks into billets, the conveyor consists of a series of transverse upper feed rollers and a series of oppositely rotated lower feed rollers, the cane being fed between the upper and lower feed rollers. Between succeeding lower feed rollers there are provided transverse cleaning rollers, driven in opposite direction to the lower feed rollers, and with radiating members which are adapted to catch and tear away leafy matter from the cane being conveyed.

  • Patent number: 4192617
Abstract: A screw extruder for processing rubber or plastics material, comprising a cylinder jacket with a feed hopper, a central geared shaft and geared planet shafts disposed between the central shaft and the cylinder jacket and drivably engaged with the central shaft and the cylinder jacket, wherein parts of at least some of the planet shafts are bare of gearing.Advantageously each alternate planet shaft is only partly geared, the gearing extending for only approximately half the length of the shaft, at one end or the other end or in two quarter length portions at the opposite ends. Alternatively each third planet shaft is only partly geared.Preferably each geared part of a planet shaft which is only partly geared overlaps with a geared part of the planet shaft which follows it in the direction of rotation.

  • Patent number: 4187177
Abstract: In a column for high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) having a tube filled with sorbent for the passage of a solvent medium and samples to be analyzed, and a pressure jacket concentrically surrounding said tube, so that an annular interspace is provided which is filled with the solvent medium fed under pressure and in which the pressure can be equal or higher to the pressure within the internal tube, both ends of the interspace are sealed by means of packings surrounding the internal tube like stuffing boxes, and the ends of the internal tube are provided with perforated stoppers, which extend with a stud-like elongation into the internal tube to the region which is surrounded by the respective packing, so that the elongation support the wall of the internal tube against the sealing pressure of the packings. Accordingly, the internal tube can be a thin-walled glass column or even a hose of flexible plastics.
