  • Patent number: 4810256
Abstract: Fuel articles having a covering layer thereover, wherein the covering layer serves as an ignition material for the underlying fuel element, and may be spaced from the underlying fuel element. Preferred fuel articles have charcoal compositions in the underlying fuel element and the covering layer is fibrous. The covering layer may be spaced from the fuel element by means of bridging concavities in the fuel element itself, by providing intermediate spacing elements within a concavity of the fuel element, or by providing a spacing material between the fuel element and the covering layer, not necessarily at a location of concavity in the fuel element. The covering layer may have a variety of compositions, and may be overlain by one or more additional layers. The invention further provides methods of manufacturing the fuel articles disclosed as well as methods of using them.

  • Patent number: 4756949
Abstract: In accordance with the invention, compositions of matter are provided for forming visco-elastic materials to simulate the physical feel of natural human soft tissue, such as fat or breast tissue. The compositions preferred are formed from a major portion of plasticizer and a minor portion of a resin. In a preferred embodiment, about 1100 parts by weight of a dialkyl phthalate plasticizer are thoroughly mixed with about 100 parts by weight of a polyvinyl chloride resin at an elevated temperature to form the visco-elastic material of the present invention. Included in the preferred composition are minor amounts of an epoxidized soybean oil stabilizer and a metallic salt stabilizer. A method is provided for producing visco-elastic materials and for producing pad structures comprising, preferably, an outer unattached covering of an elastic closed cell neoprene material and a core of said visco-elastic material.

  • Patent number: 4743242
Abstract: The invention relates to a system for fastening refastenable garment such as diaper or incontinent garment in which a tape and polymer backing material for the garment are provided such that tape may be removed after refastening to the diaper without tearing of the polymer material. The system of the invention utilizes a polypropylene tape material that is embossed on the outer surface and smooth on the adhesive-carrying surface. The adhesive on the tape is a semihard adhesive that provides high adhesion values to the polymer that nevertheless may be peeled free for removal of the tape and subsequent refastening. The polymer forming the outer backing if the diaper is a relatively thick, embossed polymer sheet. In the refastenable system of the invention the strength and adherence of the tape to the strong, embossed polymer backing sheet is controlled so as to achieve secure fastening with release of the adhesive from the embossed sheet without tearing.

  • Patent number: 4743237
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus to wrap a filler material with a porous gauze and attach a handling cord. The gauze material is thermoplastic and is heat sealed around the filler material. A string is then pierced through the gauze wrapping in a location exterior to the filler. The sides of the wrapping are then brought together surrounding the pierced string or cord to fuse the cord to the wrapping gauze. In a preferred form, the filler material is an absorbent for a tampon. After the fusing of the tampon withdrawal cord to the wrapping material, the tampon is compressed to the size conventionally utilized for a tampon and may be utilized either in a digital or applicator-type tampon.

  • Patent number: 4739910
Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for inverting a child's training pant or the like. The apparatus generally comprises a pair of mutually facing, diverging conveyor belt assemblies and a pair of suction systems respectively associated with the conveyor belt assemblies. As the conveyor belt assemblies move the training pant therealong, the suction systems act on opposite surfaces of the training pant to draw them apart, thereby opening the training pant. At the end of the conveyor belt assemblies is an inverting assembly for inverting the opened pant.

  • Patent number: 4726873
Abstract: This invention is generally accomplished by providing continuous self-adhesive strands of elastic to a substrate having retractable supports extending therefrom. The retractable supports in a convex pattern are contracted with the self-adhering elastic and the substrate bearing the elastic and supports is brought into contact with the web to which the elastic is to be transferred. The series of supports around which the elastic contacts are forced to retract as the self-adhering elastic is pressed against the web causing the elastic to transfer to the substrate thereby creating an elastic band on the substrate. In a preferred form the substrate is fed two strips of self-adhering elastic that are applied on each side of a series of a convex pattern of pins and then pressed together around opposing sides of the convex pattern of pins to seal the elastic to itself and sever the elastic, creating a contoured closed loop around the pins.

  • Patent number: 4726876
Abstract: Apparatus for changing the spacing between articles of a moving array of discrete articles includes transfer means mounted for orbiting along a closed orbital path passing through a receiving zone and a discharge zone. The orbital radius of the transfer means is adjustable to provide an orbital radius in the discharge zone which is different from that in the receiving zone. The transfer means are maintained in fixed, equal angular distances between them along the orbital path whereby the orbital path distance between adjacent transfer means is different in the discharge zone from that in the receiving zone thereby resulting in a different spacing between adjacent articles in the discharge zone from that in the receiving zone. Two or more orbital spacer means may be utilized in tandem to provide the change in spacing in stages.

  • Patent number: 4725473
Abstract: The cloth-like, liquid impervious composite material is made by applying a nonwoven layer of loose, unadhered fibers to a liquid impervious film, and then point-bonding the nonwoven layer to the liquid impervious film to form discrete points of adhesion between the fibers and film. Because the fibers in the nonwoven layer are loose and unadhered when applied to the film, the resulting composite material has improved loft and softness. Also, when the composite material is elasticized by an elastic material, it gathers into a more pleasing appearance.

  • Patent number: 4723322
Abstract: A knee pad for use on a supporting surface, and not attached to a person's knee, to provide support and cushioning to a person's knee. The pad has a lower region having a bottom for contacting the supporting surface, and a contoured upper region for contacting the front portion of the person's knee. The bottom has a frictional surface to resist sliding with respect to the supporting surface. Various properties of the upper region, relating to its contours and fitting with respect to the knee, are disclosed, particularly a concavity in the top of the pad. The concavity may be vacant. The top of the concavity may adjoin the top of the pad. The concavity may have a secondary inner concavity perimeter. The pad may have a plurality of outer perimeters, defining decreasing areas within the perimeters, from bottom to top of the pad.

  • Patent number: 4724114
Abstract: The invention generally provides for formation of meltblown material containing wood fiber on to a continuous foraminous belt. During formation a polymer and wood fiber first layer is applied to a moving belt from at least one bank of meltblown forming apparatus. This first layer does not contain superabsorbent. The belt carrying the first layer passes beneath at least one further source of meltblown fiber into which superabsorbent is added along with the wood fibers. This provides at least one additional layer integrally connected to the first-formed layer and having superabsorbent properties. The first layer acts to aid in trapping of any superabsorbent which is not immediately entangled in the meltblown and wood fibers and prevents it passing through the forming belt.

  • Patent number: 4715918
Abstract: The invention is generally accomplished by providing a roll having cavities suitable for retaining small quantities of particulate material. The roll further is adapted to be rotated such that the particulate material is deposited onto a web in discrete areas. These areas correspond to the depressions on the roll. The apparatus and method of the invention further provides in its preferred form a roll applicator device for adhesive having a series of lands and valleys wherein the lands correspond to the areas between the discrete particulate material. The applicator roll provides adhesive on the land areas that is transferred to a web of material which is brought into contact with the substrate bearing the discrete deposits of particulate material and sealed thereto. There is thereby provided areas of discrete particulate material securely separated by the adhesive connected webs.
