  • Patent number: 7956086
Abstract: A method for the manufacture of a sterile intravenous or intramuscular formulation of artesunic acid and the formulation are the subject of this invention. First the artesunic acid powder is sterilized with ethylene oxide and placed into a sterile container. The contained sterilized powder is then dissolved in sterile sodium phosphate buffered solution to produce an injectable intravenous or intramuscular formulation. The sodium phosphate dissolves and dilutes the artesunic acid powder without caking or frothing resulting in an improved drug product. The invention also relates to the formulation and a method of treating a patient with either uncomplicated or severe and complicated malaria.

  • Patent number: 7931919
Abstract: The invention is directed to stabilized whole-cell plasma, which retains the integrity and overall stability of the proteins and other macromolecules of the plasma. Stabilization is accomplished by the addition of glycine to plasma which allows for stabilization prior to freeze drying. Glycine, in the presence of the salt concentration in the plasma, does not recrystallize and acts as a superior stabilizer for the lyophilized plasma. The stability of the freeze dried plasma may be further improved by addition of protectants including calcium chloride, trisodium citrate, hydroxyethyl starch, ammonium sulfate and citric acid to maintain physiologic pH. Superior stability for a wide variety of plasma proteins and functions is shown. A system for the large scale preparation of sterile lyophilized plasma is also provided.

  • Patent number: 7851775
Abstract: An apparatus for monitoring the consumption of fluid by a user, particularly fluids being drank from a container. The apparatus may be used with wide variety of container types. The fluid monitoring unit uses a pair of gears in rotational engagement with each other such that fluid passes around them and rotation of at least one gear is indicative of fluid consumption. The gears in at least one exemplary embodiment are arranged to have low frictional resistance with respect to each other and their respective axles such that the gears quickly and easily rotate and over a wide fluid flow range. This allows the apparatus to accurately and consistently monitor fluid flow from very low flow rates to high flow rates and therefore provide very reliable consumption information. • Patent number: 7837723
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cooling a human being utilizes skin temperature feedback to control the amount of cooling. When the measured skin temperature reaches a preset high temperature, the human being is cooled until the measured skin temperature reaches a preset low temperature, and then cooling of the human being stops. In one embodiment, the preset high temperature is about 35 degrees Centigrade and the preset low temperature is about 33 degrees Centigrade. Cooling of the human being resumes whenever the preset high temperature is reached and pauses whenever the preset low temperature is reached to thereby provide intermittent cooling to the human being.
