  • Patent number: 8277071
Abstract: A path-illuminating wall-mountable light fixture (100) can comprise a wall-mountable support platform (101) that is configured and arranged to be installed on a wall (701) and at least a first light aperture (102) that is operably coupled to the wall-mountable support platform. This first light aperture is configured and arranged so that electrically-sourced light (110) emanating from the first light aperture is directed in a first direction that is substantially parallel to the wall, substantially non-perpendicular to the wall, and less than horizontal. When inclusive of a second such light aperture (104), the second light aperture can offer similarly oriented emanated light in a direction that is substantially the opposite of this first direction. By one approach, the light emanating from this (or these) light aperture(s) can be responsive to an animate object detector (107).

  • Patent number: 8279040
Abstract: A system for controlling operation of a plurality of movable barrier operators includes a controller configured to communicate with a plurality of movable barrier operators. The controller is programmed to receive a command to operate the plurality of movable barrier operators and to send a signal to start operation of a first movable barrier operator of the plurality of movable barrier operators in response to receiving the command. The controller is also programmed to send a signal to start a second movable barrier operator of the plurality of movable barrier operators at a time after sending the signal to start the operation of the first movable barrier operator. An arbitration of confirmation signals from the plurality of movable barrier operators may be used to determine the order of operation of the movable barrier operators.

  • Patent number: 8279227
Abstract: A method for detecting object collisions in a simulation, which includes identifying a plurality of objects moving along a path within a simulation area, and defining a grid comprising defined regions which individually define a region within which any of the plurality of objects could potentially occupy. For each of the objects, the method further includes identifying which of the defined regions that each of the plurality of object occupies for at least a portion of a time step, and for each of the objects, determining an associated potential collision set by identifying objects of the plurality of objects which occupy common regions of the defined regions during any portion of the time step. In addition, for each of the objects, the method further includes determining an actual collision set comprising objects with which a given object will collide during the time step based upon location parameters of objects included in the potential collision set.

  • Patent number: 8277864
Abstract: Methods for stabilizing liquid coffee concentrates are provided that form a coffee beverage that has a substantially consistent acidity profile. In one aspect, the methods blend a liquid coffee concentrate base with an edible alkali source in an amount effective to artificially increase a pH of the liquid coffee concentrate base. The liquid coffee concentrate base is aseptically processed and thermally treated at elevated temperatures for a time sufficient to artificially drive acid generating reactions in the liquid coffee concentrate to completion to form a stabilized liquid coffee concentrate.

  • Patent number: 8272583
Abstract: A variable arc sprinkler head or nozzle may be set to numerous positions to adjust the arcuate span of the sprinkler. The sprinkler head includes an arc adjustment valve having two portions that helically engage each other to define an opening that may be adjusted at the top of the sprinkler to a desired arcuate length. The arcuate length may be adjusted by pressing down and rotating a deflector to directly actuate the valve without the need for a hand tool. A method of irrigation is also provided involving moving the deflector between an arc adjustment position and an operational, irrigation position. The sprinkler head may also include a flow rate adjustment valve that may be adjusted by actuation or rotation of an outer wall portion of the sprinkler. Rotation of the outer wall portion causes a flow control member to move axially to or away from an inlet.

  • Patent number: 8268919
Abstract: It is intended to provide a polymer for detecting a fingerprint, which can be easily handled in a scene of the fingerprint detection as a substitute for conventionally employed 2-cyanoacrylate (a monomer), and a composition for detecting a fingerprint. It is also intended to provide a method of detecting a fingerprint whereby a fingerprint can be detected at a high sensitivity regardless of the color or conditions of a specimen and wherein the specimen can be well restored. The present polymer and composition for detecting a fingerprint and method of detecting a fingerprint using the same make it possible to definitely detect a fingerprint by using fluorescence even from an almost white specimen such as a shopping bag or an aluminum foil from which a fingerprint can be hardly detected by the existing methods.

  • Patent number: 8263163
Abstract: Disclosed is a cold-water soluble starch and a process for preparing same. Generally, the process comprises providing a hydroxyalkyl starch and applying a shearing force to the starch in an extruder in the presence of moisture, the force and the moisture each being sufficient to gelatinize at least substantially all of the granules of the starch to thereby form a sheared starch. The starch is heated to its gelatinization temperature after the starch has passed partially through the barrel of the extruder, with the moisture being maintained at a level sufficiently high to allow gelatinization but sufficiency low to protect the starch from becoming too sticky to extrude. The extruded starch product thus formed may be used in connection with a number of film-forming, coating, and other applications.
