Abstract: Variable pulsing of a dc source without change of polarity is used for lossless control of the speed of a compound dc motor. The pulsed dc supply is fed in series through the series field winding, armature and reversing switch system and the shunt field winding has one terminal connected to the pulsed dc source and its other terminal connected respectively through two conductively poled diodes to the opposite terminals of the armature winding. Two anti-kickback devices are also provided, one of which operates during reverse-current braking. The reversing switch system has two independently actuatable single-pole double-throw switches of which the respective arm contacts are connected to the ends of the armature winding, one fixed contact of each of these reversing switches being connected to the series field winding and the other pair, likewise connected together, being connected to one terminal of the dc supply.

Abstract: A method for producing a lithium tantalate single crystal comprises the steps of preparing a melt consisting essentially of lithium tantalate in a platinum-rhodium crucible including 20 to 40 weight percent of rhodium, and growing a lithium tantalate single crystal from the melt in an oxidizing atmosphere, for example, in the atmosphere.
Abstract: To provide a disposable container which can be prefabricated under sterile conditions, a pair of concentric plastic rings are formed with interfitting, interlocking projection and recess means permitting the rings to be snapped together, the rings being additionally formed with matching fitting surfaces to interpose the edge portion of a gas permeable membrane therebetween so that, when the membrane is placed on the outer ring and the two rings are snapped together, the membrane is irremovably held. Preferably, the outer ring is made of a softer, yielding plastic, the inner ring of a more rigid plastic, with a projection snapping into a groove formed on the inner, more rigid ring, and the matching clamping surfaces for the membrane forming a sinuous, tortuous path with a flexible projecting lip on the outer ring fitting into a recess to clamp the membrane and seal the membrane in the structure.

Abstract: To permit selective control of the voltage level of the on-board vehicle network as a function of battery voltage or exciter field control voltage of an automotive alternator, and continued operation of the regulator in spite of malfunction of control connections to the regulator, a voltage divide which supplies a voltage regulating element is formed with an additional tap thereon, the additional tap being connected to a current supply which supplies current to the voltage regulator to modify the voltge level of the tap supplying the control potential to the voltage regulator. The voltge regulator includes a controlled semiconductor switch which is selectively energized in accordance with voltage level at the main tap of the voltage divider with respect to a reference level.
Abstract: A coreless motor comprises a motor housing having a bearing, a rotor mounted within the housing, rotatably supported within the bearing and having a plurality of coils constituting a pancake coil, a permanent magnet stator mounted within the housing and disposed opposite to the rotor, in which the stator is arranged opposite to an effective coil section of the pancake coil and thus the rotor, and an annular spacing is formed opposite to an outer peripheral portion other than the effective coil section of the rotor so that a balance adjusting member for the rotor as well as an electrical part associated with the coreless motor can be provided in the annular spacing within the motor housing.
Abstract: A strip of recording paper on which a metallization is formed on a paper substrate, which metallization is burned off under the influence of an electrical discharge is passed beneath a recording head. In one embodiment, the recording head is moved transversely across the recording paper, while in engagement with a group of contact tracks which are, selectively, energized in accordance with the desired alphanumeric output. The recording head is formed with point contact electrodes and line-contact electrodes. The alphanumeric output is displayed on the instrument in segmental form and when a segment is to be printed in the direction transverse to the relative direction of movement of the head and the paper, the line-contact electrode is momentarily energized to cause printing of a line; if a segment is to be printed which extends in the direction of relative movement of the head and the paper, a point contact segment is energized for a distance corresponding to the distance of the segment to be formed.
Abstract: To prevent unusually high or low voltage output from an automotive-type alternator, in case of failure of connection from the alternator rectifier output to the automotive vehicle battery, a connecting network is provided connecting an auxiliary alternator output terminal to the voltage sensing circuit to control the voltage sensing circuit to in turn control the field current to the alternator to prevent excessive output voltages. Additionally, a further voltage sensing circuit is connected to the auxiliary terminal to provide limited energization to the field for self-excitation of the generator if the vehicle engine, driving the generator is started, for subsequent transfer of control to the main voltage sensing circuit, but to prevent continuous field current flow at full field current value to prevent burnout of the field in case the engine is not started, but the main vehicle switch, typically the ignition switch, is left closed.
Abstract: A flat body portion of a holder for bunched bananas is suitable for application of a label and is suspended by an upper hook. Flexible arms extend downward from the body portion and each carries a barb or a cross arm at its extremity. In the case of a cross arm, in the unloaded condition, it hangs obliquely to facilitate insertion into a banana bunch. After insertion of the arms into the banana bunch, the arms are bent, so that the cross arms approach a horizontal position and support several bananas of the bunch, distributing the support, to avoid dropping the bunch by the breaking off of a single banana.
Abstract: An improved optical fiber cathode ray tube is provided which enables the recording of images on a recording medium with a high resolution even if the recording medium is disposed with an increased gap between the tube and the recording medium to prevent the mechanical contact therebetween. The tube is provided with a light transparent thin layer between the non-lens-like optical fiber face plate and the phosphor layer. The light transparent thin layer is a transparent plate and may include a spatial gap.
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for preparing fibrous materials by wet method. Fibrous materials with excellent properties can be obtained by feeding the starting solution to the interface area of two phases of the coagulation bath.
Abstract: A hard compact material, such as rock, is broken by maintaining a column of relatively incompressible fluid, such as water, extending from outside into at least one hole which has been pre-drilled in the material to be broken. A shock wave is generated in the column outside the hole and is transmitted through the column into the hole. Due to the energy of the propagated shock wave, cracks are initiated and driven to a free surface of the material to break same. Breakage by the effect of the shock wave may be facilitated by means of an explosive. The explosive is delivered into the hole prior to the admission of fluid thereinto and is initiated by means of the transmitted shock wave.
