    Abstract: A process is provided for preparing a terminally functionalized polymer from a living polymer obtained by anionic polymerization of a diene monomer or mixture of a diene monomer and a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer which comprises reacting the living polymer with a compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, dialkylaminoaryl, aralkyl, and aprotic O, N and S- containing alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl and aralkyl groups; wherein R.sub.3 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, dialkylaminoaryl, aralkyl, and aprotic O, N and S- containing alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl and aralkyl groups; with the proviso that at least one of the R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 groups must be a dialkylaminoaryl group and that not all of the R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 groups can be aryl groups.

    Abstract: A method for incorporating metal salts of .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids into polymers and improving the cured physical properties of vulcanizable rubber compositions based on such polymers. The method includes the steps of preparing a polymer cement in a suitable organic solvent, forming a suspension of the metal salt of an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in a suitable aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent miscible with the organic solvent, mixing the polymer cement and the suspension together and thereafter removing the solvents to provide the metal salt uniformly dispersed within the polymer.

    Abstract: Solid golf balls are produced by the method comprising the steps of preparing a polymer cement in a suitable organic solvent, forming a suspension of the metal salt of an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in a suitable aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent miscible with the organic solvent, mixing the polymer cement and the suspension together, removing the solvents to provide the metal salt uniformly dispersed within the polymer, and thereafter manufacturing a solid golf ball therefrom. Solid golf balls comprise a vulcanizable rubber and from about 5 to 100 parts by weight of a reinforcing filler comprising a metal salt of an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, per 100 parts of the vulcanizable rubber. When the metal salts are incorporated via solution masterbatching, the resulting golf balls have improved physical properties.

    Abstract: Sidewalls (12,13) for pneumatic tires (10) having a greater stiffness improve handling and performance of the tire. The sidewalls comprise a rubber, selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, synthetic rubber and blends thereof, and from about 20 to 80 parts of a rubber compatible additive, per 100 parts of rubber capable of imparting a tensile modulus of from about 30 to 200 MPa at 10 percent elongation. Pneumatic tires provided with such sidewalls are improved and exhibit higher cornering force coefficients. A method for improving the handling characteristics of pneumatic tires includes the step of applying sidewalls to the tire carcass during building, having a tensile modulus of from about 30 to 200 MPa at 10 percent elongation.

The curable rubber compositions may optionally and in some instances preferably contain from about 0.1 to about 2.0 parts by weight of a co-curing agent.Cured rubber compositions of the invention may be utilized in various applications including for example conveyor belts and tire compounds.

Such adhesive compositions are particularly suitable for bonding sheets of black EPDM, especially sheets of cured black EPDM, elastomeric membranes together and may also be utilized to bond sheets of cured black EPDM to other uncured elastomers and to non-elastomeric substrates as well.The adhesive compositions to proper selection of the component (e) material and the addition of a color pigment or dye thereto may also be used to bond colored EPDM elastomers such as white, blue, yellow, green, etc.
