Abstract: Searching an optimal quantization step size at high speed when controlling the coding rate of an image sequence. A skip binary search section determines quantization step size ?skip by binary search, using a frame out of every m frames of an image sequence. A quantization step size correcting section determines quantization step size ?a that can achieve the target bit rate R by linear approximation from ?skip, generated bit rate at that time, quantization step size ?last of the immediately preceding loop and the generated bit rate at that time. A first coding section encodes the every m -th frame of the image sequence with quantization step size ?a and a quantization step size forecasting section determines quantization step size ?e that can achieve the target bit rate R by linear approximation. A second coding section encodes all the frames with the quantization step size ?e.
Abstract: A conversion apparatus and method is disclosed by which a file including data multiplexed therein can be edited or handled readily while maintaining the compatibility. A standard/independent conversion section converts a file of a standard AV multiplex format wherein video data and audio data are placed in a multiplexed state in a body into a file of an AV independent format wherein video data or audio data are placed collectively in a body. Meanwhile, an independent/standard conversion section converts a file of the AV independent formation into a file of the standard AV multiplex format.
Abstract: There is provided a monitoring apparatus including a front cover, an imaging device that is accommodated in the front cover and captures a subject image, a rear cover to be fixed onto a mounting surface on which the apparatus is mounted, and an emitting unit that emits light toward the mounting surface, where a light-emitting state of the light emitted by the emitting unit is associated with an operation state of the apparatus.
Abstract: A thermally-assisted magnetic recording head is provided, in which a light source with a sufficient power is disposed in the element-integration surface to improve mass-productivity. The head comprises, in an element-integration surface of a substrate: a light source; a waveguide for propagating light from the light source; and a magnetic pole for generating write field. Further, the edge along optical axis of the light source is set to be parallel with or inclined from the edge on the opposed-to-medium surface side of the element-integration surface. In the head, since the light source is disposed in the element-integration surface, the construction of the optical system can be completed in the stage of a wafer process. This construction can be relatively facilitated and simplified; thus, mass-productivity in the head manufacturing can be improved. Further, a light source with a sufficient power (cavity length) can be disposed in the element-integration surface.
Abstract: A system, apparatus, and method selectively provides content compression to a client based, in part, on whether the network connection from the client is determined to be a high latency, low-bandwidth connection. The present invention gathers one or more network metrics associated with the connection from the client. In one embodiment, the metrics include estimated TCP metrics, including smoothed round trip time, maximum segment size (MSS), and bandwidth delay product (BWDP). These estimated network metrics are employed to make an application layer decision of whether the client connection is a high latency, low-bandwidth connection. If it is, then content may be selectively compressed virtually on the fly for transfer over the network connection. In one embodiment, the selective compression uses a content encoding compression feature of the HTTP protocol standard.

Alternatively or in addition, a person detector and a control unit are provided, wherein a control unit switches the device part to the operating state in case the person detector detects the presence of a person at a distance from the device. Alternatively or in addition, an operating control is provided for manually switching the device from the operating state to the idle state.
Abstract: A method for forming a lead or lead extension includes forming an arrangement of elongated conductors. Each of the conductors extends from a proximal end of the arrangement to a distal end of the arrangement. Each of the conductors includes a layer of insulation disposed over a conductive core. A conductor-separating element is disposed over either the proximal end or the distal end of the arrangement. The conductor-separating element includes a plurality of ablation windows defined in a body. An end of at least one of the elongated conductors is radially extended over a portion of the conductor-separating element such that a portion of the at least one elongated conductor extends across at least one of the ablation windows. Insulation from the portion of the at least one conductor extending across the ablation window is ablated to expose a portion of the conductive core of the elongated conductor.

Abstract: Provided is a thermally-assisted magnetic recording head capable of setting the near-field light (NFL-) emission point to be sufficiently close to the write-field-generating portion. The head comprises a magnetic pole, a waveguide propagating light, and a NFL-generator coupled with the light in surface plasmon mode. The NFL-generator comprises a propagation edge extending to the NFL-generating end surface, at least a portion of the propagation edge being opposed to the waveguide with a distance, and the magnetic pole has a surface contact with a surface portion of the NFL-generator including no propagation edge. Therefore, the distance between the magnetic-pole end surface and the NFL-generating end surface becomes zero. The propagation edge is not contacted with the magnetic pole. Accordingly, the surface plasmon can propagate along on the propagation edge without being absorbed by the pole. Thus, the NFL-emission point is ensured to be at the end point of the propagation edge.
Abstract: An imaging method is provided. The method includes the steps of: amplifying an imaging signal obtained from an image sensor for converting imaging light into an imaging signal; carrying out nonlinear processing on the amplified signal; adding a predetermined plurality of frames of the imaging signal subjected to the nonlinear processing per frame; and carrying out the variable setting of amplification gain of each frame on the basis of a signal accumulation period of each frame in the plurality of frames subjected to the addition.
Abstract: An automated system for matching orders to buy and sell securities including a displayed market where orders are executed at a BBO price and where information about the market is made available to investors and a midpoint matching market for matching buy and sell orders at a predetermined price, namely, the midpoint between the national best bid and offer. The displayed market and the midpoint matching market are linked so that orders submitted to the displayed market are exposed to the midpoint matching market and can be executed at an improved price if a contra order is available on the midpoint matching market.
Abstract: Systems (100) and methods (600) for reading data from a memory device (106). The methods involve (606) receiving first read request signals (118, 120, 122, 126, 128) for first data stored in the memory device. In response to the first read request signals, (608) retrieving a first page of data from a cell array (268) of the memory device. The methods also involve (616) receiving second read request signals for second data stored in the memory device. (618) Next, a determination is made as to whether at least a portion of a memory address for the second data is the same as at least a respective portion of a memory address for the first data. (622) If it is determined that the respective portions of the memory addresses are the same, then a read access to the cell array is disabled.

Abstract: A method, system, an apparatus are directed towards selectively prefetching content over a network. A request for a content object is received. The content object may comprise a link to another content object. A cachability measure for the link may be determined based on whether a plurality of previous requests for the link returned the other content object, an annotation in a link map, a probability of traversing the link, a network metric, or the like. A prefetchability measure for the link may be determined based on the cachability measure and/or another factor relating to the link. The other factor may be an annotation of the link indicating that caching the other content object will cause a related object to be uncachable. Based on the prefetchability measure, the other content object is selectively prefetched for subsequent provisioning and/or display.
