  • Patent number: 4862883
Abstract: An intramedullary nail comprising an elongate tubular rod with upper proximal and lower distal ends and positioned within and extending longitudinally of the intramedullary canal of a fractured bone. A pair of adjacent, elongate anchor blades with upper and lower ends are positioned with their upper end portions within a transverse slot in the distal end of the rod and are connected therewith by a single transverse pivot pin. The blades normally extend downwardly from the rod and are pivoted radially outwardly from opposite sides of the rod to deployed positions where they establish anchoring engagement within the bone. The blades have cam parts and stop edges at their upper ends. An elongate setting tool is slidably engaged in and shiftable downwardly in the rod. The tool has a downwardly-disposed surface normally engaging said cam parts to pivot the blades to their deployed positions when the tool is moved downwardly and to establish stopped engagement with said stop edges when the blades are deployed.

  • Patent number: 4850313
Abstract: A cruciform internal combustion reciprocating engine characterized by two right angularly related pairs of axially spaced cylinders with related piston units including pairs of axially aligned, axially spaced pistons, each piston is engaged in one of the cylinders. The pistons of each unit are rigidly connected by an elongate yoke. A crank shaft has an eccentric crank pin at right angle to the axes of and positioned between the cylinders of the pairs of cylinders. A double isosceles sliding block linkage motion-translating mechanism drivingly couples the crank pin and the yokes and includes a twin eccentric disc driver rotatably carried by the crank pin with the discs thereof rotatably engaged with the yokes. The pistons of the piston units include elongate annular bearing sleeves in rotary bearing engagement about the pistons and in linear sliding and rotary bearing engagement with the bores of related cylinders.

  • Patent number: 4833780
Abstract: An improved pick tool for piercing, prying and moving small parts within assemblies of delicate and fragile parts. The pick includes an elongate, tubular lever arm with front and rear ends. A manually-engagable handle is related to the rear end of the arm and is shiftable axially relative thereto. An elongate shaft with a pointed front end and a rear end fixed to the handle is slidably engaged within the arm. A compression spring within the arm and engaging the shaft yieldingly holds the shaft and the handle in a rear unactuated position where the pointed front end portion of the shaft occurs within the forward portion of the arm. The handle and shaft are shiftable forwardly to an actuated position where the pointed front portion of the shaft projects freely forwardly from the arm. A tubular work-engaging bushing of soft, flexible and resilient plastic material projects forwardly from the arm and normally shrouds the pointed end of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4825047
Abstract: A controller for an electric resistance waterbed mattress heater supplied with electric current by an elongate power cord extending between the heater and a power service outlet. The controller includes a small diameter elongate cylindrical housing in which an adjustable on and off switch is mounted and into which the cord is extended and connected with the switch. The switch includes a Bourdon tube to actuate the switch between opened and closed positions when the tube is caused to deflect by changes of pressure therein. A capillary tube is connected with and extends from the Bourdon tube to the exterior of the housing and about which it is formed and supported. An adjusting knob is positioned at one end of the body and is coupled with a part of the switch to move switch parts relative to each other and to the Bourdon tube to adjust and set the operating position of parts of the switch.

  • Patent number: 4809433
Abstract: An improved single-pass hook and blade type agricultural shear with a central pivotal axis. The shear includes an elongate hook with an outer end and an inner end pivotally supported about said axis. Said hook has a substantially radially extending circumferentially disposed concave branch supporting shearing edge. The shear next includes an elongate blade with an outer end and an inner end supported about said axis. Said blade has a substantially radially extending circumferentially disposed convex primary cutting edge opposing said shearing edge. The cutting edge has an outer portion and has an inner portion circumferentially offset from said outer portion and has a substantially circumferentially extending radially inwardly disposed intermediate cutting edge extending between the outer and inner portions of said primary cutting edge. The outer portion of the primary cutting edge and the intermediate cutting edge define a sharp pointed lancet blade between the ends of the primary cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 4721021
Abstract: An improved handle structure for manually engagable, manually manipulated implements and devices such as hammers, saws, hand power tools and the like. The handle structure is an elongate structure adapted to be comfortably gripped in a hand of a user. The handle is resilient and yieldingly compressable within the grip of a user on a plane which is normally substantially parallel to the mean plane of the palm of a user's hand and which provides a non-static, shock absorbing grip structure. The handle structure is substantially rigid and non-yielding on that plane which is normal to said plane of the user's hand. The handle further includes a soft resilient fingertip supporting pad that conforms with and yieldingly supports the user's fingers and soft resilient palm engaging parts that yieldingly conform with the palm of the user's hand at primary force transmitting points between the palm and the handle structure and which provides for circulation of air therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4709602
Abstract: Improved, manually-operable, adjusting mechanisms for click-type, adjustable torque wrenches which include manually-engageable, resilient, plastic, tubular handgrips slidably engaged about the rear end portions of elongate, tubular, metal wrench lever arms and which are shiftable longitudinally from normal, forward positions in rotary-driving engagement with the arms to actuated rear positions out of rotary-driving engagement with the arm. The invention resides in an improved locking mechanism releaseably locking the grip in rotary-driving engagement with the arm when in its normal position and yieldingly permitting rotation of the grip relative to the arm when turning forces between the arm and grip exceed the shear strength of the material of which the grip is made.
