  • Patent number: 5457315
Abstract: A power efficient selective mass range trap filling process in which the RF trapping voltage connected to the ring electrode is slowly modulated simultaneously with: (1) e-beam ionization bombardment and (2) application of a broadband supplemental waveform containing selected secular frequencies to the QIT end caps. The modulation permits the reduction of the number of frequency components required in the broadband supplemental waveform and permits elimination of absorption by ions of energy from more than one supplemental frequency component at any one time.

  • Patent number: 5457719
Abstract: An on-chip digital servo scheme for providing continuous calibration of integrated circuit on-chip time delay devices to provide real-time regulation against various parameter or environmental changes, such as processing, temperature and power supply variations. The techniques are particularly useful for semiconductor delay lines comprised of a selectable number of identical unit delay circuits having the same propagation time. This scheme constantly monitors the delay changes in the unit delay elements and calibrates the delay line by comparing the delay against a stable, crystal controlled reference clock period to determine, in each instance, how many unit delay elements in the delay line is needed to effectively delay the amount of time to equal the reference clock period. A real time digital pointer number is generated and updated while the device is in operation.

  • Patent number: 5451894
Abstract: The use of three identical delay line circuits enables one of said delay circuits to be connected as a minimum delay reference and a second delay circuit to then be continuously compared to said minimum delay reference delay circuit to provide a code which calibrates the second delay line circuit by indicating and controlling continuously the length of the second delay line circuit to provide an exactly 360-degree phase shift of the reference signal under variable temperatures, pressures and voltages. Then, by maintaining the length of the third identical delay line at said determined 360-degree length, and by being able to select any tap output of the third identical delay line circuit responsive to a command, the third delay line circuit provides an adjustable, feedback calibrated, delay line circuit.

  • Patent number: 5452069
Abstract: A spark sampling microparticle generator device and method providing means to first ionize a gap and then to switch a stabilized and controllable current into and out of said ionized gap to provide extremely high, selectable current density in a sample material in said gap with very fast rise and fall times to ablate said material to form microparticles. A plurality of identical modular circuits containing high frequency power transistors are selectably switchably connected in parallel simultaneously to the gap to achieve current densities which are higher than achievable with a single transistor, thereby obtaining the benefits of the high frequency response without being limited by the current limitations of the available transistors.

  • Patent number: 5417833
Abstract: A magnetron sputter apparatus is disclosed which includes a rotatable generally heart-shaped, closed-loop magnet array behind the target and in front of a pair of separately driven stationary electromagnets. The apparatus is optimized to produce a sputtered film on a planar substrate having desired film characteristics such as uniformity of thickness, good step coverage, and good via filling and efficient utilization of the target. The shape of the generally heart-shaped array includes a flattened tip forming an arc of a circle centered on the axis of rotation and concave cusps in the lobes of the heart-shape. The electromagnets are used to increase target utilization at its center and to compensate for the change in shape of the target and distance from the target to the substrate with depletion.

  • Patent number: 5363016
Abstract: A PPM coupled-cavity traveling wave tube has an RF structure comprising a re-entrant double-staggered ladder circuit. Several cavities are separated by iron pole pieces with penetrating slots to provide RF coupling between the cavities. Re-entrant copper bars are attached to both sides of the pole pieces that define the boundaries between adjacent pairs of cavities. These bars extend diametrically across the cavity interior around beam drift tubes The re-entrant bars on adjacent pole pieces are rotated relative to each other by 90 degrees about the beam axis. The bars are hollow along their length, and thereby provide channels for coolant flow around the drift tubes. These channels communicate through apertures with coolant distribution channels in the outer cavity walls extending along the length of the traveling-wave tube.

  • Patent number: 5355214
Abstract: A method and means for accurately regulating the rate of flow of supply gas to the burner or torch of a spectrometer. The flow rate is controlled by a valve having a closure member which is movable between a position at which it provides maximum obstruction to gas flow, and a position at which it provides minimum such obstruction. The closure member movement is controlled by a pulsed electrical signal so that the closure member moves rapidly and repeatedly between each of the two positions. Gas flow rate through the valve is therefore dependent upon the aggregate of the times the closure member spends in either of the two positions referred to, and that flow rate is changed by varying the frequency and/or pulse duration of the pulsed signal.
