  • Patent number: 5197242
Abstract: A dual-pane thermal window unit comprises two non-intersecting or, preferably, substantially parallel, spaced window panes, mounted in a window frame, a first of the panes having affixed thereto a first wall of an electro-optical liquid crystal cell providing a selected light transmittance, and a second of said panes delimiting, with a second wall of said cell, a space providing a thermal break. Each of the first and second walls comprises an electrically conductive film composed of plastic and having sufficient supporting strength to maintain the structural integrity of the cell. The window is light weight, economical to manufacture and efficient and reliable in operation.

  • Patent number: 5186727
Abstract: Mixed-metal oxide absorbents having superior CO.sub.2 and water removal capacity and superior regenerability are prepared from novel mixed-metal carbonate precursors or from mixed-metal oxides derived from those precursors. The precursors are prepared from a salt of silver and the salt of a second metal. The second metal may be selected from the group consisting of magnesium, iron, cobalt, nickel, zinc, and other metals for which the metal carbonate to metal oxide reaction occurs at a temperature of not greater than about 400.degree. C. The precursors have an unique x-ray diffraction pattern characteristic of the silver carbonate pattern rather than of the physical mixture of the silver carbonate and the carbonate of the second metal.

  • Patent number: 5186865
Abstract: Azo-type optically active compounds and polymers are provided based on compounds of the general structure[substituted aryl]--N.dbd.N--[substituted aryl]wherein aryl substituents are introduced which hinder or prohibit rotation around the single bonds of the --N.dbd.-- central moiety (as well as around certain other single bonds), to provide "planarized" structures having improved optically active properties, especially electro-optically active properties. These compounds and polymers find use in optically active waveguides.

  • Patent number: 5185301
Abstract: A sinter-reactive lanthanum chromite powder is prepared from the lanthanum chromite precursor LaCr.sub.1-x M.sub.x O.sub.3 (Adsorbate). The powder is crystalline, has the formula LaCr.sub.1-x M.sub.x O.sub.3, where M is magnesium or calcium and x ranges from about 0.03 to 0.3, and sinters to densities higher than about 95% of theoretical density at temperature as low as 1600.degree. C. in inert or reducing atmospheres. Sintering to such high density at temperatures in the vicinity of 1600.degree. C. makes the powder particularly suited for use as interconnect material for solid oxide fuel cells.

  • Patent number: 5176983
Abstract: Homopolymers and copolymers with an acrylic backbone chain having pendant side-chains containing a nitrone functional group undergo change in refractive index upon exposure to actinic radiation. • Patent number: 5175787
Abstract: This invention provides birefringent optical waveguide structures of crystalline aluminum garnet of a high refractive index which are clad with crystalline aluminum garnet of a lower refractive index. Due to predetermined lattice mismatch between garnet substrate and cladding layer, strain is induced which causes a stress with resultant birefringence in the waveguide layer. When linearly polarized light enters such stressed waveguide in certain orientations, the linear polarization will be preserved by the stress-induced birefringence. These birefringent clad waveguides can be in the form of slabs, channels, ribs, or any of the typical optical waveguide structures. They are useful at high temperature.
