  • Patent number: 5242244
Abstract: An aquatic control sleeve apparatus for enabling application of chemical agents to underwater aquatic vegetation accumulating in a body of flowing water and a method for enabling application of the same. The aquatic control sleeve apparatus has an aquatic control sleeve placeable within a body of flowing water substantially parallel to its normal flow path. A first collar attached to the upstream end of the aquatic control sleeve funnels the entire flow of water into the aquatic control sleeve. The water surrounding the aquatic control sleeve is stilled or pacified by the funnelling of the moving water into the aquatic control sleeve, thus permitting the application of chemical agents to the stilled water to treat underwater vegetation without the fear of the chemical agents being swept away by the water current. A second collar is provided at the downstream end of the aquatic control sleeve and discharges the water funnelled through the aquatic control sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5233941
Abstract: An animal feeder is disclosed for use with a ground surface. The animal feeder includes a container which defines a chamber adapted to contain granular animal feed. A plurality of legs support the container in an elevated position above the ground surface. An elongated tube open at each end is secured to the container so that the open upper end of the tube is open to the chamber and thus to the animal feed contained therein. The tube extends generally vertically downwardly so that the bottom of the tube is open to the ground surface. Moreover, the tube is dimensioned so that its lower end is spaced upwardly from the ground surface by a distance such that animal feed from the chamber flows downwardly from the chamber in a controlled fashion and forms a pile on the ground beneath the tube and around the lower end of the tube. Thus, the pile blocks the further flow of animal feed through the tube until a portion of the animal feed on the ground surface is eaten or otherwise removed.

  • Patent number: 5234569
Abstract: A sensor is disclosed for detecting the relative air/fuel ratio of the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine. The sensor includes a housing which defines a closed interior chamber. An oxygen diffusion cell constructed of a solid electrolytic material has one side exposed to the exhaust gas and a second side exposed to the housing chamber so that oxygen ions flow through the diffusion cell in dependence upon the relative oxygen concentration in both the exhaust gas and the internal air chamber. A sense cell constructed of a solid electrolytic material also has one side exposed to the air chamber and a second side exposed to a substantially constant source of oxygen, such as the atmosphere. Thus, oxygen ion flow through the sense cell varies as a function of the oxygen concentration in the air chamber and thus of the oxygen concentration in the engine exhaust gas.

  • Patent number: 5230218
Abstract: Apparatus and a method are provided whereby snow is made in an indoor environment over extended periods. Within the indoor environment temperature and humidity conditions are set up to enable snow to be produced by a spray of water in the air. Such conditions are maintained for an extended time by the use of thermal storage means. The thermal storage means is cooled to a low temperature by coolant in turn cooled by refrigeration apparatus. The thermal storage means uses a mass of relatively high conductivity material through which the coolant is circulated and the coolant is used to cool and dry air to be discharged into the indoor environment.

  • Patent number: 5228852
Abstract: A handpiece assembly is disclosed for use with a dental laser assembly of the type having a laser and an elongated optical fiber assembly. The optical fiber assembly has a proximal end which receives radiation from the laser and a distal end which delivers the laser radiation to a target site. The handpiece assembly includes an elongated handpiece which is dimensioned to be held in a human hand. A longitudinal throughbore is formed in the handpiece and is dimensioned to slidably receive the optical fiber assembly so that the distal end of the optical fiber assembly extends outwardly from one end of the handpiece. A locking assembly removably locks the other end of the handpiece against longitudinal movement to the optical fiber assembly. Furthermore, the entire handpiece assembly is discarded after use on a single patient to prevent disease transmission by the handpiece.

  • Patent number: 5226290
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a hydro-mechanical or electro-hydro-mechanical control system utilized for positioning a mechanical device. The control system incorporates a control valve for selectively controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid to input ports of a power output transducer. The power output transducer is then utilized to position a mechanical device. The control system is a closed loop circuit adapted to supply hydraulic fluid at a desired supply pressure to the control valve. The supply pressure is varied in relation to the absolute value of the pressure differential or load pressure exerted across the input ports of the power output transducer. A pressure regulating apparatus is provided for selectively regulating the supply pressure to a value that is nominally equal to the absolute value of the load pressure summed with a preselected supplemental pressure value across the regulating apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5223915
Abstract: A system for inspecting the ends of cigarettes prior to their packaging on a conveyor line. The system provides telecamera units which produce images of the ends of a group of cigarettes. A processing unit then analyses the brightness level of a given area on each cigarette end. The processing unit then counts the total number of areas having a brightness level within a given range and compares that number with that of a reference end image for determining the existence of defects. An expulsion unit is further provided for rejecting those groups of cigarettes which fall below the requirements of the reference end image.
