  • Patent number: 6015528
Abstract: A composite material mixture of free flowing reinforcement particles in a molten metal is solidified at a cooling rate greater than about 15.degree. C. per second between the liquidus and solidus temperatures of the matrix alloy. This high cooling rate imparts a homogeneous structure to the solid composite material. Care is taken to avoid the introduction of gas bubbles into the molten composite material while the mixture is stirred to prevent segregation of the particles. For viscous melts, an artificial surface layer such as a fiberglass blanket may be used to prevent entrapment of bubbles during pre-casting stirring. Additionally, gas bubbles are removed from the molten mixture by filtering and skimming.

  • Patent number: 5962866
Abstract: A superconductor device has a substrate with an inclined surface that divides the substrate surface into a lower planar substrate surface and an upper planar substrate surface. A lower layer of an anisotropic superconductor material is epitaxially deposited on the lower planar substrate surface so that an a-axis of the anisotropic superconductor material of the lower layer is exposed at a top edge of the lower layer. An upper layer of an anisotropic superconductor material is epitaxially deposited on the upper planar substrate surface so that an a-axis of the anisotropic superconductor material of the upper layer is exposed at a top edge of the upper layer. A layer of a non-superconductor material overlies the inclined surface and the layers of anisotropic superconductor material.

  • Patent number: 5950704
Abstract: The surface features of an article are replicated by preparing a master model having a preselected surface feature thereon which is to be replicated, and replicating the preselected surface feature of the master model. The replication is accomplished by providing a piece of a bulk-solidifying amorphous metallic alloy, contacting the piece of the bulk-solidifying amorphous metallic alloy to the surface of the master model at an elevated replication temperature to transfer a negative copy of the preselected surface feature of the master model to the piece, and separating the piece having the negative copy of the preselected surface feature from the master model.

  • Patent number: 5949074
Abstract: A spectroradiometer images a scene as a repeating sequence of spectral images, each of which spectral images depicts the scene at a preselected wavelength. In a preferred embodiment, the image is of size 256 by 192 pixels, and the sequence repetition rate is about 20-30 cycles per second. Full spectral analysis on the resulting sequences is performed substantially in real time. The spectroradiometer includes a collector of energy in the X-ray or infrared ranges with a lens, a circularly variable spectral filter, and a gate which gates the output of the filter to a detector array which outputs the sequence of electronic spectral images. These images are corrected for systematic errors and calibrated, and correlated with a preselected spectral response function. The image may be further post-processed and displayed in video format or used otherwise.

  • Patent number: 5942289
Abstract: A hardfacing apparatus includes a deposition head including a heat source, a hardfacing material source, and a chill block having a chill block surface. The deposition head is positioned at a location so as to deposit a mass of the hardfacing material onto the workpiece surface. The chill block is positioned remote from the deposition head with the chill block surface in a facing-but-spaced-apart relation to the workpiece surface, separated from the workpiece surface by a gap having a dimension between the chill block and the workpiece surface of a standoff distance D.sub.S. Molten hardfacing material is deposited onto the workpiece surface from the deposition head. Simultaneously, the workpiece surface is moved relative to the hardfacing apparatus so that the molten hardfacing material passes into the gap and is molten as it enters the gap.
