Abstract: A surface modified filler comprises sodium aluminocarbonate particles having a surface coating comprising an organofunctional silane or an organofunctional titanate. The surface modified filler is useful as a fire retardant material in thermoplastic and thermoset compositions.
Abstract: Compositions for producing foamed products which include additives and blowing agents which cause the surface treatment additives to migrate to the surfaces of foamed products. The products produced from the compositions require less additives because the incorporated additives are concentrated at the surfaces thereof.

Abstract: A stabilized powdered endothermic blowing agent which is a mixture of polycarboxylic acid and an inorganic carbonate, the polycarboxylic acid and the inorganic carbonate each having been surface treated with a component which prevents water from being absorbed thereby. The blowing agent is incorporated into a composition for producing foamed products. Additives may be added to the composition which function in conjunction with the blowing agent to cause surface migration of the additives and/or improve weld line strength of the foamed products.

Abstract: A method for producing a low-structure magnesium silicate SLR product useful to lower the strike through of low brightness paper products comprises adding a raw mineral source of soluble magnesium ions and sulfuric acid in a proportion and under conditions effective to form a slurry comprising soluble magnesium sulfate and a silica leach residue (SLR), and adding to the slurry a solution of an alkali metal silicate in a molar equivalent proportion of MgO:SiO.sub.2 of 1:2.0-4.0 under conditions effective to precipitate the magnesium ions and form a product comprising a low-structure magnesium silicate and SLR having a proportion of SiO.sub.2 MgO:SLR of 50-75%:5-12%:10-50% by weight of the product.A low-structure magnesium silicate SLR filler comprises 50 to 75 wt % SiO.sub.2, 5 to 12 wt % MgO, 10 to 50 wt % SLR, 0 to 6 wt % Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, and 0 to 7 wt % Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, wherein the proportion MgO:SiO.sub.2 is 1:2.0-4.0.A paper product comprises at least an amount of the filler of the invention.
Abstract: Novel precipitated silicon dioxide abrasive compositions which can be incorporated into therapeutic toothpaste compositions containing soluble fluoride salts are disclosed. The abrasives comprise low structure, high fluoride compatible amorphous precipitated silicon dioxides (silicas) having a controlled refractive index for use in low water clear gel dentifrice applications. Also provided are methods for preparation of the novel silicon dioxide abrasives and resulting toothpaste formulations containing such abrasives.

Abstract: An improved method for the production of synthetic hydrotalcites having high purity (99+%) and small particle size (<2 microns) is disclosed. This method used inexpensive and available reactants and is suitable for commercial scale production. A source of magnesium, such as magnesium hydroxide; a source of aluminum from a mixture of alumina trihydrate and an alkali metal aluminate; and a source of carbonate, such as sodium bicarbonate, are reacted under hydrothermal conditions at a temperature of between 160.degree.-200.degree. C. to produce synthetic hydrotalcite.

Abstract: A family of novel and unique synthetic alkali metal alumino-silicates (SAMS) are produced by the hydrothermal reaction between kaolin and alkali metal silicates. The integrated composition of the SAMS products is a unique entity having an overall composition ofxM.sub.2 O:Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 :ySiO.sub.2 :zH.sub.2 Owhere x is the number of moles of alkali metal oxide and is an integer from 0.01 to 2.0, M is the alkali metal, y is the number of moles of SiO.sub.2 in the unique SAMS compositions and is an integer greater than 2.0, and z is the number of moles of bound water and is an integer ranging from 1.0 to 5.0. The unique SAMS compositions are structured materials in which the structure can be controlled, and are therefore useful as functional fillers, as TiO.sub.2 extenders, as silica extenders or as reinforcing agents for paper, paint, rubber, plastics and specialty products.
