Abstract: A method for converting hydrazine and/or substituted hydrazines, particularly unsymmetric dimethyl hydrazine (UDMH), to ammonia or ammonia and the corresponding amines by hydrogenation over a supported Group VIII metal catalyst. Preferably, the hydrazines are dissolved in a suitable solvent and then hydrogenated at a temperature of about 0.degree. to 250.degree. C., followed by separation of the commercially valuable ammonia and amines. Alternatively, a gas phase reaction may be used.

Abstract: An improved fiber reinforced glass composite includes a refractory fiber in a matrix of a nitrogen-containing black glass ceramic having the empirical formula SiN.sub.z C.sub.x O.sub.y where x ranges from greater than zero up to about 2.0, preferably 0.1 to 1.0, y ranges from 0.5 up to about 3.0, preferably 0.7 to 1.8, and z ranges from above zero up to about 1.5, preferably 0.2 to 1.0. Preferably the black glass ceramic is derived from cyclosiloxane monomers containing a vinyl group attached to silicon and/or a hydride-silicon group. The cyclosiloxane monomers are polymerized and then pyrolyzed in an ammonia-containing atmosphere to produce the nitrogen-containing black glass (silicon oxycarbonitride).

Abstract: A process for producing microspheres of silica having a maximum diameter of at least 2.5 .mu.m particularly about 2.5 .mu.m to 10 .mu.m from the hydrolysis of a silica precursor, such as a tetraalkoxysilane, which is characterized by employing precursor solutions and feed rates which initially yield a two-phase reaction mixture and beginning the hydrolysis reaction with solutions cooled below ambient temperatures, preferably below about 10.degree. C. Either monodisperse or polydisperse microspheres may be formed.
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the enzymatic synthesis of electrically conductive substituted and unsubstituted polyanilines. Aniline monomer(s), an oxidizing agent, which comprises an enzyme and an electron acceptor, and an acidifying agent are reacted together to form polyanilines.
Abstract: Electroless deposition of copper from solution onto a substrate, particularly a polymeric laminate for use in electronic circuitry, is accomplished by first treating said substrate with a stilbene-based fluorescent brightener to sensitize said substrate and thereafter contacting said substrate first with a solution of a catalytic metal and then with an electroless copper plating solution.
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for remediating vaporous pollutants which comprises passing a vaporous stream containing one or more of pollutants through a bioreactor, the bioreactor comprising a plurality of biologically active bodies, the biologically active body comprising a macroporous substrate and one or more of microorganisms capable of remediating one or more of said pollutants, wherein the substrate is fabricated from a decomposition-resistant material. The present invention further provides an apparatus for this process.

Abstract: The present invention is a barium-containing alumina with the X-ray pattern of the FIGURE. The alumina may be synthesized by simultaneously adding a polyether or a polyalcohol and an aqueous solution of a water soluble barium carboxylate to an aqueous boehmite sol or suspension to form a gel, the gel having a polyether or polyalcohol content of about 2 wt. % to about 26 wt. %, preferably about 10 wt. % to about 20 wt. %. The gel is then dried and calcined to convert it to an essentially pure barium-containing delta alumina. The alumina may be optionally hydrothermally treated to induce further crystallization. The final product contains about 2 wt. % to about 18 wt. % Ba, preferably about 8 wt. % to about 12 wt. %.
Abstract: A curing agent for epoxy resins having improved solubility characteristics has the formula ##STR1## where R is --CH.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 X or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 C.sub.6 H.sub.4 X,and X is either --H, --CH.sub.3, --OCH.sub.3, --OH, or --NY,and where Y is --H or CH.sub.3.Such substituted cyanoguanidines are soluble in various solvents and do not require the use of undesirable solvents necessary with cyanoguanidine (dicyanodiamide) itself.
Abstract: A carbon-containing black glass has the empirical formula SiC.sub.x O.sub.y wherein x ranges from about 0.5 to about 2.0 and y ranges from about 0.5 to about 3.0 and is resistant to oxidation up to a temperature of about 1400.degree. C. The black glass is synthesized by heating a spirosiloxane polymer in a non-oxidizing atmosphere up to a temperature in the range of from about 750.degree. C. to about 1400.degree. C. The polymers are synthesized by reacting the spirosiloxane oligomers: ##STR1## wherein a and b are integers from 0 to 20, preferably 1 to 5, c and d are integers from 2 to 20, preferably 2 to 6, m is an integer from 0 to 10, preferably 0 to 4, and wherein for each silicon atom in the oligomer having R and R' moieties, R is independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups from C.sub.1 to C.sub.20, preferably C.sub.1 to C.sub.5, and R' is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, and alkenyl groups from C.sub.2 to C.sub.20, preferably from C.sub.2 to C.sub.5.
Abstract: An improved fiber reinforced glass composite includes a boron nitride-coated refractory fiber in a matrix of a black glass ceramic having the empirical formula SiCxOy where x ranges from about 0.9 to 1.6 and y ranges from about 0.7 to 1.8. Preferably the black glass ceramic is derived from cyclosiloxane monomers containing a vinyl group attached to silicon and/or a hydride-silicon group. Graceful failure can be obtained after exposure of the composites to temperatures up to 600.degree.-700.degree. C. in air.
