  • Patent number: 4236455
Abstract: An electrical apparatus is disclosed to increase the adhesive load per driving axle and therefore the corresponding permissible tractive and braking forces per driving axle of locomotives and motor-coaches which travel on rails and to contribute directly to the over-all tractive force or braking force of such vehicles. In one configuration the electrical apparatus includes a system of linear inductors for generating travelling magnetic fields in the rails, the inductors including a double sequence of conjugate poles, the lines of force of which pass transversely through the upper flange of the rail. In another configuration, the electrical apparatus includes both a system of linear inductors for generating, in the rails, a magnetic field, travelling or fixed, and a conjugate system of electrical brushes for injecting, in the rails, electrical currents in controlled relationship with the magnetic field.

  • Patent number: 4236917
Abstract: Directly prior to the supplying of the expelling pulse of compressed gas into the pump tube, the suction supply is cut off, whereby the withdrawn portion of metal is expelled into the molten metal body under the action of the sum of its own weight and the compressed-gas pulse. To ensure the accurate timing of the suction cut-off moment and the gas pulse supply, the cover of the pump has mounted therein rod valves cooperating with a floating sleeve having its float actuated by the molten metal. The cover has also mounted therein at least one electric contact probe wired into the circuit controlling the supply of compressed gas pulses. The cutting-off of the suction is effected by the molten of an inner nozzle in an outer one, the nozzles being arranged at the intersection of the suction line and the compressed gas supply line.

  • Patent number: 4236384
Abstract: An article, such as a ring structure for example, having a band and an ornamental portion affixed on the top thereof. The band is formed of two portions each being pivotally hinged with respect to one another. One end of the portion of the band is provided with a wedge shaped resilient locking member which cooperates with a lock formed in a space formed between an upper surface of the band and the ornamental portion of the ring. For opening the ring from the closed to the open position, the user inserts a key in a keyway formed in the hollow space, whereby the key causes the locking member to be released from the lock and in turn as a rotational force applied the key upon the locking member, the band portion will be caused to pivot about the pivot point thus opening the ring band permitting release from the finger. Alternate embodiments include a locking arrangement without the hinge assembly.

  • Patent number: 4235626
Abstract: In the process of melting metal, a portion of molten metal is alternately withdrawn from beneath the surface of the body of molten metal and is expelled into the lower part of a metal holding means through a pipe of a gas-dynamic pump, which pipe, fitted in a cover of the metal holding means, is mounted for axial reciprocation and angular swinging in a ball-and-socket joint to thereby enable fan-like projection of a submerged metal jet within the limits of an angle corresponding to the dimensions of the metal holding means, thus providing for effective stirring of the melt body throughout the bottom area; stepwise reciprocation of the pump pipe is effected by means of a pneumatic positioning device, and the frequency of the metal-withdrawing and metal-expelling cycles is alternated during operating process with the aid of a preset time relay.

  • Patent number: 4235396
Abstract: A night sighting arrangement for automatic guidance of missiles, in which an image is displayed in Cartesian coordinates for the observation and target recognition. An image display in polar coordinates is provided for target identification and aiming procedures, as well as missile guidance correction. The display in Cartesian coordinates has a pivoting mirror used for the horizontal deflection. A polygon prism is used for the vertical deflection where reversal optics systems required for polar scanning, are fixed and the image is rotated by 90.degree. relative to the scan direction of the deflection mirror by the reversal optics. For the polar scan, the deflection mirror is held fixed in the middle position, and the optical elements causing the image rotation are rotated at half the image frequency. The same deflection mirror is used for the infrared picture taking and the optical image display, so that automatic synchronization takes place in the image direction during Cartesian display.

  • Patent number: 4233830
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the continuous production of bright copper rod from stock discharged from a continuous casting machine in which an oxide layer formed on the stock during its passage from the continuous casting machine in the atmosphere is subjected to an initial breakage and separation operation by discharging a chemically active liquid at a relatively low pressure against the oxide layer followed by descaling the stock after the initiation of the breakage of the layer by projecting jets of liquid at a relatively high pressure against the stock. The stock which is now free from oxide layer is rolled in a rolling mill in the presence of cooling and lubricating liquid which isolates the stock from the outside atmosphere and allows the formation of rod in the stands of the rolling mill. The rod obtained from the rolling mill is cooled by passage through a duct in counterflow with a cooling liquid such that the rod leaves the duct at a temperature below 80.degree. C.
