  • Patent number: 4453951
Abstract: Sintered silicon carbide composites containing diamond crystals are made through a process wherein a first dispersion of diamond crystals and carbon black in paraffin is formed, along with a second dispersion of carbon fiber, carbon black and filler in paraffin. One of the dispersions is compacted to produce a physically stable intermediate compact which is then recompacted with the remaining dispersion to produce a binary compact. The latter is subjected to a vacuum for a period of time at a temperature sufficient to vaporize essentially all of the paraffin, after which the binary compact is infiltrated with liquid silicon and sintered to produce a .beta.-silicon carbide binder uniting the resulting composite.

  • Patent number: 4445437
Abstract: A tamping machine intended for tamping on the open track and below switches and cross overs. It is equipped with independent tamping units arranged on opposite sides of each line of rail and each connected to the chassis by a mechanism comprising: a transverse slideway actuated by a first piston-cylinder unit; a slide block mounted on the slideway and on which the tamping unit is articulated; an arm fastened to the tamping unit; and a connecting rod connecting said arm to the chassis. The slide block of the outer unit is fastened on the slideway while the slide block of the inner unit is movable on said slideway and driven by a second piston-cylinder unit. Thus, the transverse trajectory of the tamping tools is sufficiently flat to avoid a correction of their depth of penetration upon the tamping of long ties.

  • Patent number: 4443395
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for preparing thin sections for the microscopic study of small fragments of rock, dust, microfossils or miscellaneous debris, agglomerated into pellets of special characteristics. The method according to the invention comprises the use of a plate of plastic material containing a series of cells which are filled with an agglomerate consisting of rock fragments surrounded with epoxy resin. Said plate is then heated in an oven to a temperature not exceeding 75.degree. C. for some hours in order to accelerate the hardening of the resin and to obtain said pellets.

  • Patent number: 4436137
Abstract: A thermal insulation system for a window comprising a roller blind carried by a roller blind mechanism which is arranged to be fixed to a window frame above a window to be insulated. The blind is adapted to be detachably connectable to the window frame by means of touch fastener (Velcro) strips carried by the longitudinal side edges and the free transverse edge of the blind and mating touch fastener strips carried by the frame. A mounting mechanism for the roller blind enables it to be selectively displaceable for sealing the upper end of the blind.

  • Patent number: 4433984
Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus and method for rapidly separating particulate solids from a mixed phase solids-gas stream which may be at velocities up to 150 ft./sec. and at high temperature. Specifically, the device is designed for incorporation at the discharge of solid-gas reacting systems having low residence time requirements and carried out in tubular type reactors. Separation is effected by projecting solids by centrifugal force against a bed of solids as the gas phase makes a 180.degree. directional change, said solids changing direction only 90.degree. relative to the incoming stream.

  • Patent number: 4422458
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting respiratory distress is disclosed wherein the increasing force of contraction of the heart, which occurs during a respiratory distress condition is detected and utilized to signal the condition. More particularly, the increasing force of contraction of a patient's heart, which affects the electrical signal generated by an impedance pneumograph may be detected by utilizing the heart beat of the patient to generate a trigger pulse. The trigger pulse is used as a timing means to enable the effects of the heart as registered on the impedance pneumograph, to be detected and compared, with an increase in amplitude of the contractions of the heart indicating a respiratory failure.

  • Patent number: 4421045
Abstract: An automated thread trimming apparatus is provided for use with a sewing machine having a plurality of needles. The apparatus is mounted on the side of the sewing machine away from the sewing machine operator. A pair of blades is provided for each needle of the sewing machine. The blades are adjustably mounted on blade mounting bars. Upon actuation, the blades are positioned to straddle each array of stitches produced by the sewing machine needles. The blade mounting bars are then moved slidably relative to one another so that each pair of blades severs an array of stitches. The blade mounting bars are then moved away from the work table of the sewing machine allowing the next workpiece to be sewn.
