  • Patent number: 5523894
Abstract: A mirror holder support structure for a collapsible rearview mirror assembly on an automobile includes a mirror holder holding a mirror. The mirror holder has a spherical receptacle on a rear surface, with respect to the orientation of the motor vehicle, of the mirror holder. A support assembly which supports the mirror holder has a front casing member and a rear casing member. The support assembly further includes a pivot support having a spherical portion rotatably fitted in the spherical receptacle whereby the mirror holder is swingably supported on the support assembly, the pivot support being integrally formed on a rear surface of the rear casing member. The front and rear casing members are stiffened by a stiffener disposed in a chamber defined between the front and rear casing members. The pivot support and the front casing member are joined to each other by a fastener such as a screw on the axis of the pivot support.

  • Patent number: 5517997
Abstract: An apparatus and method for protecting a body member from damage during a body intrusive procedure in a region adjacent the body member to be protected includes a source of infrared energy introduced into a light guide that is introduced into the body member to be protected; a source of visible light is introduced into the region, this latter source being pulsed at the frame rate of a monitor energized by an infrared sensitive video camera that receives light from such region, the camera being sensitive to infrared energy as well as visible light. In another embodiment of the invention both sources are pulsed in alternation so that the images produced by the different sources are basically emphasized in alternation. A signal source for producing audible and/or visual signals may be provided with a light guide to view the region under investigation. The signal source may be synchronized with the infrared source to protect against false signals produced by the visual light.

  • Patent number: 5458269
Abstract: A method for applying a controlled, adjustable strain and strain rate by use of a break wheel to break a frangible semiconductor wafer around previously placed scribe lines formed along a surface of the wafer. Several embodiments of a break wheel are disclosed. One embodiment uses a pair of spaced profiles engageable on opposite sides of a scribe line on the wafer. Another embodiment uses three laterally spaced contact profiles, the center profile having a smaller radius than that of the two flanking contact profiles. Another embodiment uses a complaint break wheel for applying a resilient breaking force to the wafer in a region straddling the scribe line. All embodiments are used with a tilted surface having a break edge with which the scribe line is aligned prior to the application of the breaking force. The tilted surface is adjustable to provide a variable maximum strain limit.

  • Patent number: 5452141
Abstract: An automobile rearview mirror has a mirror housing having a spherical pivot and a mirror holder having a spherical cavity in which the spherical pivot is rotatably received. The mirror holder comprises a substantially flat panel and an attachment disposed on one side of the panel and defining the spherical cavity therein. The attachment has a gap defined therein radially outwardly of the spherical cavity. A mirror is supported on an opposite side of the panel. The attachment comprises a pair of semicylindrical socket members projecting from the one side of the panel. The semicylindrical socket members have respective inner arcuate walls and respective outer arcuate walls spaced radially outwardly from the inner arcuate walls, respectively. The inner arcuate walls define the spherical cavity therebetween, and the gap is defined between the inner arcuate walls and the outer arcuate walls.

  • Patent number: 5444979
Abstract: A tilt cylinder for tilting an outboard engine has first and second cylinder chambers. A pair of on/off valves is movably disposed in respective fluid passages connected to a hydraulic pump and the first and second cylinder chambers, respectively. The on/off valves are operatively combined with respective shuttle valves which have respective oil passages in facing relationship to the on/off valves, respectively, and respective ball valve bodies for selectively opening the oil passage into communication with each other. When the hydraulic pump is actuated to develop a working oil pressure buildup, one of the on/off valves is opened by the working oil pressure buildup to establish an oil supply passage from the hydraulic pump to one of the first and second chambers, and the other of the on/off valves is opened by the coacting shuttle valve which is moved by the working oil pressure buildup to establish an oil return passage from the other of the first and second chambers to the hydraulic pump.
