Abstract: A novel mechanism is presented that is able to harvest and load and to unload and install large rolls of sod with only one worker. It is equally useful with conventional sods grown on soil as well as sods grown over an impervious surface. The device is attached by a shiftable bracket to the utility mounting plate and hydraulics of a suitable tractor, skid steer loader, or modified fork lift. It consists of a steel spear or prong attached to a clevis that rotates slightly more than 180 degrees. Cones are placed on the hinged spear and these position PVC pipe or other tubing of the same length as the sod roll desired. The spear with cone(s) and tubing is placed at a right angle, either to the left or right, of the direction of the loader and dropped to the surface at the end of a cut sheet of sod. Small protrusions or prongs on the surface of the tubing lightly grasp the sod and begin rolling it up on the tubing.
Abstract: A method for treating a central nervous system or peripheral nervous system cholinergic deficit state in a mammalian organism in need of such treatment, said method comprising administering to said mammal an amount of thalidomide effective in the treatment of a cholinergic deficit state and for a time sufficient to achieve a suitable blood level to treat said cholinergic deficit state.
Abstract: A method for treating insulin-resistant diabetes in mammals which comprises administering to said afflicted animals a prophylactically or therapeutically effective amount of thalidomide.
Abstract: Nonaqueous electrolyte rechargeable cells may contain an excess of negative electrode material to improve the rechargeability. This excess of negative electrode material can form brittle alloys with noncorrosive current collector metals in positive electrodes at low cell voltages. The invention discloses that an excess of current collector material in the positive electrode directly opposite to the negative electrode improves the safety characteristics of the rechargeable cells during overdischarge and multiple voltage reversal abuses.

Abstract: A sulfonated water-soluble or water-dispersible polyester resin composition comprises a prepolymer resin, which prepolymer resin is further reacted with about 0.10 mol to about 0.50 mol of an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid per 100 g of prepolymer resin and a thus-produced resin, terminated by a residue of an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, is reacted with about 0.5 mol to about 1.5 mol of a sulfite per mol of alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid residue to produce a sulfonate-terminated resin. The prepolymer resin is (a) a reaction product of 20-50% by weight of terephthalate polymer, 10-40% by weight of at least one glycol and 5-25% by weight of at least one oxyalkylated polyol, preferably also comprising 20-50% by weight of isophthalic acid or (b) a reaction product of 20-50% by weight of terephthalate polymer, 10-50% by weight of at least one glycol and 20-50% by weight of isophthalic acid.
Abstract: Tablets are formed that release components over time for biological degradation of organic matter such as sewage sludge, petroleum hydrocarbons, pesticides and herbicides. The tablets contain an inner-core of a dormant live microorganism, an inner-coating over the inner-core of water soluble hydroxypropyl methylcellulose or polyethylene glycol, an outer-layer over the inner-coating of sodium sulfate coated sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate particles, and an outer-coating over the outer-layer of water soluble hydroxypropyl methylcellulose or polyethylene glycol. The inner-core may contain a binder such as paraffin, gelatin and dextrose, and the outer-layer may contain additives such as enzymes, buffering agents, sugars and manganese dioxide as an oxidation catalyst. When the tablets are placed in an aqueous environment, layers of the tablets dissolve over time releasing components therein.
Abstract: A device which cuts sods that are grown over plastic sheeting without cutting or damaging the plastic sheeting which is then retained in place to be used again for subsequent crops. The cutter performs four functions: (1) it inserts a vibrating lifting plate between the plastic and the sod and separates and lifts the sod off the plastic; (2) it conveys the sod to the cutting mechanism; (3) it cleanly cuts the sod; and (4) it leaves the plastic undamaged. After cutting, the sod can be harvested by a roller attached behind the cutting mechanism so that the cutting and rolling are done in one operation or the rolling can be done separately at a later time. The mechanism can be arranged in multiples on a toolbar; and the cutter can be attached to conventional sod harvesting equipment with only slight modification.
Abstract: A process for preparing shaped polybenzimidazole sintered products having increased resistance to dimensional modification by absorption of water and the products prepared therefrom.
Abstract: Novel choline salts of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory carboxylic acids and anti-lipidemic carboxylic acids are described. Additionally, blends of choline salts with the above carboxylic acids are also described. The new salts and compositions offer new therapeutic advantages.
Abstract: A novel method is described for growing tall fescue sods on a solid base in large rolls. Whole culm straw is placed 1-2 inches deep over the solid base, typically plastic sheeting. Thirty to forty cubic yards of composted materials are then applied to the straw, filling the voids and interstices to produce a coherent matrix. This is seeded with tall fescue, then irrigated, fertilized, and mowed in a conventional manner. Unharvested wheat seed left in the straw germinates along with the tall fescue and forms a vigorous primary rooting system which rapidly effects a bona fide sod about one-half inch thick and approximately one-half the weight of a conventional mineral sod. The synthetic sod is harvested in large rolls, typically as much as five feet wide and comprising 20-50 square yards. These big rolls are laid at the installation site by the grading tractor, obviating the need for a fork lift, pallets, and laying crew, as used in conventional sodding.
Abstract: Novel salts of 1-adamantamine are formed by reacting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory carboxylic acids with 1-adamantamine. Formulations of 1-adamantamine hydrochloride and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory carboxylic acids are also described.
Abstract: New blood substitutes are described having osmolarities greater than normal blood. The new blood substitues typically comprise a physiologically acceptable fluid electrolyte solution, a physiologically acceptable agent capable of increasing the osmolarity of the blood substitute to a value greater than normal blood, an oxygen carrying substance, and a sufficient amount of water to achieve the desired osmolarity. The blood substitutes of the present invention have osmolarities in the range of 500-800 milliosmoles per liter.
