Abstract: Light, flexible tubes are placed around optical fibers extending from the end of a cable jacket. A water impervious plug encases the end of the cable jacket and a portion of the flexible tubes. Couplers are attached to the light waveguide terminal ends and the optical couplers and the plug are placed in an opto-electronic equipment closure. The assembly is designed for use with cable television system aerial closures.
Abstract: A method of preparing for polishing the end face of a fiber optic connector having an optical fiber held by a ferrule. A laser beam removes the portion of the optical fiber tip projecting beyond a predetermined distance. The beam has a spot size selected so as to also remove excess epoxy.
Abstract: A light waveguide cable contains a layer of U-shaped carriers around a central core. Each U-shaped carrier contains a light waveguide fiber, bundle, ribbon, or ribbon stack. Carrier legs have a predetermined hinge line at a distance from the carrier base greater than the thickness of the light waveguide fiber, bundle, ribbon or ribbon stack. The carrier legs may have a smaller thickness or a concavity at the hinge line.

Abstract: A cable assembly for attachment to an entry port of an optical enclosure. The assembly includes a plug for an end of an optical cable in a sealed housing having a single rigid tube and a single sealed nut. Connectorized optical fibers or an optical ribbon extend from the plug into the equipment enclosure.
Abstract: Disclosed is a network interface device for connecting network wiring to a subscriber's wiring at a subscriber's premises, the network interface device having a door covering a test jack, with means for connecting the network wiring to the subscriber wiring when the door is closed and connecting the network wiring to the test jack when the door is open.
Abstract: A station protector module contains telephone company terminals and subscriber terminals. The module has apparatus for grounding the module in a network interface device and also has means for grounding upon extended grounding current flow through a surge protector in the module. The grounding apparatus becomes operative upon the melting of a fusible means. The surge protector is a single component bidirectional voltage sensitive switch.

Abstract: A method of making a strippable tight buffered cable is disclosed, the cable comprising an optical waveguide fiber, a first protective coat circumscribing and in contact with the outer surface of the optical waveguide an interfacial layer circumscribing and in contact with the external surface of the first protective coating composed of particles of solid lubricant held together with a cross-linked film-forming binder, and a second protective coating circumscribing the external surface of the interfacial layer. Apparatus for making the strippable cable is also disclosed.
Abstract: Disclosed is a device for bridging a cable over an edge of an exposed flange. An bridge has a first side containing one or more slots capable of receiving the edge of the flange, and a second side curved to allow a cable to pass over the device without kinking or allowing a bend radius less than that of the second side.
Abstract: Disclosed is a fiber optic mechanical splice having one or more grooves transverse to the groove in which the optical fibers lie to dissipate air trapped in index matching material from the junction point of the optical fibers.

Abstract: A light waveguide cable having powder embedded in the outer surfaces of plastic material such as central members, open ribbon carriers, or buffer tubes. Powder is deposited during the extrusion or after subsequent reheating.
Abstract: Disclosed is a compression tester which is designed to simulate as closely as possible the low temperature conditions a cable is subjected to in an outdoor environment. Axially aligned composite sample members are compressed longitudinally while fitted in a cylindrically enclosed space in a specially designed sample die assembly. Testing may take place in an environmental chamber.
Abstract: A surge arrester for telephone lines comprises a threaded metal enclosure for insertion into a threaded well of a station protector. The protective element within the threaded metal enclosure is a voltage sensitive solid state switch comprising a semiconductor chip sandwiched between two flat electrodes. One electrode is in contact with a metal plate which is in contact with a solder disc. The other electrode is in contact with a metal post disposed in, and extending through, a plastic spacer within the threaded metal enclosure.
Abstract: A method for centering a crosshead extrusion die to a tip by fixing the positions of the tip and die while a sizing probe is inserted into the tip and die.

Abstract: Disclosed is an optical transmission element for a light waveguide cable. At least one light waveguide is contained within a tube comprising a thermoplastic polyoxymethylene homopolymer or a copolymer thereof.
Abstract: A pair of rigid metallic clips is inserted over containment numbers in a fiberoptic connector coupling. Rigid leg members mounted on the clips extend along latching members of the containment members, thereby limiting displacement of the latching members owing to spring pressure in connector sleeves joined by the connector coupling.
Abstract: A telephone network interface enclosure comprises a base and hinge pin integrally molded together as one piece. The enclosure includes a cover and hinge hooks also integrally molded together as one piece. The hinge pin and hinge hooks fit together to form a hinge. There is a hinge shield which, together with the hinge hooks, substantially totally cover the hinge pin.
