  • Patent number: 4811635
Abstract: An improved powered pipe tong has a frame with a generally central opening and a drive ring with pipe gripping dies arranged for rotation in the opening, about an axis. A fluid powered motor and associated gearing powers the drive ring in either direction about the axis. The dies are closed on pipe to be rotated by energy supplied by a fluid powered ram mounted in the frame and actuated to extend into the drive ring to force pipe gripping dies into gripping contact with pipe. Once the dies are forced into gripping contact with the pipe they are locked in position and the fluid powered ram is withdrawn into the frame to allow the drive ring to rotate with gripped pipe. The lock that holds the dies in closed gripping position while the drive ring rotates can be released in any position of rotating parts. The drive ring is then rotated into position for the ram to again apply force to drive ring mounted parts.

  • Patent number: 4807709
Abstract: A hydraulic drill string jar is powered and actuated by drilling fluid pressure controlled from the earth surface. By selective manipulation of drilling fluid flow, the jar can be conditioned to operate in drilling mode to avoid activation of the jars while normal drilling and fluid flow activities take place. By different fluid flow manipulations, the jar is conditioned to operate in the jarring mode. In the jarring mode, the jars will axially shock the drill string each time the flow rate is reduced below a preselected amount and then increased to a higher preselected amount.

  • Patent number: 4770258
Abstract: A length of drill string, or a sub, functions as a body to which an encircling sleeve is rotationally and axially secured. The sleeve is arranged to permit some radial movement on the body and is spring biased in one radial directiion. A radial projection of some axial length extends from the sleeve in the biased direction to engage the well bore wall. During drill string rotation, the projection engages a near side wall more forcefully than other parts of the well bore periphery. The forceful engagement between projection and wall deranges the tendency for a curved drill string centerline to lie in a stationary plane when the drill bit has a tendency to depart from an original course while drilling. The bias allows the sleeve to be pushed toward a more centralized position on the body but the fluid damping inherent by changing clearances between sleeve and body, while the tool is immersed in drilling fluid, retards the centralizing movement.

  • Patent number: 4759728
Abstract: A junction box and battery jumper cable combination for use on vehicles with storage batteries. A cup shaped junction box has a flanged lip for mounting through body panel holes larger than the cup below the lip but smaller than the lip. Pull-in lugs on a screw actuated element are slidable along slots in the cup wall to approach the lip when the screw is actuated to secure the lip and, hence, the junction box to the body. The screw on each pull-in lug is accessible inside the junction box and access to the back side of the mounting area is not essential. Jumper cables adapted to work with the junction box has polarity selective cooperating terminals to assure correct polarity of circuitry. The jumper cables have a spring clamp equipped extension cables to mate with the end of the jumper cables to serve vehicles not equipped with the improved junction box. The junction box is adapted for wiring permanently to the host vehicle battery.

  • Patent number: 4753633
Abstract: A fluid stream solids separator provides a curved flow confining chamber to cause heavier constituents in a fluid stream, or slurry, flowing in the resulting curved path in the chamber to migrate radially outward with time and distance travelled. At least one skimmer blade is provided to protrude some distance into the stream from the radially outer flow boundary. The blade skims a strata of the heavier constituents from the stream and directs skimmed products into a separate exit flow path. A series of skimmer blades can be used to skim consecutive strata from the main stream. Fluid flow confining chambers of both mushroom and cylindrical shape are provided. Adjustment means, optionally provided, move the input guiding surfaces to change velocity and move the skimmer blades to change the thickness of strata extracted from the main stream.

  • Patent number: 4721156
Abstract: A well clean out apparatus of the reciprocating pump, recirculating, type has two debris entrapment chambers below and one fluid chamber above the pump. The pump piston has a stack of flat washers to function as piston packing. The washers are axially and radially loose fitting to allow some movement to enable particles to work past each washer to avoid sand jamming. The washer stack, collectively, resists fluid by-pass around the piston. The pump is inverted and fluid flows through the piston rod to increase fluid velocity in the piston vicinity.

  • Patent number: 4715453
Abstract: A body, functioning as a length of drill string, has an eccentric roller mounted for rotation around the body. The roller and body have cooperating cam surfaces that cause the roller to reciprocate axially when the body rotates relative to the roller. In use, the extended radius of the eccentric roller engages the near side of the well bore walland tends to become stationary relative to earth. The forced axial motion of the retarded roller induces some peripheral motion at each turn of the drill string. The eccentric roller turns freely with the drill string when the extended radius is adjacent the far side of the well bore wall. The extended radius of the roller tends to spend most of the drilling time between the drill string and the near side, or low side, of the well bore to aid in well bore deviation control.

  • Patent number: 4715253
Abstract: A power tong has two powered rings mounted on the tong frame for independent rotation, one ring, a reel carrier, carries a plurality of spring rewind line storage reels. Independent lines extend from each reel and each line is anchored to the second powered ring. An open gap, or throat, extends to the tong center to receive pipe when the lines are all recovered into the reels. The reel carrier ring is rotated to wrap the lines in a spiral pattern around pipe. The second ring is driven to pull the lines and the reel carrier ring is braked to apply tailing tension to the lines but does then turn in sympathy with the second ring to turn pipe. To recover the lines, the second ring is stopped and the reel carrier ring is driven in the direction to allow lines to return to the reels as they unwrap from the pipe.

  • Patent number: 4688649
Abstract: A mechanical jar used primarily on drill strings, in earth boreholes, to aid in freeing drill strings stuck in a well bore. A telescoping drill string component is constrained in a selected telescoped condition by a biased lock until enough axial stress is applied to the telescoped jar to release the lock. Energy stored in the stressed length of drill string then moves rapidly to strike a solid limit to the telescoping travel. The inertia of the moving part of the drill string applies a shock to the stationary, downwardly continuing part of the drill string. The shock is to aid in releasing the stuck string situation. The tension required to release the lock is adjustable, as a design alternative, by applying torque to the drill string. The jar can, by design alternative, be used to strike in either or both axial directions.

  • Patent number: 4631987
Abstract: A power tong having a frame with an open throat at one end and a pipe gripping mechanism situated for rotation within the frame, carrying three pipe gripping dies about equally spaced around the longitudinal axis of the pipe. Only one of the pipe gripping dies is driven toward the pipe by cam action of the rotating mechanism. The other two pipe gripping dies pivot and achieve their pipe loading capability from the action of the cam driven pipe gripping die. Once the rotation of the pipe has been achieved, the rotating mechanism returns to such a position that the open throat of the rotating mechanism coincides with the open throat of the frame, whereby the pipe, having been spun, can then be released.
