  • Patent number: 4100915
Abstract: A solar heater having a reflector which focuses sun rays onto a solar heat-absorbing collector. The collector consists of a transparent vacuum flask with a novel highly efficient collector cell including heat-transfer transparent fluid therein. The collector comprises a center support in the form of a metal inlet pipe and a series of frusto-conical heat-absorbing cones and intervening sleeves clamped to the pipe. The cones are formed of thin aluminum and have highly polished reflective interior sides. The exterior sides of the cups as well as the sleeves are blackened. The reflector is arranged to focus the rays perpendicularly to the flask so that the heat-absorbing exterior sides of the cones which have an angle of incidence reflect the rays axially of the tube into the interior sides of the adjacent cones, which being arranged at preferably 45.degree. to the axis of the tube, reflect the rays against the intermediate black sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4091957
Abstract: A rectangular tape seal end closure for closing pour openings in a round end panel of a pressurized container wherein the tape extends to the circular peripheral seaming chuck guide groove. The tape has a pull ring pull folded over the body of the tape and normally would form corners therewith which would encroach upon the chuck guide groove. In this invention, these corners are cut off to clear the chuck groove and novel ribbing reinforcements are provided which reinforce the body of the tape to resist blow-out and which bridge the cut off areas and function to strengthen the tape to counter notch-effect stress concentrations because of cutting off of the corners.

  • Patent number: 4084721
Abstract: Improved easy open means for containers. Especially adapted to those used for liquids, including carbonated beverages, and permitting drinking from the container or pouring out contents. An important feature is attachment of closure to container after opening to avoid litter. Main feature is an openable segment in the top defined by a score line that extends almost all around its periphery, but interrupted at one point by an unscored section which provides integral hingeable attachment means to secure the segment to the top within the container after opening. Opening of the segment is accomplished by a manually operated elongated leverage lift tab which is hingeably secured to the top by a rivet which is positioned just outside of the segment and close to the score line. The outer longer lift end of the lift tab extends over the container top beyond the segment, and the shorter inner end extends partially over the segment, and comprises a downward pressure exerting extension.

  • Patent number: 4084722
Abstract: An improved child resistant end closure wherein most of the pull tab for an easy opening end is mounted within a bead formed on the end panel which obstructs access to the ring or lift portion of the tab and pevents grasping and lifting it. The tab and/or the end panel are slightly bowed in such manner that the tab upon fastening by the rivet to the end panel is sprung toward the end panel so that the ring portion of the tab is biased toward the panel below the bead. The shape of the bead and the ring or grasping portion provides a digitally operable structure which permits an adult to insert his nail between the tab and external bead to lift the ring while flexing the end panel so that the ring may be further lifted to break free the tab hinge and then break the score defining the openable segment of the end panel, or alternatively the lift portion may be pried up by a tool entered into a slot provided beneath the ring.

  • Patent number: 4079668
Abstract: A simplified heavy-duty press having a bed and a support head mounted from the press bed for limited vertical movement under predetermined spring preload. The entire drive (less motor) and rams are carried from the press head and these components are movable away from the bed when the tools between the ram and bed encounter an obstruction beyond the preload. The preload limits maximum operative force that will be transmitted in the mechanisms where precise control of the components/dimensions may be difficult to maintain because of manufacturing limitations or because of thermal expansion.

  • Patent number: 4075938
Abstract: A hollow shirred casing stick is provided having the terminal pleats of one end thereof twisted into a cylindrical configuration which is implanted within said hollow stick to form an end closure. The end closure may be formed by twisting successive terminal pleats into the bore of the stick about a rotating mandrel advanced thereinto. A device is provided for forming the closure including a rotating and translating mandrel having retractable pickup means and gripping means, whereby a cylindrical closure may be formed thereabout, and the mandrel withdrawn, without disturbing the closure formed.

  • Patent number: 4061321
Abstract: A novel holder for work pieces, particularly for holding picture frame pieces in which the adjoining mitered ends of the frame pieces are brought together. The inventive concept resides in providing a mechanism which permits primary adjustment of the jaws in such manner that the pieces are easy to insert and wherein as the last increment of movement of the jaws they tightly clamp the pieces and move them endwise toward each other in perfect alignment and after nailing; the mechanism also quickly releases the joined frame pieces because of the electrical toggle linkage employed.

  • Patent number: 4061243
Abstract: An easy opening end closure is arranged and adapted to accommodate pouring of products with varying viscosities. The end panel includes a number of portions disposed to obstruct displacement of the tab and thereby limit opening of the closure to a predetermined segment thereof. The portions are deflectable to a non-obstructing position by application of sufficient force thereagainst, enabling the user to determine the size of the pour opening by controlling the number of segments opened.

  • Patent number: 4059958
Abstract: An internal combustion engine of the spark or diesel ignition type and having an anti-pollution arrangement for the reduction of the products of incomplete combustion and crankcase evaporation and said arrangement including a turbine adapted to receive exhaust gases and being connected to the engine through an overriding clutch to drive the turbine yet allowing for overriding faster rotation of the turbine through secondary ignition of the exhaust or other unburned gases. The turbine includes a fuel supply to aid in ignition of exhaust gases and may include a fuel supply with an aromatic indicator fluid which loses its aroma upon oxidation at a predetermined temperature thereby indicating if the turbine temperature is high enough to completely eliminate unburned exhaust and other gases without recycling said gases through the engine.

  • Patent number: 4055134
Abstract: An easy opening end closure is formed with annular, double folded band adjacent the chuck wall. A weakening line defining a removable panel portion is formed in the center segment of the fold so that the folded edges of the single band provide smooth protective surfaces on both the ledge and the removable panel portion. This disclosure also relates to a method for forming the above described easy-opening end closure wherein the weakening line is formed in the end panel prior to complete formation of the folded band.

  • Patent number: 4053131
Abstract: A novel paint can holder or hanger comprising a bar having a vertical body portion with a furcated lower end defining an inverted V-shaped paint can lip-receiving slot and having an inner leg adapted to extend into the open end of the can and an outer leg overlapping the outer side of the can. The inner and outer legs have opposing notches on their inner edges for receiving the inner and outer edges of the lip. The vertical body portion has on its outer side a bail-entrapping notch arrangement which serves as a fulcrum for the holder when the holder is lifted by handle at the upper end of the body portion, the handle extending to the axial center line of the can. A flexible tether is secured to the handle and is adapted to be looped over a rung of a ladder or the like.

  • Patent number: 4046306
Abstract: A composite end panel is adhesively bonded to the sidewall of a can or similar container with the end panel periphery overlying a portion of the sidewall outer surface. A plastic band or hoop is placed on the sidewall, overlapping the edge of the end panel, and shrunk in place through the application of heat. The band seals the cut edge and prevents wicking while insuring that the end panel is retained in position. A fillet of sealant may be applied to the inside of the container at the juncture of the sidewall and the end panel.
