    Abstract: A safety needle assembly for an intravenous fitting which protects against inadvertent touch contact with a piercing element after use. The assembly includes a piercing element such as a sharpened needle cannula or a blunt ended cannula that is mounted within a carrier member. A protective shield component is provided which is axially slidable relative to the carrier member and configured to attach to an intravenous fitting. The protective shield and carrier member may feature a guide assembly for guiding the shield between a pre-use, injection position and a post-use, locked position wherein inadvertent touch contact with the distal end of the piercing element is avoided. A releasable locking assembly may also be incorporated to releasably retain the protective shield in its pre-use position so as to facilitate attachment of the safety needle assembly with the intravenous fitting.

    Abstract: A fluid transfer device for accessing fluid from vials and ampoules includes a cannula assembly including a cannula having a lumen therethrough connected to a hub having an open proximal end. A filling straw includes a proximal end, a distal end, and a passageway therethrough. The straw further includes a needle portion at the distal end and a shaft portion between the needle portion and the proximal end. A cutting edge is provided at the distal end of the needle portion for piercing a vial stopper. The cannula assembly is removably engaged with the filling straw so that the open proximal end of the hub is in fluid communication with the passageway of the filling straw. An elongate shield having an open proximal end, an open distal end and a side wall therebetween defining a recess in the shield. The shield is removably connected to the straw so that the shaft portion and the needle portion of the straw are contained within the recess. A seal plug having a proximal end and a distal end is provided.

    Abstract: This invention relates to an improved guarded surgical scalpel having a movable guard that can be retracted to expose the blade and that can be extended to cover the sharp cutting edge of the blade. The guard is also mounted for rotatable movement with respect to the handle. A blade carrier is mounted to the guard to allow relative longitudinal movement between the guard and the blade carrier. The blade carrier is also removably mounted to the handle. This mounting arrangement for the handle, guard and blade carrier allows the guard and blade carrier to be rotated away from the handle so the surfaces of the handle, guard and blade carrier can be exposed. This facilitates cleaning of the guarded surgical scalpel after use.

    Abstract: A shieldable syringe assembly includes a syringe barrel having opposed proximal and distal ends and an annular groove extending inwardly near said distal end. A locking collar is mounted on said distal end of said syringe barrel and includes a plurality of barbs engaged in the groove. Outer portions of the locking collar aligned with the barbs define a collet that is inwardly deformable. A rigid safety shield is telescoped over the locking collar and the syringe barrel. The safety shield can be slid from a proximal position to a distal position. Interior portions of the safety shield are configured to lockingly engage the collet when the safety shield is in the distal position. The collet engaging portions of the safety shield deform the collet inwardly into tight gripping engagement in the groove on the syringe barrel for preventing separation of the safety shield and the locking collar from the syringe barrel.

Structure is also provided for automatically locking the needle shield in the closed needle protecting position when the needle shield is pivoted into the closed position.

A safety shield is positioned over the syringe barrel for telescoping movement from a proximal position where the needle cannula is exposed to a distal position where the syringe safety shield protectively surrounds the needle cannula. The safety shield is rotatable with respect to the barrel when the safety shield is in its proximal position. The safety shield includes an inside surface having at least one inwardly directed projection sized and positioned to pass through the recess in the collar when the safety shield is rotated with respect to the barrel to align the projection and the recess. When alignment is achieved the safety shield can be moved form the proximal position to the distal position.

A tubular shield is releasably engaged in an intermediate position on the syringe barrel such that distal portions of the shield surround the needle cannula. A removable or frangible sterile seal is secured over the extreme distal end of the shield. The cap and the seal may be removed immediately prior to use. The shield may then be moved proximally into a proximal position which exposes the needle cannula for use. The shield may then be moved distally and locked into distal position where the needle cannula is protectively surrounded.
