Abstract: This disclosure relates to a surgical tool that employs a jet of inert gas passed through a direct current electric arc which imparts thermal energy to the gas jet which is then ejected from a small orifice at a temperature sufficient to simultaneously incise and cauterize living tissue. The tool includes a tool body having a tubular anode therein with said anode having a cathode and cathode assembly therein, said anode and cathode being concentric with respect to one another and spaced from one another. Said tool body also includes a sheath therein between said anode and said tool body so that coolant is caused to flow in separate paths. In addition, a plunger is also provided to move the cathode longitudinally into contact with the anode so that, upon release and retraction of the cathode, an electrical arc is established so that inert gas flowing through said arc is ejected fron the tool as a hot plasma.
Abstract: A particular compound, namely 5-Thio-D-glucose, and use thereof, is disclosed herein for control of body weight. 5-Thio-D-glucose is administered to thereby cause loss of weight without disrupting normal eating habits, the 5-Thio-D-glucose reducing carbohydrate assimilation to thereby cause reduction in calorie intake.
Abstract: A random signal flaw detection system is disclosed that provides enhanced system sensitivity and/or increased range capabilities as well as being capable of improved resolution where necessary or desired. The system includes a generator which produces random electrical signals which are converted at a transducer into ultrasound for transmission into a test object. The reflected signal is received at a transducer and converted to an electrical signal which is then correlated with a delayed sample of the transmitted signal with the output being indicative of the sensed flaws in the test object.
Abstract: A carbohydrate bonded support for use in a chromatographic system, and a method for preparation of such a support is disclosed herein. An inorganic support has a thin layer of carbohydrate or carbohydrate derivative covalently linked to the surface so that the thus formed support has excellent mechanical stability as well as the ability to avoid adsorbing or denaturing sensitive biological compounds, the carbohydrate bonded support thus combining the advantages of known supports without also incorporating the disadvantages thereof.
