  • Patent number: 6304398
Abstract: An apparatus and method of reducing the size of a servo burst and thus increasing the disc surface available for data storage is accomplished by uniquely encoding track information in the gray code of a servo burst on a disc. Each track has a unique sequential track identification number assigned to it. A plurality of sets of servo sectors on each track are encoded with a modulo operation of the track identification number for the track each using a unique modulus. Preferably the sectors are grouped into two sets, i.e., even numbered sectors on each track are modulo encoded with a first modulo operation of the track identification number for the track using a first modulus and odd numbered servo sectors on each track are modulo encoded with a second modulo operation of the track identification number for the track using a second modulus. Decoding the absolute track address is accomplished by decoding the modulo numbers and comparing the even sector modulo numbers to the odd numbered sector modulo numbers.

  • Patent number: 6207294
Abstract: An explosive laminated cutting tool which provides a self sharpening edge. The improved cutting tool s preferably comprised of two softer metals adhered to a hard central layer forming the cutting edge, with the central layer being made of such a material as tungsten carbide. The central laminate layer is preferably perforated to allow the outer layers to fuse through the perforations to adhere to one another, thus creating a strongly bonded laminated cutting structure which may be self sharpening. A method for manufacturing the cutting tool is also described. Another embodiment comprises a laminate wherein one of the layers has a plurality of recesses in the surface facing another layer. The recesses are filled with particles such as tungsten carbide or diamond. When the layers are explosively welded together, the particles are fused in the weld area.

  • Patent number: 6144308
Abstract: A tilt compensation method, circuit and apparatus utilizes a two axis tilt sensor or two single axis tilt sensors for alerting, a user and/or compensating a surveying instrument for off vertical alignment above a reference point when the instrument support is free to move about the reference point, e.g., when mounted on a monopod support. The sensor comprises a cell having a central electrode and four peripheral electrodes spaced 90 degrees apart around the central electrode. Fluid in the cell chamber changes the conductance of the electrodes with reference to the central electrode. The cell is mounted to the support or to the instrument itself. A microprocessor preferably provides a square wave drive signal selectively to alternate pairs of the opposing electrodes through tristate buffers while at the same time the microprocessor provides a channel select signal to the gate of the tristate buffers to float the idle electrodes.

  • Patent number: 6065462
Abstract: A closed loop wire saw loop, a method for making the closed wire saw loop, and an apparatus and method for slicing a work piece, in particular, a polysilicon or single crystal silicon ingot, utilizing a closed loop of diamond impregnated wire in which the work piece (or ingot) is rotated about its longitudinal axis as the diamond wire is driven orthogonally to it and advanced from a position adjoining the outer diameter ("OD") of the ingot towards its inner diameter ("ID"). In this manner, the diamond wire cuts through the work piece at a substantially tangential point to the circumference of the cut instead of through up to the entire diameter of the piece and single crystal silicon ingots of 300 mm to 400 mm or more may be sliced into wafers relatively quickly, with minimal `kerf` loss and less extensive follow-on lapping operations. The closed wire saw loop is made by squaring and welding the wire ends together and then twice heat treating the weld at about 1500 F.

  • Patent number: 6064330
Abstract: An apparatus and method for accurately determining a target distance in adverse weather conditions utilizing both LASER and RADAR is disclosed. The radar signals are used to determine an approximate range which is then used as a gating window for the determination of which laser reflection is from the actual target as opposed to a reflection from the atmospheric interference. The method basically comprises the steps of initiating a radar pulse in the direction of a target and receiving a reflection, transmitting a laser signal and receiving a plurality of reflections, determining an approximate range based on the radar signals, and using this approximate range to ascertain which of the laser reflections is from the target. This determination is preferably made by generating a gating signal and gate width from the radar signals and passing the set of laser range signals through the gate to eliminate the false signals and select the signal that survives the gate as the accurate target range.

  • Patent number: 6055490
Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring coefficients of retroreflectance of retroreflective surfaces such as road signs involves use of a modified light based range finder. The apparatus includes a power attenuation factor data base which relates pulse width of received pulses to power attenuation of the transmitted pulses. The range finder calculates target range based on time of flight of light pulses. The apparatus automatically calculates the absolute coefficient of retroreflectance for an unknown reflective surface being measured by comparison of the measurement to a reading with the same instrument of a known reflectance standard.

  • Patent number: 6004243
Abstract: A system, apparatus and method for interactively controlling the rate of real-time video playback and audio track playback is disclosed. A preferred embodiment of the apparatus is an interactive exercise video system which utilizes a bicycle, a bicycle wheel speed detector, an interface unit connected to the wheel speed detector and to a conventional game controller connected to a conventional video game CD player, which is in turn connected to a TV. A prerecorded video CD is played in the player in which the display rate of video images is altered via software embedded on the CD such that the speed of the video is changed by the level of activity on the exercise device. The variation of the video frame rate is accomplished by modifying the duration time stamp on each video frame which is used by the player control program so as to change the sequential time at which each frame is called for display by the conventional video player.

  • Patent number: 5938717
Abstract: A system for automatically capturing an image of a moving vehicle and recording data parameters, such as date, time, speed operator, location, etc. on the image. A capture window that comprises a predetermined range of distances of the system from the moving vehicle can be set by the operator so that the image of the moving vehicle is automatically captured when it enters the capture window. The capture window distance can be entered manually through a keyboard or automatically using the laser speed gun. Automatic focusing is provided using distance information from the laser speed gun. A database is included to allow the user to search for specified parameters. Data records can be flagged for issuance of citations. A separate office unit is disclosed for retrieving and sorting data records so that field units are not occupied with such tasks. The office unit can be separately connected to licensing databases to retrieve information for issuance of citations.

  • Patent number: 5912696
Abstract: An adaptive multidimensional media asset rating system and method for selective play of a media asset includes an N-dimensional rating vector encoded into the leader portion or meta-data portion of a media asset. This N dimensional rating vector has a magnitude value for each of the N dimensions and is assigned to each asset by the asset producer. A user programmable asset filter system, responsive to the encoded vector, is incorporated into or added on to the media asset playing device. The rating vector is then read from the asset by the filter system in or connected to the media asset playing device such as a TV, videotape recorder/player, radio receiver CD player, or other reception device prior to processing the asset for viewing. The user programs into the filter system coupled to the asset player or reception device a threshold N dimensional preference vector which has a magnitude value for each of the N dimensions.
