    Abstract: An adaptive parasitic array antenna system having properties of directive gain, self-pointing and interference rejection is provided including an adaptive parasitic array antenna comprising at least one active element and one or more parasitic elements coupled to controlled impedances (CI). The system further comprises a transceiver, a content-based optimization criterion computation module (CBOCCM), and a control variable optimizer (CVO). The CBOCCM receives a signal waveform from the active element through the transceiver, and computes an optimization criterion (OC) based on the content of the received signal. The optimization criterion is coupled to the CVO, which adaptively computes one or more control variables (CV), which are coupled to the controlled impedances CI in order to adjust the beampattern created by the adaptive parasitic array antenna.

The associated software has a plurality of features to optimize efficient use of the limited keyboard space and encourage the use of the device by thumb-based data entry through the thumbwheel and/or through a combination of minimal number of keystrokes. Software features include international character scrolling, and auto-capitalization. The keys on the device keyboard are optimally shaped and configured for thumb-based input. In addition, the thumbwheel is inclined between the front and a side edge of the device so as to be reachable by either the thumb or index finger of the user's hand at the side edge of the device.

    Abstract: A phase locked loop (PLL) is provided for synchronizing a PLL output signal to a plurality of reference clock signals and for aligning the PLL output signal with a distributed frame signal. The PLL includes a slew controlled frame aligner for controlling the phase deviation in the feedback signal of the PLL to thereby control the phase deviation of the PLL output so as to meet a particular phase deviation timing requirement. The slew controlled frame aligner includes a ramp generator for generating a plurality of digital add and skip pulses that are coupled to the feedback counter in the PLL to thereby control the equivalent analog phase added to or subtracted from the feedback signal.

    Abstract: A direct digital frequency synthesizer and a hybrid frequency synthesizer combining the direct digital frequency synthesizer and a phase locked loop is provided. The direct digital frequency synthesizer includes a phase accumulator that is configured to generate a discrete phase signal. Spurious phase modulation in the discrete phase signal is reduced by a noise shaper, and the output of the noise shaper is then used to address a phase-to-amplitude translator. The phase-to-amplitude translator generates a discrete waveform which is converted to a continuous waveform by a digital to analog converter. The hybrid frequency synthesizer uses a mixer to combine a reference frequency generated by a reference source and a DDFS output signal generated by a direct digital frequency synthesizer. The output from the mixer is then coupled to the input of a phase locked loop which multiplies the mixer output to generate the frequency synthesizer output.

The method produces very smooth semiconductor wafers by performing the steps of depositing an epitaxial layer on a wafer substrate, oxidizing a top portion of the epitaxial layer, and removing the oxidized top portion. As a result, the wafer's surface presents little or no microsteps thereon.

    Abstract: A power back-up unit is provided which includes a primary power source that is connected to a plurality of loads, including a critical load and a non-critical load. A secondary power source is also provided. A first low voltage disconnect is electrically connected to the secondary power source and the critical load. A second low voltage disconnect is electrically connected to the secondary power source and the non-critical load. In one embodiment, the second low voltage disconnect disconnects the non-critical load upon loss of the primary power source. In another embodiment, the second low voltage disconnect has a voltage threshold that is greater than the voltage threshold of the first low voltage disconnect such that the non-critical load is disconnected by the second low voltage disconnect prior to the critical load being disconnected by the first low voltage disconnect.

The user of the handheld device is then able to manually select certain portions of data through a user interface. Once the selection is complete, a series of comments are returned to the gateway device from the handheld device so that a subsequent viewing corresponds only to that information selected by the user.

    Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for retrieving information from a database. Initially, the documents within the database are divided into mutually exclusive subdocuments that generally correspond to paragraphs of text. The present invention further creates a second set of subdocuments that overlap adjacent paragraphs of text. In particular, the location of the overlapping subdocuments depends on the size of the initial paragraphs. This second set of overlapping subdocuments are scored just as the mutually exclusive subdocuments are scored. The scores from both the mutually exclusive and overlapping subdocuments are used in ranking the relevance of documents to a query. The use of both sets of subdocument scores improves the effectiveness of the scoring algorithm.

    Abstract: An adaptive noise suppression system includes an input A/D converter, an analyzer, a filter, and a output D/A converter. The analyzer includes both feed-forward and feedback signal paths that allow it to compute a filtering coefficient, which is input to the filter. In these paths, feed-forward signal are processed by a signal to noise ratio estimator, a normalized coherence estimator, and a coherence mask. Also, feedback signals are processed by a auditory mask estimator. These two signal paths are coupled together via a noise suppression filter estimator. A method according to the present invention includes active signal processing to preserve speech-like signals and suppress incoherent noise signals. After a signal is processed in the feed-forward and feedback paths, the noise suppression filter estimator then outputs a filtering coefficient signal to the filter for filtering the noise out of the speech and noise digital signal.
