  • Patent number: 5551942
Abstract: A centrifuge comprising a yoke element that rotates about a rotational axis and a processing chamber having an axis. The processing chamber includes a bowl element, a spool element, and a mechanism for joining the spool and bowl elements for relative movement between a mutually cooperating position for centrifugal processing and a mutually separated position for loading. A hinge attaches the processing chamber to the yoke element for pivotal movement between an operating position and an access position. In the operating position, the spool and bowl elements are in their mutually cooperating position and oriented for rotation with the yoke element about the rotational axis. In the access position, the processing chamber axis lies outside the axis of rotation and the spool and bowl elements are oriented for movement from their mutually cooperating position into their mutually separated position.

  • Patent number: 5549458
Abstract: A peristaltic pumping apparatus includes a pump rotor carrying a roller and a drive mechanism for rotating the rotor. The drive mechanism includes a carrier for holding the pump rotor. The apparatus includes a release pin mechanism carried on the pump rotor and exposed to access by a user. The release pin mechanism is movable by the user between a first position that connects the pump rotor to the carrier and a second position that disconnects the pump rotor from the carrier. Placing the release pin mechanism in the second position allows quick separation of the pump rotor from the drive mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5549540
Abstract: An insert nestingly receivable within a centrifuge cup to support a pair of fluid containing bags therein is formed from a pair of concave shapes having an upper end and a lower end and which are centrally adhered together in back-to-back relationship. The shapes together with an interior surface of the centrifuge cup together form a pair of elliptically shaped chambers for supporting a pair of the bags within the cup. A pair of pins extend through the concave shapes and extend outwardly therefrom. The bags each are provided with a pair of spaced-apart holes to receive the pins, thereby supporting the bags within the elliptically shaped chambers. Preferably a block is fitted between the adhered together surfaces of the shapes at each lateral edge at the lower ends thereof. These blocks preferably extend laterally outwardly beyond the lateral extremities of the shapes, and the edges of the concave shapes and the blocks are rounded to thereby be nestingly receivable in the interior of the cup.

  • Patent number: 5549834
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for reducing the number of leukocytes in cellular products like platelets collected in an on line or continuous blood separation processes. The systems and methods reduce the number of leukocytes from a cellular suspension before its separation into a cellular-rich concentration. This leads to effective and efficient leukocyte removal and a high quality blood product suited for therapeutic use, with and without long term storage.

  • Patent number: 5549264
Abstract: A support assembly for process control equipment includes a cabinet containing processing equipment. A vertical support pole is supported on said cabinet through a collar for extension and retraction. Process control equipment such as electronic control equipment and a video monitor is mounted on the upper end of the pole. At least one, and preferably two, constant force springs biased into a fully coiled position are attached at one end to the lower end of the pole. The opposite end of the springs are mounted for free rotation on a spool which is secured to the cabinet, whereby raising and lowering of the process control equipment is facilitated.

  • Patent number: 5547453
Abstract: A centrifugation system includes frame has at least one weight bearing member for engaging a support surface generally lying in a horizontal plane. The system also includes a centrifuge assembly including a chamber that can be rotated about an axis. A base supports the centrifuge assembly on the frame within the interior area with the rotational axis oriented in a plane that lies outside a vertical plane perpendicular to the horizontal support surface. The sloped orientation of the rotational axis conserves vertical height. It makes it possible to place the rotating centrifuge components for access in a zone that lies between the knees and the chest of the intended user, when standing.

  • Patent number: 5536238
Abstract: Systems and methods remove a contaminant from a fluid like blood, regardless of whether the contaminant is carried free within the fluid or entrained within cellular matter carried within the fluid. The systems and methods rely upon photodynamic processes to remove free contaminants from the fluid. The systems and methods rely upon separation processes to remove the cellular matter and, with it, the contaminants it entrains from the fluid.

  • Patent number: 5529691
Abstract: Systems and methods for separating a suspension of plasma and platelets from whole blood rotate a chamber about an axis to create within the chamber a low-G zone radially close to the axis and a high-G zone spaced radially further from the axis than the low-G zone. The systems and methods introduce whole blood into an inlet region of the chamber to initiate separation of red blood cells toward the high-G zone of the inlet region. This creates a strong flow of plasma that moves radially toward the low-G zone of the inlet region and elutes platelets into suspension with it. The systems and methods direct the radial flow of plasma and eluted platelets within the inlet region to a port in the inlet region for transport out of the chamber. The systems and methods also drag the interface into this radial plasma flow, eluting even the largest of platelets into suspension for collection.

  • Patent number: 5525218
Abstract: A centrifuge provides simplify access to the processing chamber. In one arrangement, the processing chamber separates into a bowl and spool element to receive a disposable processing bag. In another arrangement, the processing chamber pivots between an operating position and an access position to provide improved access. The centrifuge also employs readily accessible holders for releasably retaining tubing that, in use, conveys fluid to and from the chamber. Though greatly accessible, the centrifuge operates without the need of complicated rotating seals and expensive disposable components.

  • Patent number: 5512187
Abstract: A blood processing method provides a red blood cell product that is free of microorganisms like Yersinia enterocolitica during storage periods over 24 hours. The red blood cell product is collected in a first container, where it is refrigerating to cool the blood product to a temperature of about 3 to 5 degrees C. The refrigerated product is transferred from the first container into a storage container through a prescribed filter medium that comprises a mass of synthetic fibers having an average fiber diameter of about 10 microns or less and a bulk density of about 0.7 gram per cubic centimeter or less. The filtered product is retained in the storage container at a temperature of about 3 to 5 degrees C. for a storage period over 24 hours after filtration. Using the filter medium, microorganisms like Yersinia enterocolitica present in the red blood cell product at the time of collection are depleted.

  • Patent number: 5507525
Abstract: A label for a blood bag comprising a microporous plastic film including a matrix of interconnected pores for allowing gas to flow into and out of the blood bag through a labeled area. The pores allow ink to be absorbed at least on an outer surface of the label allowing the label to be printed and/or written on. The labels of the present invention have breathability with respect to gas that is similar to paper. However, the label is more durable than a paper label in that it can tolerate moisture, abrasion, temperature extremes, dimensional changes, and the like. Accordingly, the labels do not crack or wrinkle as easily as paper labels.
