  • Patent number: 3966638
Abstract: Organometallic compounds of high carbanion yield are prepared by metallation with barium, strontium or calcium or mixture of the same of certain acidic organic compounds having a pKa value of between about 15 and 35 on the MSAD scale in the presence of aprotic polar solvents, e.g., barium reacted with xanthene in 1,2-dimethoxyethane to yield dixanthenyl barium. Such organometallic compounds formed by metal-hydrogen exchange reaction are useful in initiating anionic growth-type polymerization of monomers, e.g., alkylene oxides and vinyl compounds, to form homopolymers and copolymers. The persistence of polymer carbanions created by such catalysts makes possible the controlled preparation of a variety of polymers, including block copolymers.

  • Patent number: 3965289
Abstract: To provide an electronically reproduced image of an original in which defects have been removed by retouching, defects in the original are marked in such a manner that the signals from an analysing scanner corresponding to the defect marking are distinguishable from those corresponding to the remainder of the original and the sensing of the defect-representing signals is used to cause a replacement signal, derived as a function of the densities of picture elements adjacent the defect in the original, to be substituted for the defect-representing signal before the train of signals from the analysing scanner is used to control the treatment of an output surface to form the image.

  • Patent number: 3963999
Abstract: A leaky coaxial cable for use at ultra-high-frequency has, between an outer conductor having slots for the radiation of electromagnetic wave and a protective sheath covering the outer conductor, a dielectric layer with electrically low loss, thereby decreasing the transmission loss. By arranging the slots of the outer conductor in a predetermined relation, it is possible to provide a leaky coaxial cable having a wide band characteristic and less transmission loss.

  • Patent number: 3960464
Abstract: This invention relates to a ventilating fan of the kind comprising a housing defining an air passage, and an impeller rotatable from an electric motor or other prime mover within the housing. The invention is concerned with the provision of an improved automatic shutter device which consists of shutter plates which may have their pivot axes tangential to a common circle and movable between a position which closes the air passage and a position which opens said air passage. The shutter device is operated by means responsive to rotation of the impeller shaft for moving the shutter means to the open position when the impeller is rotating and to the closed position when the impeller is not rotating. The shutter operating means may be such that substantially no thrust or load is placed upon the prime mover when it is rotating at a selected operating speed.

  • Patent number: 3959783
Abstract: An addressing device is described for a control store comprised of a read-only storage portion and a read-write storage portion, each divided in addressable microprogram sectors and both accessible through a common address register and accessing to a common read-out register. Said control store is a part of a multimicroprogrammed unit further comprising a logical unit, a status register for said logical unit and an automatic store address forming organization operating on data supplied from the common read-out register and the logical unit. When a microprogram stored in a sector of the read-write storage portion must be substituted for a microprogram stored in a sector of the read-only storage portion, the logical unit forces into the status register, a pointer code and the sector addresses of the concerned read-only and read-write storage portions.

  • Patent number: 3957342
Abstract: A particular range of glass compositions in the soda-boro-silicate glass system has been found to be particularly suitable for ultra-low loss dielectric optical waveguides. The composition range is indicated in FIG. 1 of the specification. By preparing such glasses in a reducing atmosphere (0-20% CO in CO.sub.2) and adding about 1% As.sub.2 O.sub.3 to the melt attenuation coefficients due to copper and iron can be minimised. The water content of the glass can be reduced by bubbling dry CO in CO.sub.2 through the molten glass. Glasses containing less than 30% Na.sub.2 O by weight have the lowest losses. Using glasses of this type dielectric optical waveguides having an insertion loss of less than 14 dBKm.sup.-.sup.1 have been made.

  • Patent number: 3957343
Abstract: Energy propagating in a dielectric optical waveguide may be transferred from one mode of propagation to another by inducing a spatially undulatory variation in refractive index in the core of the dielectric optical waveguide. Such a variation may be induced by an electro-static field. The electro-static field may be directed either longitudinally of, or transversely of the dielectric optical waveguide. A suitably periodic electro-static field may be generated by positioning a suitable electrode structure about the dielectric optical waveguide. For certain applications it may be desirable to arrange for the spatial period of the electro-static field to vary in a random manner. By arranging for propagating modes to couple to non-propagating modes an optical modulator may be produced.

  • Patent number: 3957419
Abstract: This invention relates to fluidised bed combustion systems and facilitates the maintenance of the depth of the bed. A discharge pipe projects upwardly into the bed so that bed material can flow into its upper end and escape downwardly. The end of the pipe is surrounded by an enclosure and air is discharged into the enclosure so that material will enter the pipe from within the enclosure and have been cooled in the enclosure by the air discharged into it. The walls of the enclosure may themselves be cooled. The invention is illustrated in FIG. 1.
