  • Patent number: 5960856
Abstract: A casting pool (30) of ferrous molten metal is supported on a pair of chilled generally horizontal casting rolls (22) forming a nip (27) between them. The casting rolls (22) rotate mutually opposite directions to produce a solidified metal strip (12) moving downwardly from the nip (27). The strip (12) passes along a transit path (10) which takes it away from the nip (27) in an unrestrained loop (29) disposed within a strip enclosure (38) within which the strip is confined through said transit path (10). The strip (12) moves downwardly from the nip (27) to form the unrestrained loop (29) passes between a pair of cooled non-contact heat absorbers (101) to which heat is radiated from the strip (12) whereby to extract from the strip heat generated by completion of solidification of metal therein after leaving the casting pool (30). Heat absorbers (101) are formed as opposite side walls of a cooling collar (100) defining an upper part of enclosure (38) and provided with cooling water ducts (102).

  • Patent number: 5963032
Abstract: A nondestructive testing equipment comprises a magnetic sensor located within a magnetic shield container. The magnetic sensor includes a SQUID that is a magnetic sensor having a very high sensitivity. A magnetically uniform inspection zone is formed in the magnetic shield container. While a rod-like material to be tested passes through the inspection zone at a uniform velocity, the magnetic sensor can detect an appreciable magnetic field variation that is caused by impurities or minor defects contained in the object to be tested.

  • Patent number: 5962564
Abstract: A method for producing a fast drying high solids adhesive wherein a water based polymer emulsion (latex) is modified with unemulsified elasticizing oils and reinforcing-tackifying resins to produce a stable emulsion of polymer, oil and resin without the use of additional emulsifiers or volatile organic solvents. When packaged in pressurizable canisters along with a suitable propellant, the adhesive may be sprayed through a suitable nozzle and deposited in a thin layer to form an adhesive film which has excellent bonding characteristics for many laminates such as fabric or textiles, wood, plastics, metals and rubber, and for adhering flooring materials such as carpet, linoleum, tiles and artificial grass to a variety of substrates.

  • Patent number: 5954647
Abstract: Repeat fixation for medical procedures is accomplished using a non-invasive locator, specifically a bite plate. The bite plate has at least three fiducial markers on it. The fiducial markers may be LEDs, radiopaque markers for angiography or computerized tomography (CT) imaging or magnetic resonance markers for magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. By detecting the position of the markers, the position of features within the patient (such as a brain tumor or other intracranial target to which radiation is to be applied) can be determined with great precision. Since the bite plate has been molded to uniquely fit to the patient's teeth, it may be removed after an initial imaging of the patient. The bite plate may then be re-attached one or more times to the teeth. An alternate embodiment uses a head ring or head holder such as a head mask system with the LEDs thereon. The head ring is useful for single fraction treatments.

  • Patent number: 5952891
Abstract: A variable frequency ring oscillator is controlled by a control signal and has an odd number of cascaded inverting gates. The inverting gates each have input terminals receiving an input signal. Except for the first of the cascaded inverting gates, each input signal on a gate is the output from the preceding inverting gate. The input terminal of the first of the inverting gates receives the output of the last of the inverting gates. At least one inverting gate is a cell having a gain variable as a function of a control signal. An output signal ext of the circuit is an inversion of an input signal inp and has a hysteresis that is a function of a control signal cont. The term "hysteresis" as used herein signifies, for example, a variable frequency signal remaining substantially in its current state for a certain length of time after which the variable frequency signal changes state with a magnitude that is a function of a control signal, upon change of state of an input signal.

  • Patent number: 5942834
Abstract: An improved thermionic electric converter uses a wire grid cathode to provide a larger surface area for electrons to boil off. Alternately or additionally, the larger electron emission surface area can be achieved by using a curved electron emission surface. A laser provides quantum interference to electrons just before they reach the anode, thereby lowering their energy levels such that they more readily are captured by the anode. The arrangement provides improved conversion efficiency and reduced electron scatter.

  • Patent number: 5931911
Abstract: An information processing device IPD implanted in an information processing resource RES which enables dialog between an administration system MAN and the resource RES, by the agency of a standard protocol such as SNMP and through a network such as TCP/IP. The device PID is constituted on the one hand by a selection and dialog manager DIS including a configuration file CF, and on the other by a set of specific agents A1, A2, . . . , An of the protocol SNMP, the protocol which is also used in the device IPD. The manager DIS receives requests form the system MAN and, after reading the file CF, dispatches them, as a function of the object to which they pertain, to one or more of the agents A1, A2, . . . , An and then receives the responses to the requests sent by the appropriate agents and transmits them to the system MAN.

  • Patent number: 5931354
Abstract: A method for producing a fast drying high solids adhesive and the adhesive composition are described herein whereby a water based polymer emulsion known as latex is modified with unemulsified plasticizing oils and reinforcing-tackifying resins, and a stable final emulsion of polymer, oil and resin is achieved without the use of additional emulsifiers or volatile organic solvents. The method takes advantage of the inherent solubility of the oils and resins in the polymer and of the emulsion-stabilizing effects of the selected resins, and the resultant product has excellent adhesive characteristics such as fast drying, improved water resistance, improved freeze resistance, high bond strength and no volatile organic compounds.

  • Patent number: 5928519
Abstract: A system for separation of fluids and drill cuttings received from a borehole during an under-balanced drilling procedure. The system is designed to cope with significantly varied pressures and flow rates, particularly in relation to gas content of drill fluids returned to the surface during the drilling process in a production zone, and to provide effective separation and to reduce the detrimental effect due to the presence of the drill cuttings in the returned drill fluids. In the present invention there is utilized a first stage, high pressure vessel in which a major portion of the gases ad drill cuttings are separated, and a second stage, horizontal low pressure vessel, preferably of greater volume than the high pressure vessel, in which further separating is achieved, including the separate removal of the drilling liquid to be returned to the drill tube.
